Just Baked

I was in this little bakery just once and did not have a good experience. It was late afternoon and there weren’t many varieties of cupcakes. The lady ahead of me ended up buying all of them. When the lady at the counter said that was all they had, I was surprised and left.
Just a couple weeks ago, I returned only to find a for sale sign in the window.

The woman in the store was my first impression, which I should have just left right then. I had my 4 year old with me who was exited to get a cupcake. The woman did get up to help, but looked ticked off, didn’t say anything and had a very bothered look on her face. Like we were bothering her. We went around, looked at the cupcakes, picked out what we wanted and she never said a word, still the look. When it came time to pay she spoke! Gabe me my total, $ 15.95 for six cupcakes. Then asked if I wanted my receipt. Then went and sat back down. So home we went to try our cupcakes. My daughter got a funfetti one, simple, she ate two bites and threw it away. I got a red velvet cheesecake and I am not sure where the «cheesecake» comes from? The cake past is tasteless. We got 4 more, different flavors, for the rest of it family but I don’t have much hope for them. We won’t be returning. I think «just baked» means they «just» took it out of the freezer/​packaging and «baked» it. Nothing homemade or special. So many other bakeries with gourmet cupcakes to enjoy.

Most expensive cupcake and one of the worst I have ever tried. In a hurry to grab a Birthday cupcake I ran in Just Baked (first trip). Lady behind the counter was far from friendly. I think all she said is how many cupcakes and $ 5.75. Yes that is right …$ 5.75 for TWO. They barely had a dab of icing on them and it was crooked. I made mention of this but woman acted like she didn’t hear me. I would have left them on the counter but again it was a Birthday today cupcake. Do yourself a favor and buy a cake mix and icing and make 24 cupcakes for a lot less than 2 will cost you. I am sure they will taste better too.
Not sure how they are staying open!!!

My son goes to daycare in Brighton and at one of his parties there were some coupons from other local Brighton businesses. I saw a coupon from just baked for BOGO cupcakes and being a total cupcake obsessive I couldn’t resist! I popped into the shop around 4 pm to grab two cupcakes before picking my son up from daycare that we could eat as dessert that night after dinner. I got a caramel for my husband and a cookies and cream for myself.
When I walked into the shop, there was an older woman manning the register. She wasn’t terribly friendly but she wasn’t NOT friendly either. She was just kind of there. So I got my cupcakes and left, I would have sat and had some coffee or something, but the place was empty and she looked like she’d rather be anywhere but there so I figured that might be awkward.
After dinner we finally got to try our cupcakes. My husband’s didn’t last more than a couple bites so I assume it was good, but if it’s got sugar in it, he pretty much likes it, so his taste is not as discriminating as mine. My cookies and cream cupcake was just OK. The cupcake itself was a yellow cake versus a chocolate cake with the oreo pieces in it… which was interesting, I think I would have preferred chocolate cake. I mean an original oreo has no yellow in it, it’s all chocolate! The only really BAD part of it was though, there seemed to be some kind of slimy film on the icing. Once I bit into it, it was really good and delicious, the butter cream kind that I love, but I couldn’t really get over that little hint of slime around the top. I don’t know if it’s because it was the end of the day and it had been sitting around, but it turned me off pretty good (although, mind you I obviously ate my whole cupcake!).
I would be interested to try it again earlier in the day and see if the freshness of the cupcakes makes a difference. It sure is convenient on my route of usual errands. If I have a better experience I will come back and update my review!
