Well my wife took me here because the place was known to be good. I just wanted a fresh pastry but instead I got a dry and stale cinnamon roll. Not satisfied. Maybe next time I will have better luck. Or maybe I will just go somewhere else.

My dad and I headed here after the 6 train decided that it would be delayed and there was a massive amount of people waiting on the platform. We wanted to miss the pile up. This little bakery is a gem. Perfect for a breakfast that reminds us of childhood. We had ham and egg sandwiches. The bread was pan de manteca and is made fresh at the bakery. It was soft and flakey on the inside, you could see the layers even after its ironed/grilled down. You know it’s typical when they ask you if you want butter or mayonnaise added before they give it to you. I said no, but it’s nice to see this. My dad said he remembers in his childhood when they would pull out the ironing board at home, and put brown paper bags between the sandwich and the iron. This is how they would make these sandwiches for themselves. I also noticed details such as sazón Goya and adobo behind the counter, and Malta and chocolate milk in the beverage fridges. This gave me more of the feel, since I’ve grown up with these staples. Also, they make flan and bread pudding here! I haven’t tried them out yet, but I will next time. This place is small, but they have two small tables with two chairs each at least. It was a pleasant find, and got my day onto the right track again. Try it out if you are in the area!

$ 2.50 for a large spanish coffee? Seems like way too much for castle hill, Bronx but I thought it might be worth it if the coffee was great, but nope! Not even good coffee, but the flan was yummy, not too mushy, perfectly firm and worth the $ 2.50 for sure.

I use to live in this neighborhood and would always walk to the train station further away just so I could get my Spanish coffee here in the mornings. Yes the opposite closer station has Starbucks but at a third of the price I get a much better cup of coffee. If I was feeling particularly hungry I would pick up the delicious avena(Spanish oatmeal) or hot fresh lard bread with butter. I was in The BX the other night and needed a cup of their delicious coffee AND I am happy to report, the place is still there and the coffee is still yummy. PS. I also had a freshly delicious guava pastry. This is an old school Spanish bakery. Sadly, harder and harder to find in NYC.
