No more little horses and donkeys : —( All the nuns passed away and the property is being sold. We will never forget many fun visits to the St. Clare Monestery and the miniature horses!

These miniature horses are hilarious. I mainly wanted to point out that the place was still open, despite the fact that the web site says it is closed. It’s on state highway 105 on the south side 7 miles outside of Brenham, Texas. It was run by some nuns who lived at a monastery in the area, but their cloister dwindled to two and it was recently sold to some different nuns who are going to make it some sort of retreat. However, the guy who has been running the place is still there and you can still see the horses. It costs $ 5. First, the good: The horses are awesome. They are super cute, miniature versions of horses. This pretty much speaks for itself. You can walk up to the horses and pet them, or if you ask the guy he’ll let you go into the pasture with them(after pointing out that you are not supposed to). The photo opportunities are great. Now the bad. This place is in pretty sad shape. We were the only people there other than the two older people running the place. There are really no amenities or activities. Just plan on seeing the horses, taking pictures, and bailing out. Overall, it’s worth stopping by but it is a far cry from what it should be.

So, what to do in Brenham, TX, if you’re visiting? Most folks recommend seeing the creamery and the miniature horse farm. Just prepare to slow down if you visit this quaint little town. I visited here with my wife and boys a few weeks ago. It was a cold and dreary day, but I think we had fun. There is not much to do but to look at the horses, really. It is engaging fun for the family for about 20 – 30 minutes. There is a little video that you can watch in the barn and the little store is neat; the staff, friendly. The horses are beautiful but are somewhat shy, and generally appreciated from a distance. I would come back, but only to show newcomers. Cost: $ 12 for 2 adults, 2 children.

The St. Clare Miniature Horse Ranch in Brenham, Texas is a great place for families. We used to take our son and friends here in the spring for«Playday», scheduled this year for March 29th from 10 — 2. The miniature horses are practicing for their spring show and the public is invited. They are cute, cute, cute. Don’t let the nuns fool you. They are about as tough as any Texas rancher minus the stetson. And they LOVE to talk about their mini horses. Take a picnic and grab some Blue Bell ice cream while you are in the area.
