La Fortuna is the bee’s knees of Dominican food. The people are friendly and the drinks are stiff. Honestly, $ 3 for an enormous helping of rice and beans can’t be beat in this city. Also, it’s a great place to brush up on your Spanish and catch up on your favorite daytime telenovela. Would I take a date here? No. Would I take my lunch break here? Absolutely.

La Fortuna, you have a special place in my heart. The school at which I teach is about 1 block away from it, and our lunch options are 1) cafeteria food, which always looks old, 2) McDonald’s, which might give me a heart attack, 3) the deli down the street, which often smells like cat, and 4) La Fortuna. Sometimes, I am so grateful for La Fortuna. Rice and beans for $ 3. I can add on a delicious stew for only an extra $ 2. I love it! The interior of this place is supposed to resemble a forest that glows in the dark. It’s interesting… Honestly, I don’t hang out in the neighborhood after work, but something tells me that La Fortuna becomes a crazy after-hours club when I’m asleep at home. You get minus a star, because sometimes you put codfish in your rice, and that’s kind of gross.
