This place is an oasis of positivity. I was introduced to Spoke the Hub by a friend(who was in Scott Kettner’s Maracatu class) when we went to the 2002 end-of-year concert, and it might sound odd but that concert was restorative for me… one after another music and dance group shared what they’d learned with the audience made up of their friends and family. No one was too cool to enjoy the mostly amateur performances. It felt like a village where everyone knows each other — I forgot I was in NYC! Since then, I’ve taken African drumming at the Gowanus location and ballroom dancing on Union Street. The classes I took with Gabriella Dennery(drumming) and Laurie Shayler(dance) were outstanding — they are excellent and patient instructors with great attitudes. With both, I was able to lose myself to learning and enjoying. If I lived closer I would be there all the time. It’s really out of the way for me, and I fantasize about moving to that neighborhood… being there has been that good for my soul.

I never liked exercise classes because I was not good at following the steps and the teachers always seemed to focus on what I did wrong. Spoke’s Beginning to Exercise class for adults, given by Spoke founder Elise Long, changed all that. This is a fun class that starts at a do-able level for people who are not dancers or in terrific shape, and really gets your body — and mind — moving. Elise introduces many different ways of exercising, from salsa and folk dance to weights to Pilates, always with a terrific soundtrack and a smile. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up, but it doesn’t matter if you are doing everything right & you end up with a balanced workout.
