What is the definition of democracy? The role of the social welfare net? The inalienable right to free expression? The value of tax dollars? The state of public housing programs? The budget priority list for public institutions? The importance of acceptable air quality? The above questions are: a) topics which can be found in the nonfiction volumes held in this library b) dilemmas considered in Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia c) the beginning of an advertising pitch for mixed-use waterfront development as seen on last week’s Mad Men d) questions I grapple with every time I walk into this library, because it is filled with«patrons lacking permanent residences.» But hey, at least they’re reading!
