Steamed whole fish with homemade chili sauce, so GOOD!!! Driving here 7 hours from Pennsylvania just for this. It’s, by far, the best Chinese restaurant around the area!

The only Chinese restaurant in the area where I can get food that is even close to what I could get during my time living in China. I normally get takeout as it’s usually packed(for good reason) but go(early) on a Sunday for an amazing brunch or dinner — it’s worth it! Be sure to checkout the specials or you’ll miss out on some amazing options.

My aunt and uncle and I share a passion for authentic Chinese food. I fondly remember family trips into New York’s Chinatown to shop for groceries that could not be found in suburban and rural New Jersey back in the 1960s and 70s(which always included a stop for dim sum), My uncle studied Chinese cookery and is quite accomplished at it, and has traveled to China to experience the cuisine along with his friends from China, who hosted him. Last week, my aunt and I found Fortune Cookies on Unilocal and decided to rendezvous there for lunch. We were so pleased to find a Chinese(Hunan) restaurant(in a convenient location) with bona fide dishes prepared with an Asian clientele in mind, so we waded in and ordered dishes that we wouldn’t encounter in a typical Americanized Chinese restaurant. We ordered three dishes to share: thinly sliced beef tendon in hot oil(appetizer size), frog’s legs with Chinese herbs and vegetables prepared in a hot pot, and sauteed watercress in a sauce made with fermented bean curd. My favorite of these dishes was the beef tendon, spicy and with a chewy, glutenous texture, accented nicely with fresh coriander. My aunt’s favorite was the frog, which was chopped into small bites(with bones) mixed with green and red peppers, diced water chestnuts, and other vegetables. We both enjoyed the watercress, which balanced out the meal. The frog dish was savory, but not spicy. Nibbling around the small bones(and fragments of bones) encouraged us to take our time and proceed carefully. Otherwise, we enjoyed the flavor and texture of the meat and vegetables. We are definitely planning to meet here again with my uncle in tow. Fortune Cookies also serves dishes that may be more familiar, so you can bring your less adventurous friends. However, with a menu showcasing color photos of such dishes as whole fish with chili sauce, duck casseroles, and hot and spicy pigs ears, there are so many tastes to explore!

We went here for lunch for work. The service was very good. Having a big party, they accommodated everything we asked for in a timely matter, except one of the dishes that one of the guests ordered came out very late. We ordered a bunch of dishes and shared them. I have listed each dish below and gave a brief thought about what I tried. Hot and Spicy Pig Ears — These were interesting. They were served cold, which surprised me. They were not really spicy. Strange texture, but they were okay. Hard to describe the taste. Steamed Whole Fish w Homemade Chili Sauce — This was solid. The sauce wasn’t too spicy, but just right and the fish was very soft and tasty. Sautéed String Beans — Cooked just right and was well seasoned. Sautéed Vegetables — Decent. The sauce that the vegetables were cooked in was plain. Hot & Crispy Chicken — Very disappointed dish. It was just very bland. Fish Filet in Hot Chili Oil — Not bad. The fish was cooked like it should be, but it was still not spicy. The hot chili oil was a delight however Beef on Sizzling Hot Plate — Might have been my favorite dish of the day. The beef was very tender and juicy. The seasoning was tremendous too. Chicken with Broccoli — The chicken and broccoli were cooked well along with the sauce. Steamed Dumplings — These were very small. I believe they were with pork filling. The pork was solid too. Fried Dumplings — These dumplings were huge and overcooked. The pork filling was once again solid. Vegetable Fried Rice — Decent at best. White Rice — Went well with most of the dishes and was cooked just right, which was big as it was used with most of the dishes. Sweet Pork? — I am not sure what this dish was called, but this was what it tasted like. The sauce was very sticky and sweet. Some pieces of pork were inedible though. They were very hard. Will I go back? I might. Authentic Chinese food.

I’ve been to this restaurant at least three times and I’m very satisfied with the food and service. By far, this is the best Hunan style Chinese food I’ve found in NJ. They have a lot to offer and the food is properly done. My favorites are Steamed Whole Fish and sautéed String Beans. So good, aren’t greasy at all.

Decent Hunan food with decent price, especially in Bridgewater area where you would not expect lots of good Chinese restaurants. Try spicy fish/frog/short ribs. They were running out of some of the ingredients which was a little bit disappointing…

Awesome! During this fabulous lobster season, I really want to get some lobster, but I don’t know how to cook it. Even you go to some restaurant, they won’t guarantee the lobster is fresh. Today, I brought my lobster to fortune cookie and they made it for me by only charging for the labor fee! And it’s so yummy! You could never make it like this at home! I strongly recommend here!

I dined here this past weekend to celebrate my boyfriends parents’ birthday. They had come from northern PA while we had come from NYC so it was a reasonable trek for the both of us but the food was pretty darn good! Living in Midtown, we don’t get a lot of authentic Chinese cuisine, so this place was a welcome reprieve from the Americanized Chinese food I’m used to here. We probably ordered 8 – 10 dishes(grandparents were there too so it wasn’t just us 4), and everything came out super quickly and piping hot. Highlights were the Steamed Whole Fish with Chili sauce and the Pork Shoulder Hunan Style. The latter was fall off the bone tender and had just the right amount of fatty skin. They gave us complimentary noodles after hearing that we were there to celebrate a birthday, which I thought was really sweet of them! Menu is very extensive and they have tons of local Hunan delicacies. Service was pretty solid and way better than what you are used to in Chinatown. You can tell that this restaurant gets a lot of regulars since during the entirety of our meal, there were take-out customers popping in at the back. Great spot so definitely would recommend if you are in the area!

Meh… Ok, here it is. No color, no excitement, no flavor. I get that I am in the middle of New Jersey, but I’ve never been to a place so horrible! The smoked pork was dry and overcooked, the meats and vegetables had a brown hue to them, and nothing had good taste. I hate to be so harsh, but this restaurant misrepresents Hunan-style food. I’m giving five stars for service, but unfortunately the food didn’t make the cut.

What a surprise. In the middle of suburbia is this place that feels more like Chinatown than central NJ. The menu is extensive and dishes that are quite exotic and authentic. There are the traditional dishes that you expect but the menu has so many more things to try. As I was short on time, I ordered from the lunch menu and had the Mongolian Chicken. It was a simple dish but delicious and inexpensive. Can’t wait to try it again.

Very authentic cuisine… Which was a little worrisome at first. We were the only English speaking group there! The spice is just right! Whole fish in chili sauce a must try! Salt and pepper shrimp, sautéed pork belly and duck was great! The frog casserole was worth the try, but lots of little bones so beware. Kids devoured the fried rice, dumplings, sesame chicken as well as the shrimp and duck dishes. The sweet pork ribs were good too! Food came out hot from the kitchen! So spicy, so good. Definitely will go back! Service was pretty good for an authentic Asian restaurant– very pleasant staff. Only irony was that we did not get a fortune cookie with the check– funny considering it’s name!

Came here for New Years dinner. Seems like my family’s going to make it a tradition to come here on American holidays. Dishes we ordered the second time around: Spicy Beef Tendon — As delicious as the first time we ordered. Hunan Style Pork Shoulder — The pork shoulder was really tender and had large pieces of delicious fatty skin. Instead of spicy, the sauce was more sweet and sour, which was a first for me. Never had sweet and sour pork shoulder before. Spicy Fish Belly — This dish really confused my family. We expected the dish to be spicy steamed belly of a fish, but it turned out to be this spicy stir-fried dish of something that tasted like conch. I think it was fish maw, but not too sure. It was good either way. Steamed Spareribs with Taro — Taro was delicious because it soaked up all the meat juices. Spareribs was alright. It was really surprising at how many Chinese families were there for New Year’s. I thought ours would be the only one, but the place was packed. The restaurant, though, brings out food at an amazing pace. We barely waited 10 min. before the first dish came out.

Pretty darn good is what I would like to call this place. The food is straight from China. You even get delicacies you wouldn’t expect, like pepper sautéed intestines. Every dish has a unique flavor that surprises your mouth! The layers of flavor makes it each a complex and well thought out dish. There is no dish that tastes like Americanized Chinese food where everything is just sweet and sour. The decorations are sparse and the location is next to a small gas station. Nothing suggests of the gem that is inside the simple storefront. Tastes so good! Every time I come home, we come and get our fill. Heard ownership is changing hands though. Hopefully this doesn’t impact any flavors.
