Mahoney’s Garden Centers

Easy and mid sized parking lot, with snow it was easy to miss the entrance but do keep eye out for their big ENTRANCE sign so you don’t hit the curb or anything.
I am easily intimidated so I didn’t really mind the employees not greeting me or asking me if I needed help. They seemed friendly to the other customers that needed help. This location is in Brightons so there’s that city people thing.
I was here for succulents and cacti so I can only speak to those.
I would say good collection, they have gollum jades for $ 5-​$ 6. Ovata jades. Cacti looked good but I’m not really into cacti. Saw maybe one or two Ming things. Didn’t see anything cool like astrophytums.
Succulents: the lithops were in bad shape, and only one head in each pot. Forgot to check prices.
They had these extra big echeverias and haworthias in fancy pots. Showstopper stuff.
They have smaller succulents like sedum, pachyveria, echeveria, one fuzzy gray kalanchoe. Some pink edged aloes. Aloe veras… I picked a haworthia cymbiformis $ 3.98.
No pests anywhere, no webs no mites.
Nice pots too, they have glazed ones and unglazed normal ones. (They have more variation in sizes for the unglazed normal ones than big box stores or craft stores and I appreciate that when it comes to potting succulents)

I went there today to find 50% off perennials signs on the perennial tables. When I went to pay for the plants, the woman at the register told me the sale does not start until tomorrow. When I asked why they would put signs out today, she told me that it must be a mistake. Well, I guess it was a big mistake to even go there today. I’ll be going elsewhere from now on.

This is my happy place. It is SO amazing and I always end up buying plants even when I say I won’t. The staff is truly incredible and have helped answer so many questions for me. They even re-​planted my withering Zee-​zee for no charge and spent time explaining what to do to salvage him. The prices are also very good, so buy your houseplants and succulents here as opposed to the tiny boutique style stores who will charge you literally double. A nice, healthy snake plant was approx $ 15 here, and $ 45 for the same size at Fern in Boston (ridiculous!)
Anyway– i love it!

I’ve come here a couple times so far in search of succulents, so I’ll comment primarily on that. I have been mostly impressed. The garden center is very large and their succulents seem quite healthy (and the ones I’ve taken home have done very well). They keep a lot of echeveria, sedums, haworthias, and sempervivums outside, as well as some succulents that are more often used for ground cover. In the atrium, you’ll find a number of other succulents, including kalanchoe, lithops, and a variety of cacti.
The first time I visited the selection was much better than the second time. My only complaint would be related to the succulent selection: I wish there were more interesting or unusual varieties of plants. Mahoney’s has some gorgeous, colorful succulent planters on display, but I couldn’t find very many of the plants in those arrangement actually on sale at the store (a missed opportunity). Based on my visits, I wouldn’t hold my breath for any rare finds (you might want to try ordering plants off Etsy if you have something really specific in mind).
The variety of other plants (including vegetables) seemed to be very good, and there’s also a whole room of different pots and trinkets for your garden. I would agree with other reviewers that the staff are sort of hands-​off when it comes to customer service, but that’s honestly the kind of customer service I like (I can’t be alone in feeling relieved when no one tries to «help» me in a store). When I’ve asked questions of the staff, they seemed knowledgeable and friendly enough, and checkout is quick. The prices aren’t too egregious, either.
If you don’t have access to a car, there are several bus lines that make stops almost right outside Mahoney’s.

Big place, lots of options, great selection. Came here to finish up shopping for veggie plants and they had a good variety of stuff. Nice, quick customer service. Price was pretty average (aka. sort of expensive) compared to other places we looked in the area, but it didn’t break the bank.

I had a great experience at Mahoney’s yesterday. Gladstone was incredibly helpful, kind, and patient. Lovely guy. Can’t thank him enough, especially because I had a very cranky 5 year old who wanted to go home. As someone who knows very little about gardening and had a lot of newbie questions, but who needed things done fast, I could not have asked for a more productive trip. And all this took place on a Sunday morning, when the place was quite busy.

I am in love with this place. So glad I ventured out of the city. The orchids are amazing. The staff was extremely helpful. The place is so Zen. The prices were great. For less than the price of one orchid from a downtown florist, I got two gorgeous orchids, two pots, a small succulent, and a small air plant. Love them in my home and office! Will definitely return and highly recommend.

First time to Mahoney’s and it was a great experience. This was the first time I’ve ever had my own garden and really appreciated all the help I received. Most of all, I want to give a big thank you to Alex, who helped us create this gorgeous mini-​garden!

Love their selection of plants and their friendly, helpful staff. I come here 3 – 4 times/​year and have never had a bad experience. Their plants are more expensive compared to what you’ll find at home depot, but they have a much better selection of unique, beautiful plants. I would recommend getting your run of the mill «fillers» and «spillers” — like coleus, sweet potato and vinca vines or dusty millers from home depot, but if you’re wondering where to buy your «thrillers» Mahoney’s is the best. Their staff is also very knowledgeable and always takes time, when asked, to let you know the best way to take care of plants and also offers helpful advice about what looks nice with what.

I’ve driven past Mahoney’s several times in the past but never went in. I came in last week looking for a special plant for my mothers birthday.
When I entered the greenhouse I was amazed on the variety of plants they have and how healthy everything was. I passed many Mahoney’s workers and no one acknowledged me or asked me if I needed any help. I must have passed about 5 workers and no one said anything or even had a smile on their face. I’ve read the many Unilocal reviews about this kind of service so that is what I came in expecting.
Parking at Mahoney’s is great, there is a large parking lot that is easy easy to get in and out of during non-​rush hour times. There is also street parking if the parking lot is full.
Prices are on the higher side but it really does reflect the quality of the plants you will buy there. For example a very small bonsai set up in a pot was about $ 49.99. They really do have an amazing variety of air plants in the store as well as holders for them; hanging or bowls. I would return for the plants just not the customer service at Mahoney’s.

I could spend hours at Mahoney’s. They have a huge selection of flowers, herbs, and trees/​bushes. Everything I bought was in excellent condition (much better then Home Depot), and the staff was helpful. I’ll be back this Spring!

A real great place to buy a plant! The staff is great and knowledgeable, you can tell when asking them any questions that they really care about all things regarding horticulture.
I walked away with a nice Bonsai tree, the guy in the gardening center was nice and helpful. I only took away one star, because of the prices on the accessories. If you need stones get them from a dollar store, or shears get them from a hardware store.
Great people, I would definitely by a plant there again.

I’ve always loved Mahoneys and had great experiences at their other shops, but the one in Brighton was just awful. The staff was unfriendly, and instead of helping me find cat-​safe house plants, they gave me a sheet of paper with the names of some plants, which left me stooping and reading plant labels for the next 45 minutes. Two of the three plants I did buy were planted in very little soil and had to be replanted when I got them home (when I watered them, the water immediately flowed out of the bottom of the pot). I’ll never go here again and would recommend one of the many other garden shops in the area instead of Mahoneys.

Mahoney’s in Brighton tends to have a solid selection of airplants, potting materials, tropicals, ground cover plants, trees, etc. I shop here regularly for plants to grow in terrariums, and they often have a number of options. The only problem is, it’s hit-​or-​miss. Catch them after a recent shipment, and they’re flush with plants in every shape, color and size. Alternately, catch them before a shipment and it’s like the Sahara in the shop, sparse, with limp, dried-​out plants.
Pricing is pretty variable, from pretty reasonable to outrageous; the mini tropicals are very reasonable at $ 2.50-$ 4/​each, as are some of the mini succulents, but the airplants and potting supplies (moss, glass vessels, etc.) are ridiculous ($ 17 for an airplant that will almost certainly die on me in a month? No way). The staff is helpful, in the past I’d call ahead to find out when they’d be getting a shipment of plants in and plan my shopping trips around that. I’ve luckily never attempted to landscape a full-​sized garden with plants from Mahoney’s, as I think it’d bankrupt me, but I’ll continue to be a small-​scale customer!

Went to the Wayland store at 2 on a Friday. Very good plant selection but felt that staff were indifferent. Several folks in blue shirts mulling around but none offered assistance or guidance. Spent $ 150 on perennials but left feeling it’s not a nice place to work. Later that day I picked up a wheelbarrow at a box store and got better service. At Mahoney’s I was too long waiting for cashier to finish talking with colleague who was busy texting. Left scratching my head. Will only go back, if at all, because of plant selection.

For someone who is fairly clueless about anything to do with the garden, the staff here is incredibly helpful. Last year we did a major patio renovation with bamboo and container gardens. The staff walked me through different bamboo varieties and growing tips. Ditto for helping me select plants for containers in the shade and the right type of soil. Hopeless and black-​thumbed though I may be, everything thrived and not a single death was reported.
If you need a lot of help it’s much better to come during a quiet time, like weekday midday. But even on the Saturday of Memorial Day, somewhat a moment of peak frenzy, I was able to find assistance and ask questions.
Now it’s a year later and I’m back to replant my containers and experiment a little.
About Selection: Of course you’re going to find a much bigger selection here than elsewhere. They also have a huge selection of pots, accessories and all other things garden (mulch, dirt, etc.) We also found a fountain here (and it was a little dinged up so we were given a generous discount and were able to but the dings facing away)
About Prices: Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than Home Depot, etc., but generally the plants will be healthier. Our fountain cost about the same as we found online prices. Pots overall are expensive, but you can’t beet the variety. If you’re not looking for anything really specific I would otherwise recommend Ocean State Job Lot for these.
Warning — during peak times it can be mayhem and the parking lot a challenge.

Man, something happened here. I came to Mahoney’s a year ago — multiple times — and everyone was great. Warm, helpful, excited about plants. I went today with my girlfriend, and the staff on hand couldn’t care less about what we needed.
1.) I asked 3 staff members for help, and all of them just shrugged their shoulders. «Can I get someone to help us transplant these?» Shrug. «Where can I transplant these myself?» Shrug. Thanks.
2.) Mahoney’s now charges a transplant fee. Maybe that policy has always been around, but they’ve never charged me before. I spend good money in your store, the least you can do is help me pot my new plants.
3.) The cashier didn’t say a word to me, barely even looked at me. You work at a beautiful garden center on a sunny day! Cheer up, lady.
I’ll give this place an extra star for its selection — not everyone needs help from staff. But if you’re looking to browse and ask a few questions about plants, maybe learn a thing or two, there are other, better garden centers around Boston.
A note to staff: Look up the definition of «customer service.» Or ask your parents about it.

Friendliest staff ever! I have no idea what’s going on in here but these folks are so nice and helpful. I love that they have full parking, too!

I’m a Jew, so getting a real-​life Christmas tree is a very new thing for me; however, it doesn’t take a tree-​hugger to know that Mahoney’s makes the experience a great one!
First, the staff is extremely friendly, even if the place is packed (like it was on the Sunday afternoon we went). They have the trees organized very well — small ones in one area, medium in another and huge, pretty $ 80+ ones in a section far from the others. We found a nice little apartment-​sized tree for under $ 30 (and there were nice ones for under $ 20, too!) and it was quick and easy to find a helpy helper to give us a hand.
They put it in the tree-​shaker and gave it a little trim before wrapping it and bringing it to our car. While we waited for him to wrap up our tree, we wandered around the actual store — it was full of Christmassy stuff but also plenty of flowers, plants, bird-​feeders, and garden equipment. Just like the outside, it was very organized inside. We didn’t buy anything, but I know once spring comes around, I’ll be there for my gardening needs.
It was a great experience and I know this will be my go-​to spot for all things foliage!

Now that it doesn’t suck so bad outside again, people are flocking in droves to Mahoney’s. I know this because I waited approximately 15 minutes to talk to the owner about the feasibility of growing fig trees indoors (verdict: not gonna bother). But I spent that waiting time browsing the awesome selection of houseplants, trying not to buy everything that thought looked good. (I managed to walk out with only a jade plant and gardening gloves.)
This place could stand to be bigger physically, because it’s hard to navigate around (especially when it’s crowded), but it manages to pack a LOT of stock inside. You can get pretty much any kind of planter you’ve ever dreamed of, including stuff hand painted in Morocco, every type of potting soil ever invented, and a lot of beautiful houseplants, flowers, fruit trees and herbs.
