Everything was delicious! Had the spare ribs, queso Mac and cheese, Vietnamese wings, potato salad, cornbread and a couple slices of turkey. Seating was a cafeteria feel, get in where you fit in situation. Had to order a lemonade from the bar paid separately. I didn’t trust the self serve water coolers after watching someone come out with a bucket of water to refill it. Everything was A bit pricey, and loud, I wouldn’t recommend bringing children in the evening. Wings were amazingly crispy Loved it!!! Other than then wings, the food was served luke warm. I wasn’t happy spending $ 100 bucks at the counter for dinner for 2. I quickly got over it sitting on the bench doing my happy dance and stuffing my face. No service, tips where unnecessary. Napkins, water or drink refills you’re on your own. Still the delicious food compels me to come back.

Again, I’m from the south. I live for BBQ, and since my recent relocation to NYC, I e struggled to find anything remotely considered good. That said, this place is punch your momma in the mouth with a closed fist wrapped around brass knuckles good. It’s like going on a rage and dropping a Fiat on someone’s head good. I had the spare ribs, and a ¼ chicken with the beans and instantly put myself into a food coma. We went on a lunch break, and it was the biggest mistake I made for the month as I was completely useless for the rest of the day. The only thing that would help me was a couch, a remote, and something alcoholic. Get here, and get here fast. Excellent food, great staff, and the best blues playlist I’ve heard since I moved here.

I always make sure to come at odd hours to any popular BBQ joint because otherwise, the lines are just horrendous. Hometown BBQ definitely fits in this category as its popularity is well known and even at odd hours, a line will be there. After taking the free Ikea ferry on Sunday, my friend and I arrived with only having to wait 15 minutes. We ordered ½ a pound of brisket and ½ pound of pork spare ribs. We were originally going to get the beef rib but it was just too big, selling typically at a pound and half. It looked delicious but we just had to go with something of «smaller» portion. Both meats were really delicious. The crusted seasoning of the meats was perfect. The ribs were fall of the bone. The brisket was soft and tender. I did find the meats to be a bit less moist compared to other bbq joints I had but because the seasoning was so well done and it was still tender, it was still delicious in my BBQ book. As for the sides, we shared to mac and cheese(medium size), corn bread and sour whiskey pickles(small size). The corn bread was hands down my favorite. Super corny, super buttery. It had a nice outer crunch on the ends and was super soft and moist on the inside. The pickles were crisp and sour. Plenty to share in a small sized cup. My least favorite unfortunately was the mac and cheese. Although it was super creamy and they topped it off with some of their texas queso, the texture was just okay. I am glad I tried it but I don’t think I would go out of my way to get it again. It was made from small shell pastas and found it to be too soft and didn’t complement the overly cheesy rue. Overall, a great try of New York BBQ. The restaurant décor is rustic with a good amount of seats to sit and enjoy the meal. I definitely would love to come back and try that monster of a beef rib!

Went on a friday night. Long line and hard to find seats. Had a party of 3 and it was a self serve restaurant. when it was our turn to order, they had no more pulled pork. Will definitely come back and try it next time. The ribs are delicious!!! Especiallythe fat! But the brisket on the other hand wasn’t that great. The sides were not bad but had better.

I absolutely love barbecue. I’ve had this booked marked for awhile and finally got to try it! It’s a close trip to or from ikea. I recommend you to go to ikea first incase you get hit with the food coma. First step in and it feels so cozy even though it was not fully packed and spacious. The bartender greeted us and was extremely friendly and non hesitant to explain and show us where to order. We ordered a Thick Slab Pastrami Bacon, Jamaican Jerk Ribs, Sausage and Smoked Pit Beans with brisket burnt ends. The Pastrami Bacon had too much fat meat. It would’ve been great if not for the excessive amount of fat on it. Ribs were tasty! Effortless meat falling off the bone. Sausage was juicy. The beans… Man I tell you… Those beans were amazing. I love the burnt brisket ends in it too. Should’ve ordered a large to go): They have this hot and sweet sauce that goes pretty good with the ribs, much better than ordinary bbq sauce. Overall great food, atmosphere was pleasant.

The BF& I were spending the day exploring the area of Red Hook. After a great lunch at the Red Hook Lobster Pound and a full day of drinking, we headed to Hometown BBQ for dinner. The line is LONG(about a 45+ wait), but at least I had a whiskey sour in hand and some live country music to listen to! We shared the brisket, pulled pork, wood fired chicken, Texas-style queso mac & cheese, hometown slaw, and corn bread. Everything was super tasty and you get a real feel of that authentic Southern atmosphere!

So after trying about 4 different bbq joints in Brooklyn, I have to say that this is my favorite place. The smoked meats well prepared, from the quality of meats, to the seasoning to the cooking. In addition the fact that I can order a drink while waiting in line is a plus. Keep up the good work!

I had a long list of places to try in the city while I was visiting for the weekend but our hosts, who know their food, insisted we come here. I am SO glad we did! We arrived around 9ish on a Friday night and were greeted by an enormous line(it was almost an hour long!) Thankfully we had anticipated this and didn’t come too hungry. We were also kept occupied during the wait by a pretty decent selection of cheap beer and fun cocktails! The only thing we found really frustrating is that they ran out of food as the night wore on. It definitely sucked to have to watch them cross one menu item after another off the board as we were stuck waiting. By the time it was our turn to order, they had run out of a lot of the stars(the lamb belly, beef ribs, and almost all of their pork rib options). That said, we still managed to get the brisket, some chicken, wings, and a bunch of sides. And let me tell you, it was all SOOOO good and still far more than what we could actually manage to eat. The brisket was tender enough to eat it with a spoon, the wings were easily the best I’ve ever had, and their mac and cheese is mind blowingly good! I definitely recommend this place. Just come early and not too hungry.

IFYOUAREFROMTEXAS, KANSASCITY, ORTHESOUTH, DONOTGOHERE. This barbecue is crap I would not even feed to my dog. In fact, I tried to feed it to my dog and he would not eat it. I spent $ 60 plus here trying everything and there is nothing I can recommend, other than the nice dining room. Green onions on top of too-spicy ribs? Baked beans that were more like brown paste? The(moist) brisket was average, although perhaps for BBQ-starved New Yorkers it’s above average? YUCK. You can get better brisket from a Texas gas station. Do not wait in line or pay exhorbitant prices for mediocre food. Book a flight to Austin or one of the other great barbecue cities in the USA instead.

Friend told me the wait would be 1 hour+. I laughed. Then cried. Because it turned out to be 1.3 hours. As we inched towards the counter we had the staff come up to the menus on the walls to put rubber magnet things on the items that were sold out… and every time everyone wailed in misery…(some a$$wipe cussed the staff out about this — chill it with the shots, bro, you ain’t in Jersey Shore) I’m just so confused why the service is so slow. Duane Reade has more registers open at 4 am in the middle of nowhere town New Jersey. Anyhow, on to the food… The brisket is a must! It’s less fatty then any other bbq place i’ve gotten brisket at, so really liked that. Less congealed fat all over the meat slab when i took the leftovers home. I do think it could have used a bit more seasoning, I found it bland. The wings — I don’t know why it’s called Vietnamese wings, it’s more like sweet bbq sauce so it feels like Korean fried chicken. I don’t think I’ve found the wings during the four years I’ve lived in Vietnam. But anyhow, they’re good. Crispy! The baby back ribs — it’s surprisingly dry. I’d skip it. Mac n Cheese — this was almost worth the 1+hour wait. Almost. Mac and cheese here is better than Fette Sau and Mighty Quinn’s. Collard Greens — a bit on the salty side. Meh. Overall: Yay! I’m a fan of the food but A-OK about the wait & service.

I never used to order brisket. When I would see people on TV people talking about barbecue in Texas, they would always talk about the brisket, people who«know about barbecue» always talk about brisket. Every time I tried brisket it was disappointing, normally it’s way too dry for me. This is the first time that I’ve really understood what people are talking about with good brisket. The brisket is super flavorful, juicy, tender, and has a nicely defined bark on the outside. There was a prominent smoke ring on the meat. I could not get over the flavor of this brisket. Nice pepper flavor in the bark, but not overwhelming. The meat shines here. Delicious. The lamb belly was sort of like pulled lamb. I have never had lamb prepared this way before. I love lamb, and this was no exception. My second favorite meat on the platter, lots of flavor, not quite as juicy as the brisket, but absolutely I would recommend this to anyone who likes lamb. Pulled pork is usually my go to at any barbecue place. One of the most impressive things about my experience at Hometown Bar-B-Que is that all the other meats that I tried were better than the pulled pork. The pulled pork was very good, perhaps not my favorite pulled pork that I have tried, but up there. There was a lot more seasoning in the pulled pork than I expected, it was an orange-y color. The sides were also impressive. I tried the collards, the cole slaw, and the macaroni and cheese. The collards had some good chunks of meat in there, my guess would be the pulled pork, but before some of the seasoning was added. This was a meaty collard green, one that I could eat buckets of. Great flavor, greens weren’t over cooked or tough. The cole slaw was a more mildly flavored slaw, which I like. It paired well with the meat. It was a drier slaw which, in my opinion, is one of the truest signs of a good cole slaw. The macaroni and cheese was good, but probably my least favorite thing on the platter that we got. Decent flavor, but not overwhelming or anything. I would eat it again, but there are other more impressing things on the menu here to spend your money on. Hip/country look the place. It opened at noon on Sunday and there was a 20 minute line by 12:01. While I didn’t actually stand in the line, I’d say it is more than worth it. Best barbecue that I have had to date(only compared to Philadelphia area so far, we’ll see how it holds up to the Austin elite this summer).

My heart beats for love! And BBQ! For the godamn love of BBQ. When Hometown is so close to home it is so difficult to resist! God — Billy, Thank you for bringing true BBQ to Brooklyn and staying at the top of the game. Let’s start with walking in to this awesome heaven hub. The smell of BBQ hits you like a shot in the heart. Transports you straight to Texas. If you’re going to go here during the day/weekend be ready to stand an hour or so in line awaiting your turn. My most recent visit happened to have been at 10PM so the lines weren’t there anymore which is of course an absolute pleasure. Customer service is beyond incredible. When we got up to the counter, the wonderful and friendly guys behind the counter were quirky, funny and helpful with taking our order(I am the most indecisive order giver? I just want everything) There is another counter to order drinks. The bartender was fabulous and just as awesome as the other guys taking our food order. We ordered wine and cider from him. We ordered the pastrami cured ribs,(CRAZY!!!) what a beautiful bark, smoke and taste! I didn’t just find heaven, I got to taste it too and didn’t want it to end. The brisket as well, god! Incredible, incredible. Soft, lean so tasty and a beautiful smoke ring. The spicy wings are delicious. They have a good lot of chicken on them so it’s not just eating bone and it’s spicy AF! I was barely able to finish when my tacos came along. I ordered the brisket tacos and of course they were just as tasty and amazing as everything else we had already eaten. They also have whisky pickles. GETTHEM! They are actually whisky infused, so be careful: P. Overall, overall, Oh why am I even saying that. Of course it’s an incredible experience dining here. No doubt I’ll be back, like real soon because my heart still beats for the love of BBQ.

I know it’s such a cop-out to deduct a star for higher-than-average prices. Hometown’s offerings are far better than average, so shouldn’t it be a get-what-you-pay-for sort of deal? Yes, it should, but since I am a poor person and a barbecue addict and quite spiteful, this is where we are. Undoubtedly the best brisket I’ve had since coming to Brooklyn. I’m a North Carolina boy born and raised, so my penchant for brisket is frowned upon by my elders in the first place. But we don’t choose who we love. The line on a Saturday around 5:00 was streaming out the door, but my buddies and I had journeyed to Red Hook solely for this purpose. Fortunately, Hometown was offering an in-line beverage service, and a round of Tecates helped the time pass and served to stoke the flames of our appetites. Once we made it up front, the«brisket baron» handed us freshly cut hunks off a just-outta-the-smoker slab. If my mind hadn’t been made up at that point, you could call it the point of no return – melt-in-your-mouth, generous fat content that complemented the rich, smoky beef especially well, and the rub. My god, that rub. Thickly applied, sweet and savory, rich to the core, perfect texture. I ordered a half-pound of the brisket with a large side of collard greens — $ 18 for the brisket and $ 9 for the greens. Tack on a $ 5 Tecate and I laid down a pretty penny at hometown. Again, back to what we were discussing before: worth it? Absolutely. Somehow, the four stars still stands. Ah, an excuse! $ 9 for collard greens. They were great, but that is one minor absurdity. The small sides were $ 4. Go with those. My friends got sides of mac and cheese and banana pudding, and both were wonderful. The portions at Hometown are ideal for a voracious slightly-larger-than-average 26-year-old man-child. After my last bite of brisket, I felt slightly sad it was all gone, but completely content appetite-wise. Great experience. Picnic-style seating, and truly the best BBQ in NY. I’ll be back soon. And if I start making a little more money somehow in the near future, I’ll come back in and tack on the final star here. Strange justification, I know. I’m just a strange man who loves good ‘cue.

Pretty good BBQ overall. Located in hipster Brooklyn, this is great area to come for food, by-the-water gazing and taking a trip to Ikea nearby. Came here for Sunday food, but even coming relatively early on a Sunday still ended up with a 45 minute wait. Don’t worry though, the line is a bit deceiving(as in we thought it was shorter than it really was!) The place itself looks really really cool(all dark wood) with cafeteria bench style seating. There is a main area where you can order food, a separate bar area and a general seating space. There is also a second area where there is another bar area and seating. I would recommend Hometown BBQ start venting the air in the main room — it smells too smokey to the point my lungs know it may hurt to breathe. Just a thought… Now to the food: Brisket — Delicious though not the best I’ve ever had. Great flavor, slightly dry in certain spots but overall I really liked it. Lamb belly — Holy crap this is deliciously decadent. The best part of the meal — amazing at first bite and oh so decadently fatty by the end. You need a beer in hand while eating this. Do not miss getting lamb belly. Mac and Cheese — Tasty but not the best I’ve ever had. They have a wonderful selection of beer so make sure to get some beer when eating delicious BBQ food. Pretty good BBQ that is cheaper than some of the places in the city. Worth it to come and try their food.

If Hometown was anywhere else in the city or Williamsburg, you’ll never be able to find a seat. This bbq joint is designed as a southern style where everyone orders from the counter and then you find your own seat. There are many seats here with two separate rooms and two separate bars. You can be on benches in the louder area or you can go to the more family friendly separate room with regular tables. The food here is easily one of the best in New York. They have all the usual pulled pork, brisket, ribs, chicken, and even bacon. The sides can be beans, Mac and cheese, okra, etc. The bar is full and beers are craft. This is a hipster and foodie dream place! We had the pastrami bacon to start, followed by jerk ribs some pulled pork, some beans, Mac n cheese, and brisket. Knowing us, we had small portions of everything to try. Only complaint is the bacon is just too fatty and salty. That’ll take some beers and water to wash down for sure. Everything else we had was delicious and filling. You’ll be surprised how quickly a quarter pound of meat will fill you up. Thankfully, we slowly but surely chipped away at the meat mounds. This is worth a drive from anywhere to eat!

Went on a Saturday night around 6pm and the line wasn’t so bad… however, it does move very slowly! The menu isn’t very extensive and drinks are sold separately at the bar. Here’s the breakdown: –brisket: a bit on the chewier(read: dry) side. meh, i’ve had better –lamb belly: pretty darn good. fatty, a little gamey. so yum! my fave of the meats. –chicken: a-okay. interestingly, it has a ginger/scallion sauce on the side that is very reminiscent of a Chinese«white cut chicken.» –jamaican jerk ribs: pretty standard ribs. i liked them, would probably order again –sausage: you can definitely taste that they’re homemade and very fresh(not smokey, and not over-seasoned with salt/nitrates). –mac and cheese: bleh. way too salty and cheese is overwhelming. pass. –potato salad: my fave side. just perfect. –coleslaw: it’s alright, just had to order some vegetables, because everything is fatty meat or carbs. The bar had a nice variety of beers on tap. Got my six point sweet action and this mild cider that tastes like carbonated apple juice my brother really liked. :P

I’m from South Carolina, so I have high standards for bbq. Hometown hit the spot. Good bbq is SO hard to find in NYC, so after this place kept popping up on foodie blogs and such, I put it on my list of places to try. My boyfriend and I were planning a trip to Ikea today, so it was the perfect time to go to Hometown for lunch! It’s a very spacious restaurant, with two large seating areas, two bars, and a stage for live music in one of them. The line moves super quickly. You give the first person your meat order, and the second person serves up the sides and rings you up. Both of the people we interacted with were friendly and efficient. Our total was about $ 40 for the pulled pork sandwich, brisket sandwich, medium side of mac and cheese, and medium side of collard greens. Both of the sandwiches had excellent flavor! They were super juicy and the meat was very tender. I liked the pulled pork better because it had«hometown slaw» on it and a bolder flavor. They really didn’t need any extra sauce or anything though. They have two types of sauce-one is a bit spicy and the other is sweet. The bread on each was great too, and the meat didn’t make it soggy. The sides were amazing. The mac and cheese had roasted chiles in it and a distinct, delicious flavor. The texture was perfect-not overly saturated with melted cheese, but not hard and dry either. The collard greens were so full of flavor! They had smoked pork shoulder bits in them. I’ve eaten a lot of mac and cheese and collard greens, and these were definitely some of the best I’ve had. Don’t let the trip to Red Hook deter you-it’s an easy walk from the F and G trains, and lots of other great bars and restaurants in the area!

Damn good BBQ and service. There’s not much else in the area but well worth the trek. We caught the M61 from Borough hall which dropped us off right across the street. We came for lunch on a Saturday and there was no wait. The place is huge — one bar area and another area for BBQ. It’s all self serve — you order and seat yourself. All the utensils, water and take out boxes are by the counter. Brisket(¼ lb) — juicy and flavorful. The outside looks charred but it’s actually the rub they use that makes it look that way. The guy cutting the meat even gave several of us in line a sample. Beef ribs(1 lb) — very tender and came right off the bone. Minimum order is one pound Jerk ribs(½ lb) — good Mac & cheese — so bad but so good, they even had bacon or ham bits in it Collard greens — standard greens to offset all the fatty goodness Excellent service as well, my husband loves BBQ so he tends to over order. We originally ordered a half pound of brisket in addition to all the meat above and the guy told us it was too much and recommended a quarter pound. We were so glad we took his suggestion because we still had leftovers to take home!

The lamb-belly, beef-rib, and beef-brisket are phenomenally & sensationally cooked, but, unfortunately, get boring after a few bites. It’s very succulent, overwhelming meat, and it needs something to cut the fat, maybe some lemon-lime-grapefruit-orange zest and/or juice, but the two sauces they provide really don’t do it for me, at all. The sauces are tasty on their own, but they are too thick and too sugary for the meat, and don’t actually enhance the experience, but, rather, are conflicting & actually disguise the meaty-meatiness. So maybe next time I’ll just order these meats in sandwich form, which is a shame, but I’m sure they will be delicious. Jamaican Spare-ribs and Sriracha Chicken-wings are definitely a winner, and absolutely crowdpleasers, as are the amazing beans with brisket. The potato salad is hit or miss, one time it was way too raw-vinegary, caustic and acrid, but last night it was bangin’ spot-on terrific. And I really just do not like their mac and cheese or their cornbread. Awesome location, secluded and spacious. Helpful, friendly staff. Nice atmosphere, warm ambiance.
