The Sofia Inn

We’ve stayed here twice in the Garden Room. It is walking distance to three subway stations and close to beautiful Prospect Park. Billy and Celeste are hospitable and took great care of us during our stays. We will stay again if the opportunity arises.

Very cute little place, conveniently located to the subway, a nice park, great local bars, and market. We stayed in 2 rooms during our stay (inn keeper Billy was super accommodating to our last minute check-​in needs, booking us in the separate rooms to help us find a 2 night stay)—
1) the East Room: so awesome! New air conditioning unit, bay window, dope hardwood spacious area. Shared bathroom on the floor was no problem, was in fact, really nice (my only regret was that the amazing looking tub was not really something I could use as a considerate hall-​bathroom-​sharer). Totally recommend.
2) South Room: not as fancy, by a lot, *but* was cozy and had a functional kitchen (the east room only had a mini fridge) and a spare single bed. Great if you have more people or want to cook (and is 5 min. from a great market, so that’s reasonable).
Like other reviewers said, it is a creaky quiet house, so not for parties. Is much like staying in your friend’s really nice old Victorian, would be nice if there’d been a lobby or central area. But all in all, very glad we were able to stay here.

I’ve stayed here several times over the past few years. Great accommodations, clean, great neighborhood. Quick walk to subway.

First if all, there’s NO BREAKFAST in this B&B. It’s not a place to go and relax. The owner’s attitude is constantly stressed and tense. Minutes after arriving in NYC, planning on where to go for dinner, we receive a call from him asking us to get to The Sofia because he had to leave. A fun night ended up being a drag. Next day (not the check out day) he wanted us to pay in cash the remainder of the bill, again, because he had to leave. I don’t have that kind of cash on me, I say, he answers something like «of course you don’t have that kind of money». This man shouldn’t be dealing with human beings. I don’t know who the people that gave this place five stars are, maybe his family.

This was great, a true Brooklyn experience. Reviewers who didn’t like it seemed to complain about payment options and invent stories about critters that don’t exist. You are terrible people, the scourge of the earth.
I had a very relaxing time in a great neighborhood and was able to book very last minute at a very competitive rate.

This place is ok if you wanna get an overpriced bed and breakfast for 1 person and ONE PERSON ONLY in Brooklyn. The area is very good and nice when I went into Manhattan for the first time and didn’t know which subway to get back everyone new the park that this place is right next too. That all being said lets get into how the experience was inside and not out. First of all the bathroom for the 150 $ a night was in the hallway medium sized ok bathroom did I mention that it was infested by roaches yes it really was, it was not a pleasant experience to have to take a shower while roaches are crawling around in pairs. Another thing about the bathroom in the morning when everyone has to go to the bathroom and you have to wait in a line or have people knock on the door while your trying to go in the morning it’s also not very fun. Enough about that let’s talk about the room I said one person cause for the 150 $ a night it only has one bed so if your looking for something in that price range for 2 people this is a horrible option. The tv in the room looked as old as dirt and was so thick and heavy I couldn’t even move it! The bed was ok like most hotels but the maids or whoever cleans this place doesn’t seem to do a good job cause I found hair under the sheets. to top it all of the room was very small and the other person I was with hated it because they had to sleep on an air mattress and they said that they woke up with a horrible pain in their back from it. So in the end I hated this bed and breakfast I will never come back this is basically a bed and breakfast without the breakfast or the bed!

great room, great location. our lodging had private bath, deck, kitchen, bed, couch, day bed, etc. great location, close to subway, flea markets, park slope restaurants. our high recommendation.

I loved staying here. The host went out of his way to help me when I was trying to find a room at the last minute. The room and bathroom were clean, comfortable and quiet. I will stay here again. It is very close to two subway stops and many good restaurants, a wine store and a grocery store, the Brooklyn Museum and Botanical Gardens, etc. I much prefer staying in a homey place to a sterile, expensive hotel.

The Sofia Inn far exceeded my expectations for the incredible price. If you’re looking for a 5 star hotel experience with Stearns & Foster mattresses, this is not the place for you. But if you’re looking for a true «living in NY» feel, this is perfect. I was in the Garden Suite, which is under the stairs. There are two bedrooms, a huge kitchen, a bathroom, and a living room. Everything is adorably decorated and you feel as though you you’re home. There were even groceries in the cupboard! I used to live in the Upper West Side and then moved out of NY — staying here is like having that hip apartment I always wanted but couldn’t afford! You’re half a block from a bunch of restaurants and cafes and can just hop on the ²⁄₃ at Grand Army Plaza to get to Manhattan. Also within walking distance is beautiful Prospect Park. Billy, the owner, and Celeste, who takes care of the rooms, are great. Very helpful and friendly. I’ll be back!

This place was a great little retreat in Brooklyn. We were headed to Brooklyn for the weekend for my cousin’s wedding (he was getting married at the Picnic House at Prospect Park) so this was a great close-​by, affordable option for us. The street (and surrounding neighborhood) was beautiful.
We stayed in the North Room on the top floor. We shared a bathroom with the South Room. which I thought I’d have a problem with at first, but it really was totally fine. Super clean. The house has great little old features that are super charming. Also, as ‘creaky’ as it can get, the house and visitors were all super quiet, which was all very nice. The rooms are equipped with microwaves, little fridges, and a TV (cute lil thing). You will also have access to free WiFi while there.
I got a glimpse of the South Room and the décor and color scheme were pretty and relaxing. I wasn’t a fan of our room. a bit too dark so it made it feel a bit creepy.
Overall, I thought the place was still good and clean and at that price, I definitely would stay again and see if I could snag a different, brighter room.

More like staying with a friend of a friend than at true B&B, the Sofia Inn offers the experience of staying among locals in NYC without losing any of the conveniences of staying at a hotel. Kind of.
Our room shared a bathroom with another room so there’s that, but it was never an issue. No lines, no strange smells, no messes. Eveyone was in and out and cleaned up after themselves.
The inn is in the middle of a quiet block, but is a short walk to cafes, restaurants, bars, and grocery stores so anything you might need is a few minutes walk away. Multiple subway lines also have stops within a five minute walk and you can in lower Manhattan with fifteen minutes.
The inn keeper and staff were nice but maybe a little distracted or disorganized. I’d suggest that you make every request clear, keep the emails, and make sure you are clear about every detail of your stay. We had a hour long detour from lower Manhattan over exchanging keys which could have been avoided upon check-​in. Again, they are very friendly but take it upon yourself to make sure your stay is as smooth as possible.
The Sofia Inn is a wonderful place to stay and you’ll consider yourself lucky to have found it when you step out of the front door on your first morning.
My wife and I were smiling everyday as we debated whether or not we were in the Cosby’s neighborhood or Big Bird’s!

I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a reasonably priced place to stay in NYC. The location is amazing, as long as you don’t mind taking the subway into Manhattan, which is what my boyfriend and I did. Its right in the middle of a quaint Brooklyn brownstone lined street, and you would never know it was an Inn by the outside.
We stayed in the Parlor Suite, so we had our own bathroom, we also had our own kitchen, which we didn’t take advantage of, but i think if a family stayed in this room, or a group of friends, that could really be a useful thing. There was also a private outside deck that led into the garden which was beautiful. The décor was so tastefully done, very classic, but cozy, and it was such a spacious room!
I gave it –1 star because of a few minor details. Since its in a converted brownstone building, the walls aren’t too thick, and the first night we were there, there were about four of us hanging out and we got a knock on the door that we were being a bit too loud. Maybe we were that, just a «bit» too loud, but if it was in a hotel I doubt it would’ve been a problem. Also, there isn’t any maid service, which wasn’t a big deal seeing as how its an Inn, not a hotel, BUT they do put out an envelope asking you to tip the housekeeping, which I found a bit off-​putting since there isn’t any, until the guest leaves. I usually do tip anyways (this trip included), but that’s at hotels, where the maid service comes and tidies up while we are away.
Overall, a great room, great price, great location. I would definitely try and stay here again on another visit.
