Walked into here randomly when I got off at a different subway station than I usually do. What a discovery! Nice little market with things that other stores in the area don’t offer.(Not even the larger Associated down the street has some of the things they have here.) I’d expect to find products like these in a Trader Joe’s, not in a small market on Nostrand in Crown Heights. Sure, it’s a little more expensive than some of the other stores in the area, but the product selection is much nicer. I will definitely be coming back!

OK, so recently CJ remodeled themselves as a Manhattan-style Korean deli with all the luxuries everyone reading this who doesn’t live in Crown Heights expects at a fruit market — good beer, Garden of Eatin’ chips, hummus, stuff for cheese-and-crackers, Brent and Sam’s cookies, etc. CJ has brought all that to Crown Heights(24 hours a day? Nearly that? I don’t think I’ve ever seen them closed but I don’t really come home super super late that much) and it is awesome. I don’t even think they still carry the salt cod and pickled pig parts that are more typical of a Crown Heights fruit market and which are not that appealing to the type of customer who buys the fancy beer and cheese. But in the interests of providing useful information, the Met Food on the corner of St. John’s is a perfectly nice supermarket that has also increased it’s offerings of upscale products as the ‘hood has changed. And it is cheaper than the deli.

I completely agree with Melanie that this is the best food market in the«Nostrand Avenue South section of Crown Heights.» They have a really, really great variety of produce, most of which is super cheap. Bunch of asparagus? $ 1. Package of snow peas? $ 1. Bunch of herbs? $ 0.50 to $ 1. Whole small pineapple? $ 1(sometimes, not always). Seriously. Really cheap produce. But always check it carefully. The peppers can be hit or miss and often entire packages of strawberries or raspberries with be bruised and/or moldy. But sometimes strawberries are only $ 1 and really amazing looking, so stop often and check. They also have a really great selection of cheeses and packaged lunch meats. Granted, the cheese are more expensive than big grocery markets like Trader Joe’s, but it’s nice to know that I can get goat cheese and gouda just up the street. Canned and dried goods can be way over priced, so we tend to not buy those here, but they do have a really great selection of specialty items — even tahini! Plus, the people who work here are SO nice. Really a great neighborhood spot. 5 stars for the selection, 4 stars for the produce quality and prices, 3 stars for the pantry item prices.

This is the best food market in the Nostrand Avenue South section of Crown Heights. CJ’s is better than Associated, the supermarket four blocks down. In fact, we’ve opted to do our grocery shopping here rather than Associated in the past because of their selection of cheese, fresh produce, breads, healthy snacks(trailmix, nuts, yogurt-covered pretzels, etc.), yogurt, juices, cereal. They also have all the staples. Goya-anything, rice, spices… Support this place! They keep getting better and better!
