Inner Space – Yoga In the Village

We rented Inner Space for my child’s first birthday. It was perfect! We rented the smaller of the two rooms and it was still very large. It was the perfect blank canvas that let me get really creative with the decorations. Elie was a joy to work with… easy going and extremely responsive. She allowed us to bring our own food and hired a cleaner for us so we had one less thing to think about. The rental price is a great deal. A lot of our friends said that the place was perfect for a birthday party.

This is probably the best yoga studio I have ever used. They are age-​friendly, individually attentive, and able to help one adapt poses according to one’s ability. They are supportive, caring, and their instructors are very well trained. I would highly recommend this yoga studio without any reservations

I have tried the Mon, Tues, Weds and Thurs evening classes and each has been excellent! The teachers (unlike Y teachers) know yoga and carefully explain how to get into poses. I’ve been doing yoga on and off for 20 years and this is the first time I’ve gotten into using props. This place is a good deal, too: 10 classes for $ 130.

I tried this studio once and was not impressed. The studio felt chilly to me – but that’s probably just because I typically do hot yoga. The class wasn’t very challenging, and I found it kind of boring. I agree that the class offerings are fairly limited, but after the first class I took, I really didn’t have much interest in coming back here anyway. I definitely prefer the Baptiste studios, or All One Yoga, if you’re not into the hot yoga thing.

Inner Space is my second home. I look forward to visiting three times a week, and with a new job, will be there even more.
The space itself is serene and perfect for yoga, which is what I practice, but they also offer pilates, karate, tai chi, and capoeira. They offer a great variety of yoga styles (Kripalu, Vinyasa, Iyengar, and Restorative), so you can try them on for size. The yoga instructors are all superb. This is not gym yoga. There is a real sense of community here.

I love the space. There are huge skylights in the ceiling of the yoga room so that you can look up at either the sky or the red brick of the building next door. The temperature is comfortable. They have props and blankets. The yoga instructor (Larissa) was really nice and easy to listen to/​follow. The only problem for me was that the class was too crowded for her to give much personal attention or make adjustments. I decided afterwards that I need to find a smaller class better for beginners but overall I really liked the studio and I’m sure I’ll be back to try other classes here. It’s right on the D Line station and on the 65 bus route. The name on the front of the building is «Inner Space» but their brochures say Yoga in the Village so maybe they just changed the name. The people in the class were really friendly and all different ages. They also offer NIA, pilates, Karate, Capoeira, Tai chi, and a yoga class for kids and they rent the space out for birthday parties etc.

I was initially turned off by the limited class schedule which seemed to cater more to stay-​at-​home moms than working professionals, but decided to give inner space a shot after deciding that Baptiste power yoga wasn’t really my thing (too much sweat, too little relaxation for my taste).
The Monday night class with Sherri is now my favorite way to start the week. The class is as challenging or relaxing as you want to make it and her instruction is great. Each class is pretty much the same sequence of poses, but fluctuates based on the energy level of the group. I look forward to this class as an hour and a half escape from the craziness of life. The music and strings of lights help, as do the delicious kookoo café seconds that are sometimes waiting in the lobby after class.
Whether you are a novice or seasoned yogi, Yoga in the Village is worth a shot if you can find a class to fit your schedule! It’s not going to break the bank, and if you decide you like it enough to come back they have a 10 class card that saves you about $ 2 per class. Maybe I’ll see you next Monday :)
