I was absolutely pumped to go to Dr. Cow’s cheese shop. It was a big deal in the vegan community for a totally animal-free cheese shop to open, so it was high on my list of things to visit in New York. It’s in a bit of a sketchy neighborhood, but the shopfront was cute and well-kept. The woman behind the counter was amazingly helpful with letting us try samples, talking about the sizes available, and being patient while we deliberated about what type of cheese to buy. All the flavors we tried while there were great, my problem was the pricing. I know nuts are expensive, and I expected the cheese to be pricey, but they wouldn’t sell us smaller slices of cheese. I would have loved to buy small slivers of four or five flavors for a cheese plate, but we could only buy larger chunks that were about $ 8+ in pricing. Because of this, we ended up getting two flavors(celery salt and blue algae) with crackers and it was about $ 25. I was happy with what we got and we really enjoyed the food, but it would have been so much better if you could buy more variety without breaking the bank.

Best cheese I’ve ever had. Will be making a pilgrimage to this place every time I go to NYC from now on. Good excuse to go to Williamsburg

Tiny little storefront that must be a godsend for the forcibly vegan, cheese-yearning folks out there. Mostly cashew-based and both samples were actually quite good, even for someone who eats the animal-based stuff. Raspberry cookie was mealy and tiny for $ 1.25, unfortunately, so stick with the savory.

Went in to buy some hard cheeses and desserts for my Thanksgiving date who is vegan. They were very generous in their samples, and everything I tried was delicious. The prices were much less expensive than I had anticipated, and there was an incredible variety of flavors(not seen on their website). I would definitely recommend checking this place out– it’s pretty awesome.

The cakes and cookies are ok! Not bad but also not really tasty! Had better ones! A little overpriced!

Dr Cow is basically a vegan fantasy come true. As someone who values a clean, whole-foods diet, the hyper processed, chemical-laden vegan cheeses you can find in the mainstream market(e.g. Daiya, Follow Your Heart) have always made me a bit uneasy. While these products do taste pretty similar to Velveeta or other cheez products, there historically has been no vegan counterpart to the rich, salty, complex European wheels you get at the cheese counter. When I first learned last year that it was possible to create non-dairy cheese by culturing and aging nut milks just as you would animal milk, I immediately began scouring the internet for a vegan fromagerie. It seemed to me that if that kind of thing existed anywhere, it would have to be here in NYC. To my disappointment, my googling kept coming up empty. I’d given up on the idea, but then randomly searched again last week, and, to my delight, discovered that Dr Cow had opened a cheese shop in Williamsburg(where else?). I’d tried Dr Cow cheese before from local shops and really enjoyed it, so I was thrilled to check out their very own brick-and-mortar store. The place is itty bitty, but with a display of several artisanal vegan cheeses made of cashews, almonds, and macadamias, with various mix-ins. I know there are now recipes out there for nut-milk versions of dairy favorites like brie, mozzarella, and gruyère, but Dr Cow doesn’t try to approximate any of these, instead coming up with their own selection of interesting flavors and textures. These cheeses don’t taste like dairy cheese per se, but they are equally rich, salty, and complex, so can serve the same function and lend themselves equally well to a cheese plate. The shopkeeper was super friendly and helpful, though my only complaint was that she was unfortunately only able to give me samples of their basic hard cheese, which I’d already tried. Given that their cheese add-ins were so unique(e.g. different types of seaweed, vegetables, and spices), it felt impossible to choose the right one without being able to taste it. In any case, I lucked out and, with her recommendation, decided on a cashew-kale-shilajit(don’t ask me what that is – I’m not sure, even after reading all about it online) cheese which turned out to be tangy, smokey, and salty, almost reminiscent of gorgonzola. Anyway, I’m thrilled this place exists and hope it will thrive.

Delicious, delicious, delicious. What can I say about this tree nut cheese? Even a non-vegan will love this cheese. Thus far, I’ve had the Cashew Nut Cream Cheese, Aged Cashew Nut Cheese, and the Aged Cashew and Crystal Manna Algae Cheese and Dr. Cow gets five full stars. If you’re calorie/saturated fat conscious, well, no need to fret. These cheeses are: «Low in fat, sodium, calories, zero cholesterol, high in iron and vegetable protein.» Only negative is that San Diego does not carry Dr. Cow’s products –just yet. Whole Foods? Henry’s? I am inspired to write and request they carry this cheese. Enjoy!
