Gary the Barber

I went this past Sunday, Zack cut my hair. Lots of communication, made sure he knew what I wanted and didn’t want. I got an Ewan McGregor kind of thing but only 2″ long on top, goes with my short scrabbly beard… basic styling required — not an intensely difficult style — but I have a lot of dense hair, a cowlick, and my hair does this Bozo the Clown /​Mao Tse Tung thing on the sides if the stylist isn’t careful… it was long and totally out of control when I walked in (they’re open ’til 7 or 7:30pm on Sundays, which is why I went in the first place). Zack removed the bulk of hair with the trimmer then 10 – 15 minutes of scissor-​work really shaping the hair so it wasn’t just head-​shaped. I think the end result is Salon quality at Barbershop prices. I will definitely go back and I’m recommending Gary’s to my two sons. It’s good to know there’s a place nearby I can go where I don’t have to worry about a chop-​job haircut (I’ve had so many bad ones at so many different places I’d just grown apprehensive about getting haircuts anymore). Who knows… I might even get my next haircut before I start to look like a Wookie the next time!

I usually go to Manhattan to get my hair cut. Today I dropped in on Gary, being his first customer. Gary is a meticulous, careful, craftsman and I walked away with a hair cut that I really enjoyed. Highly recommended. Best haircut I’ve received in Bay Ridge in years.

100% without a doubt the best hair cut in Bay Ridge. Been living nearby for 2 years, tried a few places and would consider traveling back here when I move to other areas in the city.

I’ve been going to Gary’s place now on and off for just about a year and the last two times I’ve had Zak cut my hair. All due respect to Gary, but both myself and my fiancé think Zak does the best job of anyone who’s ever cut my hair, at least as long as we’ve been together. He always listens to my concerns about the length of my beard versus my regular hair and also remembers how I part my hair and the #2 trimmer. Parking is a little hard in the area but that’s really the only downside. They give out free water. Pretty basic shop but everyone is super friendly and it’s a nice neighborhood place. Easy access via the R train.

I had the worse hair cut experience today at Gary’s Barber Shop. I was greeted by their older looking female associate and initially when she asked me what I wanted (an undercut with a 1 ½ fade on the sides + shape up and lines near the top) i thought she knew what she was doing. But instead it was a horrible 45 minute experience. I’ve never had so many cuts on my head, she kept digging into my scalp and skin with the buzzer. I was not treated the same way Gary had when he gave me my first cut (this is the 4^th time i been to the shop, 2 times by gary and 1 other time by his younger female associate. I did not end up getting what I went in for and am very upset with what I got. If i ever go back I will request for only Gary to give the cut.

Needed a haircut and my usual place (that I have never been thrilled with) was closed. Looked for a place on Unilocal close by and Gary the Barber popped up. I could not be happier. Finally a barber that actually listened, understood what I was looking for and made some minor recommendations. He was meticulous and precise and gave me the best haircut I have had in many years! My new go-​to spot.

This guy is amazing. Not only are his rates reasonable, but he has amazing precision with his tools. I always come out of here feeling like I got more than what I paid for. Highly recommend this guy.

I went to this place because of the race reviews and I had a very similar experience. I walked in was taken immediately offered a glass of wine and out in 20 minutes with the exact haircut I asked for. You have a new loyal customer.

The reviews so far are pretty spot-​on. Gary is one of the hardest working guys in the neighborhood– convenient hours, meticulous in his work, and always friendly. Will generally prioritize you if you call ahead, but I’ve never had a problem dropping in. Is efficient but doesn’t rush if there are people waiting behind you which is great. Cuts and beard trims have always been spot on– without stray hairs or needing revisions. This guy takes pride in his business and his work.

If you’re in bay ridge area! If you are super particular about how and who cuts your hair! If you’d rather go with out than get a bad haircut! Then you’re like me! I’m not from Brooklyn so when I went to Gary’s Barber Shop I was in desperate need of a fresh haircut but what I stumbled on to was the gold standard of barber shops! This guy, Gary is a perfectionist to say the least. He’s not happy till your cut is perfect! Barbers like him are one and a million! You’ll look your best when you leave there! I won’t come back to Brooklyn without getting a haircut from now on!

Anna gave me the most thorough and complete haircut I’ve ever had. The place is clean and bright. And Lana gently strove to find out exactly what I was looking for in a haircut without making me feel uncomfortable.

Gary is very detail oriented and I felt very comfortable with him cutting my hair because he listened to my haircut needs unlike other barbers in the past. He was extremely friendly and I recommend him to everyone.
Lana who has a chair in his shop has also cut my hair. Very much like Gary, Lana is very friendly, and extremely detail oriented.
Both of them very highly skilled and made sure that my haircut looked good from every angle.

I get the best haircut from Alana and my husband gets his best haircut from Gary They are both great people very kind and very welcoming.

Gary is the man! This was my second time getting a haircut here, and both experiences were nothing short of awesome. He’s friendly, super detailed and never rushes. You can’t beat the price, and he stays open late. I’m not exaggerating when I say he does the best haircuts I’ve ever had. So if you want the perfect haircut complete with using a straight razor to clean up your neck hair, go see Gary!

The second time I came here I got the pleasure to get my hair precision cut by Gary himself. The first time I came, Lana did the styling and cutting. Gary offered me a shot of vodka. need i say more? The meticulous care that both Gary and Lana take in their work is obvious. Do yourself a favor and get your pretty locks cut by true masters!

I’ve been getting my haircuts from an excellent barber in Boston while I was in college so I was really on a quest to find one around home. In need of a cut ahead of an interview, I went to Gary the barber. It is one of those shops that can be deceiving on first glance. A small, cozy shop located on a side street of Bay Ridge. The barber Gary was extremely friendly and knowledgable. We discussed different areas of my head as he was cutting it to make sure I was getting what I wanted. A down to earth, accommodating guy. Make sure to check it out if you are in need of a thorough, skillful barber!

I started going to Gary last year after my regular barber moved away, and I definitely made the right decision. I’ve been consistently satisfied with every haircut I’ve gotten from him, and his hours can’t be beat. He’s overall a great guy — calm, conversational, and best of all he’s just a few blocks away.
Also, a nice plus for those of us that carry credit and sometimes forget to bring cash: the barbershop accepts credit card via Square!

Gary is the man! I very rarely write reviews, but I figured Gary deserves to be recognized for being a great barber and an all-​around good guy. I recently moved into the neighborhood, a few blocks away. I’ve never had a go-​to barber that was convenient, affordable, friendly, and talented until I met Gary. I dropped in a few weeks back for a beard trim and shave, and having tried a couple other Bay Ridge barbers with no luck, I went into Gary’s because his sign looked cool – maybe naïve to judge a book by its cover, but it proved awesome. I loved it, so I came back today for a cut and shave and he didn’t disappoint. He understands current trends and classic cuts. He’s not confused when I use terms like undercut, pompadour, combover or slick-​back.
He’s calm, he’s friendly, and he always asks to make sure you’re comfortable, that the machine isn’t hurting you, and that what he’s doing is exactly what you want. He even gives me a complimentary hot towel pre-​shave.
On top of that, he takes credit cards through Square so I never have to calculate and pull cash out on cut-​day anymore!
