«Expect the Unexpected» — this probably applies to many places in NYC that are hidden treasures, truly. The ones that not discovered by many, but are neighborhood gems that make us fall in love with the city all over again. One of those treasures in Narrows Botanical Garden. It’s a tiny stretch of green between busy Belt and lazy Shore Road, transformed into oasis by volunteers. It’s a quiet place to spend a sunny afternoon at, watch the birds and butterflies(and turtles!!). Shimmering waters of the Bay and Verrazano can be seen in a distance, benches are clean and grass is lovely. Stroll around to see the native plants, or enjoy watching bees and butterfly houses, the quiet simplicity of zen garden or murmur of alpine mini-fountains… This is a sanctuary. For us, for plants, for local wild life — a beautiful retreat for everyone. Keep it safe and enjoy it.

Nice small garden in Bay Ridge. Nothing like Brooklyn Botanical Garden or New York Botanical of course but it is still a cute place to sit read a book or lay out in the sun. You can see the water from there and it is attached to Shore Road park. You can also walk to the Beltway promenade and to the American Veterans Memorial pier. They have different gardens throughout my favorites are the Japanese rock garden and the succulent garden.

This little section of Shore Road Park is surprisingly lovely. No, it’s not a high-budget botanical garden; it’s maintained by volunteers. But it’s got a ton of roses, and different areas highlighting different types of flora — one devoted to succulents, an Asian garden, a area devoted to native plants, etc. Best of all, it’s free — a lovely place for an afternoon outing. They also do educational programs for children, and have events throughout the summer — movie nights, etc. I’ll be adding a couple of those to my calendar!
