What the hell happened to this place? They were shutdown by the health dept, then re-opened for about a month, then shut themselves down in July. When are you reopening???

I drove past last weekend and saw paper on all the windows as if they’re closed. Anyone know if it’s temporary or for good?

For some odd reason Marius is closed for the summer, forcing me to begrudgingly visit that other café down the block. Bleh. Open back up soon dammit!

Oh, Marius. I will still come by for the coffee and vibe– especially living around the corner– but I have become so saddened by the changes in the bagels and food. The bagels recipe seems to have changed — they get old and hard much faster. And somehow stick to your teeth. And most sad of all to me — they seem to have replaced butter with margarine. How else to explain a spread that won’t melt, even on second time in the oven, and which leaves a greasy residue at the roof of your mouth… I miss the previous barista and bagel-dude, who were refreshing, down-to-earth and interesting. I’m so sorry to downgrade my rating.

I like this place less and less by the day. As soon as I get familiar with a team of staff, it seems like everyone is fired all at the same time and replaced very quickly. Almost like a stalin thing with a close inner circle that is purged every so often. I never know who I am going to see in there anymore. :( Lately I’ve been going across the street to Mazzola. If this place could ever keep a consistent staff I would come back, but I just give up.

Things I Liked About Marius Café. 1. Sublime covers being played over the PA. 2. Free wi/fi. 3. I now know all about Gaius Marius,* thanks to said wi/fi. 4. Frequent buyer cards. 5. Plugs EVERYWHERE. I love that, because I need the juice. 6. A sweet barista who has no qualms about calling out dudes who come in wearing sunglasses on a cloudy day in a good-humored way. It’s difficult to make fun of someone and not inspire hard feelings. I know, as this is why I don’t have any friends. _________ *Not that I know this place is named after him, but if it wasn’t for the café, I wouldn’t have looked it up:

What’s the deal… why did they get closed by the health department? I miss them…

The people at Marius Café are unfailingly nice. Carroll Gardens is fortunate that we have so many low key locally owned neighborhood cafes and Marius is a great example. The owners and front of house staff are kind and understand your requests, the coffee is of good quality, and the baked goods are tasty. They now serve sandwiches and brunch and have outdoor seating. If I had to nitpick, the to go cups for lattes they use are too large and overpower the coffee content, but that my problem for leaving.

Oh Marius Café, How I want so bad to like you. The people who work here try and the food is fine. but I just can’t take it anymore. It is always a mess. the place is dirty, the workers while nice are all over the place and slow and confused. They redo the interior every few months and it gets worse and worse. Just went today and for some reason they remade the entire counter. There is less seating, people were touching the bagels as they were now out in the middle of the line area… the kitchen is smaller and the disorganization is worse than ever. 15 minutes for a bagel to be made and no one in front of me? please? NO one knows where the lines start or end. 6 people asked each other who was next. Paperwork on top of the stove next to the pancake mix dripping all over? I mean really. It reminds me of my college dorm’s kitchen. I wanted to like Marius so much. and I think they have good bagels and such. but I can’t take the long waits, the disorganization and the horrible, college like, slacker renovations and service. The problem is there is not a place MUCH better around here. that is why they are still in business. they are the best of the worst. Please step up Marius… until then I won’t be back.

Very relaxed atmosphere and while they appear like a small coffee shop, they actually have a very big menu. In fact, they have a ton of stuff you won’t find in every café(ex: bagels with strawberry cream cheese). I have been here 2 – 3 times and the food was always delicious and the service top notch. Each time I had quick breakfast food, so I can’t comment on their sandwiches and platters. It’s the perfect type of place if you’re home on a weekday and want to sit around relaxing and enjoying the yummy food and free wi-fi
