I live down the street from B & D Liquor Store, but I only recently turned 21(well, actually … 22 now, I guess) in NYC, so I’ve never stepped foot inside. The awning makes this liquor store look unapproachably cheap, but I took a chance when I desperately needed some dark ale for braising chicken. As soon as I opened the door, I heard the owner say«Sorry, I have a customer,» and hang up the phone. So attentive! He politely looked towards me in the non-sleaziest way possible, and I quickly explained my dilemma. He apologized courteously about the lack of beers in the store; they only sell liquors, wines, and spirits. Right — that’s what it says outside. I really appreciated that he was not snarky about it at all. He concernedly suggested the Rite-Aid down the street, or another grocery store, and I was moved by his genuine desire to help me find the missing ingredient. I was pretty desperate, however, so I asked if he recommended any wines for braising chicken. He walked me to the white wine section, and pointed out two dry white wines. When I asked if there were smaller sizes(since it’d be a one-time use), he exclaimed«Oh, of course!» and he showed me the perfect thing — a lovely, 200mL bottle of Chardonnay. I cannot impress upon you how INCREDIBLY helpful and wonderful he was. After all his help, I felt really bad that I was only spending $ 2, and I made awkward reassurances that I’d be back, now that I’m legally able to buy alcohol. 5 stars for service, for sure. It’s a small store, but everything inside is arranged tastefully and organized well. I guess the selection isn’t as extensive as an oenophile would like(obviously I’m not one), but I think this small liquor & wine store would suit all of my purposes — wines and liquors for baking, cooking, and drinking at classy dinner parties. I don’t like being overwhelmed my selection anyway, so there! It’s perfect for me. :D
