I took my first class just a couple of days ago. I took the adult handstand class, it was amazing! It was my first time attempting a handstand or anything near a handstand and although I wasn’t very good and I wasn’t able to do one on my own yet it helped me face my fear and become closer to doing one. I believe I was the only one in the class who had never done a handstand before and everyone in the class was so patient and welcoming I really felt so comfortable and eager to learn just from the people who surrounded me. I will definitely be coming back every week to keep on practicing. P.s Sarah the instructor was awsome!!! Very thorough and helpful she was also very sweet!

Attended a performance there with a combination of acrobatics and music. Was very impressed with the quality of the entertainment– and the welcoming spirit. The place, clean comfortable– and two blocks from the subway… Would I return? Absolutely…

LAVA! These folks are fab-u-lous! As a non-dancer, non-acrobat, inflexible runner-type, deciding to take classes at LAVA was like deciding I should be an astronaut, but I quickly realized I had nothing to fear! LAVA, an all-female dance and acrobatic troupe that has been around for about a decade, teaches their talents to both kids and adults. Very much part of the Prospect Heights community, LAVA offers a free community class to kids each week and hosts a monthly(ish) open-mic-type community show in their big open space. The classes change each season, but tend to focus on strength/tumbling/handstands/partnering and sometimes trapeze. The teachers are excellent and are really good at adjusting the classes to fit your skill set and ability level. Everyone is incredibly friendly and I can easily say I’ve made a number of new friends from class. This place tends to attract the female/queer crowd, but everyone of all abilities and genders are definitely welcome. They offer work study, so if the class prices are scary, know that they will definitely find a way to make it work on whatever budget you have. I love that LAVA exists and that non-acrobats like me have a space to fall in love with the art, and ourselves, and our bodies and make friends and move and get stronger and more confident and hang out and grow.

This is my love letter to Lava. I started taking their Introduction to Lava class in September and it was so inspiring, so motivating, that I am now taking Lava II and Tumbling. Their class pushed me to do things I was convinced I couldn’t and allowed me to play. The instructors never make me feel incompetent because I am not strong enough, but rather give me the tools to become stronger and braver. Lava’s classes have made me a better person and I love every floorboard, nail, mat, every piece of that studio. All the instructors are performers and they are beautiful to watch, so go see their shows as well, wherever you may find them. Worth every penny and every second I spend here.
