Modell’s

I feel like the store must be making an effort to up its game in the customer service department, because I had a lovely experience there. Kyle was a wonderful help to me!
I also find the selection of merchandise to be everything I would expect from a sporting goods store, with a decent range of running/​yoga clothing for ladies. Maybe don’t totally write it off.

Of all of the Modell’s in the city this one seems to have the best selection of local team gear:
Yanks — got ‘em.
Mets — got them too.
Knicks — yup.
Nets — obviously.
Jets, Rangers, etc. Yup yup and yup.
I really can’t write to the competency of the staff, seeing as how I didn’t interact with many of them. But I will say that the checkout lines are excruciatingly slow. Three people behind the checkout counter and only one was taking customers when I stepped into the line. Took way too long for me to make my purchase. But it was the only store in the city who had what I needed… so there’s something to be said for that.

Wow. I stand in the shoe area… Looking helpless… And employees walk by, don’t ask me if I need any help or anything. One worker walks by and I ask, «How can you sell shoes if no one is there to sell shoes…» He ignores me and keeps walking. Anyway, you lost a customer, Modells!

Kyle in footwear was extremely helpful and knowledgeable on the phone and then when I came in in person. Made my whole experience a very positive one.

The store is great but the personnel and most of the employees are terrible. Everyone that I countered had an attitude problem and were just not happy. Couldn’t wait to get out of there.
Dear managers: train your staff properly.

I buy all my sneakers here. I think they have good prices on name brand sneakers and a good selection. I also got a yoga mat here. The salesman got kind of mixed up when he helped me and really didn’t know the inventory very well and kind of directed me to the wrong kind of mat (which happened to be more expensive btw). Luckily I had some of my own knowledge of what I was looking for and corrected him. My best advice is go in there with a good idea of what you want so they can’t steer you wrong. I found the same with the sneakers the salespeople don’t know much or do much they just grab shoes. Besides that you are pretty much on your own.

An ok sporting good store but nothing special here. No real skateboard department and instead of focusing on sports stuff they moving into other areas like construction clothing. I guess it good to have a place to buy carharts without going into the city.

This may not be a great sporting goods store…
Evidence:
1. The selection is poor, except when it comes to basketball gear.
2. The employees were unable to help me.
3. In the ‘Soccer Cleats’ section is where you will find the Timberland boots, and not the soccer cleats. I realize some people refer to cleats AS ‘boots,’ but I feel like this should be addressed.
…but when reviewing a business, you have to compare apples to apples. And it is the best of the three Modell’s I’ve been fortunate enough to visit in the area.
Evidence:
1. They have a decent selection of basketball gear.
2. An employee tried to help me, once. I appreciated that.
3. I found a pair of non-​neon cleats for under $ 150. Not in the soccer cleats section of course, but I’ve got eyes so they weren’t too hard to find.
So I think they deserve 3 stars, if we’re grading on the Modell’s Curve.

Had to go in to buy props. The cashier there was mad rude, like repeatedly. We all have crappy days and have to interact with people we don’t want to, but find a way to deal with it.
But service reviews don’t matter as much here cuz if you need a pair of new nikes, you need a pair of new nikes.

Modell’s HQ is wasting this spot — it’s a great location with lots of foot traffic, especially since Barclay’s Center opened. But what the heck is up with this store? Even for a discount store’s standard, this place is sub-​par.
The stock is incredibly low. There’s a decent amount of things for men, but the women’s section is TINY. It’s pretty much just some Nike stuff, Champion, and I had to do a couple laps till I found the minuscule Under Armour section. There’s maybe 1 rack of Adidas pants, and that’s the end of that. If you’re female, any other Modell’s is a better choice to try stuff on.
The staff is nice, but I’m iffy on how knowledgeable they are. For example, one employee recommended my boyfriend buy a thick, pull-​over fleece for running. Even in 34 °F weather here, I guarantee you’ll burn in a fleece like that while running. Didn’t seem to know what to recommend, and was just pointing at the more expensive merchandise.
There are only 2 Fitting Rooms, but they’re veeery spacious. There’s a bench for your stuff and you can jog in a little circle in there.

Thought you had a deal… wrong. Is the staff friendly, yes. Management could use some help though. Items are priced wrong. Go to pay, and the drama starts, you thought you were getting a deal on sneakers, dead wrong. They were priced incorrectly, and you must pay what is rung up at the register. How is it the customer’ s fault if the prices were placed wrong. After almost getting snuffed out like a lit candle by management, I was compensated by their mistake. After leaving the store I felt gracious, but did not appreciate the dismissive attitude from management. Will not return. :(

One of the better Modells in Brooklyn where they have a variety of NBA apparel. Most Modells sell New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets apparel and gear. Not this one. They sell all the popular NBA jerseys and apparel including Houston Rockets Jeremy Lin t-​shirt and jersey. This Modell’s sells a lot of Brooklyn Nets gear because this Modell’s is the official store for the Brooklyn Nets, but you can still get your Knicks gear as they have a good selection there. Other than that. This is just your ordinary modells sporting good store.

I have a hard time rating this place. It is a sporting goods store, and it pretty much has what you would expect, but maybe even a little more narrow. It lacks any original, unique or interesting products. It is largely licensed sport shirts, sporting gear, workout gear and shoes. If you are looking for sporting good gear that isn’t from a sport televised on the main TV stations, I would call before stopping in. As it is mainly a few footballs, soccer balls, some tennis racquets, swim goggles and bats/​gloves. It is kind of 1 small row for each main sport. Consider REI for any outdoor goods, camping, cycling, winter stuff. I don’t remember seeing any at this Modells.
Customer service is so so, but the place isn’t that busy so it isn’t as noticeable. That said, if you see a long line upon entering the store, you might prefer to just leave.

This place is amazing in its badness! Over the years, I have stopped in to buy shoes, socks, exercise gear and I have always walked out empty-​handed. What kind of place is this where I come to spend and they cannot find a way to take my money?
My latest visit was this week. I asked one of the clerks for assistance, she told me that what I wanted was not in her department. After this she leaned back on the merchandise and continued to stare into space. She had referred me to another clerk who had just begun to help a family buying baseball gear for a young boy. I waited a bit and then asked another clerk for help. She referred me again to the clerk who was helping the family. I told her he was busy and that it looked like it would take awhile. She interrupted him and asked him where to find the item I was looking for. This is a small store. How come the clerks do not know where to find anything? There was no effort. I did see some bargains but why bother? The checkout line was long and moving way too slow.

Had what I needed. Robert was cool. In & out.

getting down to your last workout pants is like running out of underwear… you wonder why the tattered item of clothing is still in your drawer instead of the trash, or at the very least why it has not been demoted to a cleaning rag.
as i sit here today wearing a pair with a hole in the crotch competing with that of the ozone (thank baby jesus for long shirts), i am reminded that i need to make a trip to modell’s.
yup. i said modell’s. in addition to your run of the mill sporting equipment, they have really great prices on workout clothes and i always seem to go when they’re having a sale. sure — the checkout line is a little sluggish, but what else is new in the bk? it shares a parking lot with the pc richards next door, which is an added bonus for all of y’all with cars. overall i give modell’s the thumb’s up.

It’s a sporting goods store. They have sporting goods. You give them money. You get to take sporting goods home.
Never had a problem here, except for slow checkout lines.

Clean, convenient, and they pulled out all the customer service strings today when I went to get a pair of bottoms. I was approached by a lady who came to check on my periodically as I waited for two Russian girls to finish in the fitting room. Another employee approached as I was checking out the tennis rackets. Cashier was also extra friendly.
Good Shopping Experience.

Ok. So I’ve been here a total of 5 times during my 1 year stay down the street. They’ve always had what I needed at reasonable (and expected) prices. You probably won’t get a great deal here. B&M stores just can’t compete with the interwebs-​based stores anymore. The customer service has always been a little «hands off,» but I prefer it. If I was to rate this store on my previous 4 visits, I’d give it a good, solid 3. Clean, convenient, don’t try to rip you off, but nothing spectacular.
However, I came in today and bought about a dozen soccer balls. I’m going to South Africa and wanted to buy some gifts for the kids over there. I made a passing comment to the manager that night (his name was «Jay», I believe) that I was going to South Africa and buying the balls for kids there. He gave me a discount. Let’s be real, I was going to buy those balls either way, but the fact that he helped me out a little gives me serious confidence in their management. I’ll be going back for future sporting good needs even without the discount. Thanks, Jay.

I wish there was a way to write a review about a particular product at a store, because if so I would give my adidas ClimaCool track pants (size: Medium, in case you’re shopping for me) 8.5 awesome stars for being the perfect piece of clothing. It’s awesome mesh lining protects me against the whipping New York winter winds and the comfortable outer shell doesn’t stick to my faux-​leather couches.
I want to wear them all the time, especially on first dates … if you can’t appreciate me in my natural habitat, what hope do we have for the future when you find out one of my favorite movies is Eurotrip?
But, alas, I can’t review clothing, only stores, and this isn’t the world’s best Modell’s. It’s not built for playing sports, unless you expect that you’re going to follow Eli Manning onto the field and need all the random football equipment that no one in Brooklyn needs.
They have a modicum of equipment for other sports (including one row of soccer equipment highlighted by pink shinguards — yes, all soccer players are 8-​year-​old girls, I get it, we’re a stereotype) but mostly it’s oversized sweatsuits that I would never wear.
If that’s what you’re looking for, go right ahead. But if you need real sporting equipment, you’re going to have more luck at a place like Paragon (despite it being insanely overpriced).
