Bikram Yoga South Slope

I love this place. The staff and patrons have always been sweethearts. The new location in Lefferts is also beautiful with plenty of room in the dressing/​shower areas.

Very friendly, comfortable Bikram studio. I love attending there. Great teachers, big comfortable space and changing rooms.

I am currently a member at another studio & have learned to appreciate the Lefferts location a lot. I love to attend class at night because the studio offers a room that is lit with dim lighting. It is very comfortable & gives a sense of calmness. The most important factor for me is that the classes are never humid. The current Bikram studio that I attend has classes so humid & hot, that I can never do all of the poses & constantly feel faint & light headed. They have carpet in the room that has a strong smell & someone else’s hair strands are constantly sticking to me. Some of the instructors keep you in the positions for way too long & it can become obnoxious. The showers are stuffy and there are a lot of hair strands on the carpets, cubicles & stalls. It is disgusting & uncomfortable. I say all of this to say that at Bikram Yoga Park Slope, in the Lefferts location, it is very opposite. I am very comfortable with using their showers & every room that they offer is spacious, clean, & hair free. Last Tuesday was my first night being back in a year & I was able to do every position without the urge to pass out from humidity.
The only deterring factor is the price. At my current location, I am paying $ 109 a month. This locations asks for $ 140 and that is a big difference at the end of the year. I would love to become a member to work out there frequently (especially since it’s much closer to home), but the price is out of my budget. It saddens me a bit but I would much prefer pay $ 109 as opposed to $ 140 to do the same exact positions else where.

This studio is a gem hidden in the liveliness of Brooklyn. The studio is a nice size and the staff are very welcoming and awesome. The instructors are very good with newcomers while suiting the advanced practitioners in the room as well. Locker room and multiple showers are clean and good. Very clean facilities. The community of those who practice beside you is very awesome as well. Super supportive community.

I love this studio the owners, teachers & the atmosphere is so healing I have been practicing bikram yoga for 10yrs and I am forever grateful to have found this practice & this studio.

I loved my time at BYPS (and would still attend class their if I lived in Brooklyn). The instructors are knowledgeable and inclusive. Multiple classes throughout the day made it easy for me to get a class in when I could. The space has such gorgeous morning light that I forgot there was carpet until I was reading through some other reviews.
There’s another review with one star because the reviewer felt like she was treated badly by the manager because she couldn’t use a groupon intended for new clients as an existing client and the manager recommended alternatives if classes caused financial strain. This is the only bikram place I’ve ever been that offered work study and I think it speaks to the dedication of the establishment that they offer it. I had nothing but 100% positive interactions with management and front desk staff.

Started with the 30 day groupon and quickly got addicted. Was doing regular yoga with some success, but bikram is the answer for me to keep my back loose and (mostly) free of pain.
The studio itself is great. Plenty of room, I don’t smell the bad smells other people complain about, and the instructors are great.
The per class price may be expensive, but I ended up signing up for the annual. This way the more I go the cheaper each class is. I know its a big bill to begin with, but bikram is my gym. Besides my various sports teams, bikram IS my exercise routine now.
Also, for newbies, coconut water is way better then regular water (for me at least) to get your energy back during and then after class. Seriously, the first time I had it I felt like Popeye eating spinach. I went from feeling light-​headed to normal again in 1 – 2 minutes.
Definitely recommend this studio. Try the 30 day groupon to see if it’s for you.

Huge (compared to other Bikram studios) locker room and many showers.

Super spacious!!! It’s not crammed like a lot of bikram studies and everyone is very nice!!! They have lots of classes and times to choose from and there’s 4 showers if you need to shower after (I don’t know about the Mens room).
Amanda is my favorite and she sings at the end and it’s really soothing! «It’s like a mixture of fernie and Jesus». I haven’t been to one of her classes in a long time but I’m planning on going back soon!

Perfect if you would like to do yoga in a dirty hamster’s cage.
As soon as you walk into the yoga studio, your nose is pierced with this rabbit cage smell because the studio is carpeted. It looks like it has not been vacuumed in months. You can see where other mats have soaked and stained the carpet, gross!
The room never got very hot at all, I barely sweat. At one point I was cold. Cold! I am always soaked after hot yoga classes I have attended at other studios. The instructor showed a pose only once during the whole class. The rest of the time she was just sitting there shouting corrections in an annoyed voice at people by name. There is a rule at the hampster’s den yoga studio that you are not allowed to drink water until 25min into the class — otherwise the teacher not doing any yoga will yell at you. I stupidly bought a 2 week pass thinking it would be fantastic because of the good Unilocal reviews. After the class I kindly asked for a reimbursement and that I only be charged for one class– the instructor slash front desk woman was unable to reimburse my card but gave me the owners email that I should contact:
. I emailed and it bounced back. Interesting. Whatever. I hope they use the extra money to hire a maid to clean their facilities. This place is a staph infection waiting to happen.

Bikram Yoga is one of the most expensive form of yoga class you can take. Thank god for Groupons! In any case, I purchased their 3 months deal. Have been practicing at this site for two months now. I really, really like this place. The studio is located on the corner of 5^th ave and 15^th street in Bklyn, on the 2^nd floor. Classes during the day time are great because the room fills up with TONS of natural light. In the evening, the studio uses mostly a warm yellow light so when you lie on your back, there’s no harsh florescent glare blinding you, which is a lot easier on your eyes.
The yoga room itself is HUGE … I can easily fit 30+ people comfortable. The floor is carpeted but I don’t notice any terrible smell… but then again, I came from a studio that stank horridly, so this is totally an upgrade. The clientele here is a more well mannered group of people, which I much appreciate. From what I see, there is no area for mat storage. You either bring your own, or you can rent one for $ 2. Towel rental is $ 1, and I think there’s unlimited filtered water for $ 1 if you bring an empty water bottle. I just bring my own water… I once made the mistake of trying to fill my bottle in their sink and the sink is too freaking small to fit my bottle! And no, I am not paying to buy water when it’s free. Coconut water is $ 2-​$ 3 depending on what size you get.
Best thing about this place is that the ladies changing room is really spacious, and fitted with FOUR showers! They have a large roster of teachers, so you don’t see the same 5 – 6 faces all the time. I like that. Because the Bikram Yoga practice never deviates from its dialogue or set of poses, having many different teachers spruces things up a bit. Plus, they are all really nice. There are some teachers who teach the class boot-​camp style, but I haven’t encounter any of those nuts here. I enjoy taking class at this studio, and I would certainly recommend it to others.

I used to be addicted to spending money on multiple memberships. After trying every other yoga studio in town to the point of it being unhealthy I finally did one of South Slope’s seasonal 3 month specials. Big commitment. Then I thought I’d return to my old philandering ways and find something ‘better’, but after 2 months was back for the yearly special. When that was up, again I flirted with some aerial yoga, the ymca, the place across the street which were all just fine… but lo and behold I started doing Work Study exchange at South Slope (no I don’t work there and there’s no incentive for me to write this and I don’t necessarily want it more crowded) but after years of comparing and contrasting studio’s, and after 250+ classes at South Slope I can say it just keeps getting better. They offer a variety of teachers for all tastes and styles. I’m so deeply grateful for the community and solid practice I’ve been able to develop at South Slope. They are also offering an intermediate class now (!!) which is way more fun and less intimidating than it sounds, something so good I do not miss unless absolutely necessary. Not that I want that to be over crowded either, but truth be truth.

first of all, I would like to start with complimenting the instructors. I bought the 2 week pass and loved each class i attended. the teachers are very attentive to newbies and very very sweet. I never felt out of place in this new practice even as i struggled through the various poses. they get 5 stars!
but as for the owner– i emailed her asking when the next set of deals would roll out. she said in about a month. That day I also found a groupon deal so i emailed again asking if i could purchase that since I’ve only purchased the trial in the past. to this she replied, «Thank you for asking. I’m sorry the groupon strictly only applies to students that have never attended our studio. If you are currently dealing with financial difficulties we can possible look to offering the special to you at this time. We also have a Workstudy exchange program. Recognizing the wonders of this practice we do look to do our best to include everyone.»
pretty condescending, no? i never mentioned my financial status. maybe i just don’t want to pay 140 $/​month if i could score a deal. duh! pretty crappy business manners (not to mention poor people skills) if you ask me. In any event, i bit the bait of the «possible offer» and «work-​study program» but got no reply back at all. I find it to be bad judgement on her part to respond in such a way since people rely on social media to research everything (including the next hot yoga studio to attend) and since i avidly jumped on my computer just to write this review and let my fellow yogis know exactly how this woman runs her business.
She, just like the carpet in the studio, stinks.

Been in Brooklyn for a little over a week and taken four classes at the 5^th St Bikram Yoga studio. Each of the four classes was taught by a different teacher and each teacher was excellent and added her own flare to the class. Not to mention, each teacher went out of her way to learn my name and give me individual instruction — wow! Good vibes all around at this gem of a studio. The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is the room needs a little freshening up. Not really smelly – they keep the overall studio quite clean, but the grungy carpet really should be replaced. Thank you Bikram South Slope for some excellent classes during my visit to Brooklyn. Leaving a better practitioner then when I arrived thanks to your superb teachers.

CONS:
— Carpeted floor. I really don’t understand why the floor is carpeted. It retains a smell, while not terribly horrible, but lingers nonetheless. After a few minutes in the room, you adjust, but still. carpet in a Bikram yoga studio?
— $ 1 for water from a fountain (with unlimited refills). My old studio sells bottled water for $ 1 and has ample free water available. Not having a free water option for hot yoga leaves something to be desired.
— Expensive. At $ 20/​class this is one of the more expensive studios that I’ve been to. If the caliber of the studio and instructor is stellar then I think it’s worth the price but the carpeted floors and charge for fountain water kind of detract from the experience.
— They only offer two evening sessions: 5:30pm and 7:30pm. I wish there were something in between the 12pm and 5:30pm (like a 2pm or a 4pm class) for those of us out of work a bit earlier in the day.
PROS:
— the studio is quite large with ample space for people to spread out without feeling squished and on top of each other.
— there are lots of windows letting in natural light and a cool breeze in the middle of the class (when they are purposefully opened)
— Amanda (the instructor on Wed night) was INCREDIBLE. I am a big believer that the instructor will make or break a yoga class (especially hot yoga) and right as I thought I was about to die in my pool of sweat (and tears?) she said something about smiling for my body and kept the message uplifting and positive and I literally felt the surge of positivity through my body. Amanda is an excellent instructor because she provides feedback, modification and very clear instruction all while maintaining a very positive, can-​do attitude. As far as Bikram yoga instructors go, she is probably one of the best (if not thee best) I have ever experienced. highly impressed with Amanda.
— location is really convenient. the R train at Prospect or the F at 9^th street will leave you within a 5 minute walk of the studio. the space is light, open and airy and kept pretty clean (minus the smell which is purely due to the carpet, but that’s a con and I digress…)
If the pricing were more affordable and they removed the carpet to add hardwood flooring this could easily be a 5 star Bikram studio in Brooklyn.
Bottom line: A decent studio to practice Bikram in South Slope. Technically this review is 3.5 starts but Unilocal does not allow half points so I gave it ³⁄₅.

The smell ladies and gentlemen is very real. It so real that your mat will start to smell like dirty feet. After my 30 day hot yoga challenge, I started to become paranoid that I was sweating dirty feet smell odors!
Despite the strange odor, I would recommend trying the studio out at least once. The instructors are great. I especially liked the Asian woman who taught at 7:30. She would offer tips and let us know if we were doing a posture incorrectly. Go for it! You have nothing to lose!

Since I’m now a Brooklyner (or is it Brooklynite?), I feel compelled to fully immerse myself in everything très Brooklyn. Kidding, I’m somewhat of a workout addict always looking for a good fitness high. I’ve been to both Bikram Yoga Park Slope locations and enjoyed my visits (side note: the website is now
). I personally like the South Slope location (on 5^th Ave) better.
Why hot yoga? Because lounging around half naked in 105-​degree room for 1.5 hours is fun! Just kidding, I think the heat makes for a very nice distraction that helps me forget how much I suck at yoga. As a yoga newbie, you won’t be able to get full benefits out of every pose right away and it can get very frustrating. Coping with extreme heat while trying to learn the 29 bikram poses is oddly comforting. I’m still waiting for the day when the whole breathing exercise thing just clicks with me.
The pros of this studio:
— A nice studio with a streamlined layout (the industrial engineer in me rejoices), spacious common and locker area, and a nice flow.
— Great bikram yoga experience. The instructors don’t take themselves too seriously, are friendly, give helpful tips, and will correct you without embarrassing you too much in front of everyone.
— Convenient sign-​up process. No need to book ahead of time, just show up and check in. The classes never seem to get too crowded.
The cons:
— CARPETED FLOOR (at both studios). Why? Clearly people are going to sweat into the damn carpet and it’s going to reek. They seem to be doing a good job of keeping the studio clean, but it still smells. The bottom of my mat always smells funky after class, so I always need to wipe it down with Clorox disinfectant. I wish they had a mat cleaning station.
— Expensive for Brooklyn, same rate as Manhattan.
If you’re new to hot yoga:
— Bring water. This is one of the few workouts you won’t survive without water.
— Take your time and don’t push yourself too far; this ain’t no CrossFit.
— Don’t make sudden movements. I find that getting up from savasanna too abruptly is a sure way to get dizzy and nauseous. And puking in the middle of class is so not Brooklyn.

I did the 30 day challenge when I joined with my son — we both took classes almost every day for a month.
So here’s the real scoop —
I have a sensitive nose– It did not smell «Bad» to me
It’s a large very HOT yoga venue full of people sweating intentionally –
and it STILL did not smell bad
The teacher styles vary greatly — some were more «Yoga Mellow» and some were like Marine Corp drill instructors
After a fierce class of moving harder, faster, deeper — you are instructed to relax completely harder faster deeper…
The reality of Bikram Yoga is this — It’s a particular style — If you want to loose weight fast, build muscle quickly and work your BUTT off in a burning hot room — with someone instructing you to GO FOR IT (like a fierce cheerleader) this may be the place for you.
I have been to another Bikram place — so in comparison — This place is HOTTER, LARGER, and the instructors are way TOUGHER. (Hey, Some people pay big bucks for a woman in leather to beat them up – to each his own)
I prefer a more holistic style of Yoga that includes sun salutations and meditation, So I followed this 30 day stint with a year at Bodhisattva Yoga in Park Slope — they get my 5 star vote. See my review on their site :-)

and went almost every day happily :-)
