I didn’t know exactly what to expect when I first stepped foot into this gallery, but I knew I was in for a very special treat because Mighty Tanaka was showcasing a street artist who I absolutely adore. This small gallery is located on the 2nd floor of an obscure warehouse and also home to multiple galleries just upstairs conveniently located right at the entrance so finding it wasn’t difficult. Alex the owner/curator was especially great because never once did I feel rushed or pressured to buy anything. Instead, he left me alone, while I freely walked around to appreciate the art quietly without any interruptions. Once I expressed interest and asked questions, he was very warm and easy to talk to. More impressively, Alex really knows his stuff and was very knowledgeable when it came to art. Not only did he tell me in detail what was good but he also told me why it’s good too. That was a huge plus!!! In the end, I did end up buying a piece of artwork from him and I’m completely 100% satisfied with my experience and couldn’t ask for more. This was my first big purchase and it was fun and exciting because I really do love the art world. My experience at Mighty Tanaka was absolutely splendid and I highly recommend anyone who is walking around DUMBO to stop by and visit. If you’re not planning to buy anything it’s also okay because in the end, the art is there for all to appreciate!!!

Always have some great shows, if you’re going to galleries on a Thursday and making the rounds in DUMBO, def stop by this place. The last show they had here involved explosives knitted out of wool, with innovative artists like that it makes it a great stop.

Small gallery in one of those large art-warehouse spaces that hosts a lot of interesting artists, particularly those doing street-art or street inspired work. There’s not much room for loitering, though there are a few nice seats and a couch in the center of the gallery, so I wouldn’t say its an ideal place to plan to spend your entire evening. The owner-operator was really friendly and informative about the art. I’d recommend any time you are interested in what they’re showing, only suggestion would be if you’re looking to get some serious drinking and hanging out done at an opening, this might not be an ideal place to plan to hang for long periods of time.

I don’t really know what Tanaka means; although I have a feeling I may have been told once. But I do know what Mighty means, and mighty is the perfect word to describe this gallery! One of the best reason to go to DUMBO if it’s not where you live, and if you do live in DUMBO and you haven’t visited this gallery yet I shake my fist at you. In fact, I don’t know why it has taken me so long to review this place. Mighty Tanaka according to their website is «devoted to the advancement of breakthrough art forms that express our generation’s voice and steadfastness.» And how can you not love that ‘mighty’ idea. They are«driven by urban inspiration and is constantly clearing the way for this growing artistic renaissance to expand beyond the gallery walls and into our personal lives.» Another word I know the meaning to, is amazing… Ah-mazing! Their walls have hung the likes of JMR(and thanks to them my own wall hangs one), Hellbent, Adam Void, Ellis G., Skewville, and Robbie Busch to name a very few. And I know you might be saying, «But I’ve never heard of those people» and all I can say is «But I’m sure you’ve seen their work before»… and«Why NOT?!» When you walk into the small but spacious gallery you will feel at home, and are treated like family. Guaranteed! The space almost gives it’s self over to the art that hangs on it’s walls, becoming in a sense a true museum of artist. It’s worth the trip, worth the time, and worth the cost. Cost being FREE! That is unless you decide to buy art, which you should. My little apartment has 6 pieces of art I have purchased from Mighty Tanaka, and if I don’t walk in their doors as much as I should(want) it’s because I’m worried about running out of wall space!

I have NEVER stepped foot in this gallery a day in my life; however, Alex is AWESOME and deserves a gold star!!! This review is solely for their customer service(all I can vouch for) which is what I am all about. I have never experienced such great customer service and via phone/email at that! To sum it up, I don’t own a piece of art nor have I ever wanted to but there was on thing I felt I had to have so I called Mighty Tanaka to track it down and was greeted by Alex. Here are some things that come to mind: Professional Kind Welcoming Helpful Quick Attentive Patient warm Understanding Sweet Now I don’t know if or when I’ll make my first art purchase but these qualities make me want to purchase from this gallery just because of how appreciated I felt; I am looking forward to visiting.

This gallery is awesome! Even on openings it feels like you’re going to a private event-the doorman has to dial you in and make the elevator work with a secret code, you wander through hallways to a very exclusive, and beautiful, looking gallery. Here’s a big bonus: the gallery owners are NICE you feel WELCOMED when you come in. It seems like you always get greeted no matter how many people are in the gallery. As for the artwork itself-it’s GREAT. Such a variety from pop surrealism to street art, all falling under the label of what the owner would term«hybridism.» I have never been disappointed by a show here. There next show is going to be in 3D! That’s right-3D glasses at the door to view some trippy artwork. Look at their website to get more of an idea of their artists. I would seriously recommend checking out a show here, this up and coming gallery is definitely making it’s way into being a staple in the art community. (Also, openings are free and often include a keg of Six Points beer-tips only! Delicious.)
