This place is truly a case of «don’t judge a book by its cover». While driving across country, we saw some good reviews online and took a shot. Mel’s was just a little ways off of the beaten path and doesn’t look like much on the outside. In fact, we weren’t sure it was open. But when we opened the door, we found a delightful small town diner with AMAZING food. They were accommodating when we asked for breakfast at almost noon, and the local folk were friendly, welcoming and wonderful. The prices were ridiculously low. If you get there on Thursday, get the fried chicken! If I’m ever in Brayton, IA again, this is the first(and probably) only place I’d go!

You will not be disappointed here, fresh food, great pies and pastries … The locals have their own spot but they make room for the tourists and out-of-towners too. You may run in to the local Red Hatters or a couple of good olé boy farmers who add to the charm of this great little diner.
