Ad Hoc Art, which was Antimart before they were Ad Hoc Art, had a lot of cool shows in its various incarnations and also at some point dabbled in doing screenprinting and offering studio space to artists. Art shows, live music, the occasional movie screening. Definitely more interesting than anything I ever saw going on at the Williamsburg galleries or any of the other Morgantown warehouse dweller dreck. Are they still operating?

I usually pop into Ad Hoc about once a week, and I haven’t missed an exhibit since I moved in down the street. I saw the infamous traveling graffiti showcase Going Postal a couple weeks back, where the collector Martha Cooper had her book launch. She had some legit work of some old-school graffiti pioneers like Stain, Creeper, and Faust. She made it a sticker swap too, so you could actually pick up some pieces to throw up in your hood. I’ve also been to shows by some of my favorite modern day graffiti artists such as Know Hope, C215, ElbowToe, Swoon, and Imminent Disaster. Last summer, I saw an amazing show called 5 Identities, 5 Destinations, which featured five very different and talented artists. I wish I could’ve afforded any piece in there. There’s never a bad show at this place. My favorite gallery in the city.

Hey! I have to step in and disagree with the last reviewer. The neighborhood isn’t Greenwich Village, but it’s not a death trap. And unlike Greenwich Village, we actually have a sense of community and don’t have to pass people with outrageous senses of entitlement carrying their $ 7 lattes and sweater-clad dogs around– or doing bumps of coke off the keys to their 9k a month studio apartments that are smaller than my bathroom. Oh, and most neighborhoods don’t have places like this cute little art gallery that sells really interesting pieces by local artists– in one of the very few New York neighborhoods that still caters to real artists. The place is cool without being pretentious and the openings are always packed with interesting people.

Really cool little gallery in a super-hip(if slightly sketchy) area of Brooklyn. A friend of ours had an opening here and it was a blast. The staff are really sweet and the DJ’s did a great job of keeping warm bodies inside. Buying a piece was a totally painless process, which I appreciated, and the prices were very fair. Overall, Ad Hoc is an awesome place with a friendly, supportive vibe and amazingly great customer service. This oddly cool little community is lucky to have Ad Hoc in its midst. P. S. Manhattanites, don’t be scared to come here! Take the L train to the Morgan Avenue stop and it’s like, right outside the door.
