John’s an excellent teacher — he’s patient, positive and is able to have his eyes/ears focused on several things at once.
I had never played drums before our first lesson, and now, after a month of lessons, I feel very confident behind a drum set and am able to play along with several songs. Before our first lesson, John asked what type of music I was most interested in and has been catering my lessons for that style, which has also been great.
The structure of the lessons is super productive — about half of the time is spent on more technical aspects, and the other half is spent working on learning and playing beats. I end up going home with just the right amount of stuff to practice to keep me busy without getting overwhelmed.
I highly recommend!

Great experience at this drum school!
I took lessons from John over the summer when I had more free time after work. I’ve never played the drums before but always wanted to and was worried that starting off as an adult I’d be trudging through a lot of tedious lessons to start where I had the basics drilled into my head. But even the early lessons were fun! John definitely teaches technique but he also takes time every lesson to ask you what you like and want to learn and will show you a little bit of the basic technique from styles you like. I got to play along with my favorite Black Lips song after just a few lessons! John is also really patient and positive which is nice because I don’t have a drum kit at home and would stumble a while through the beginning of the lesson. The only draw back I thought there would be before going is that the location seemed a little far out on the map, but actually its just a short walk from the Greenpoint Ave G and he has a nice studio setup for the lessons. I will definitely be going back for more lessons when I have some more time after work!
