CONS: It’s always such a pain to figure out how to get to Industrial Lane. Hello, GPS!
THE FULL STORY: I’ve had a few trucks over the years, and I just bought another… a used 2013 Ford F-​150, longbed (i.e., 8′ box). One of the wheel tubs (the box side of the wheel well) had been pretty significantly dented and scraped. I figure someone had dropped a fridge or an oven on it… something big and heavy and with a squared-​off edge like that. The truck came with a tailgate step and handle, and it has plastic rail caps.
I spent an ungodly amount of time researching the crap out of spray-​in bed liners. Rhino vs. Line-​X. Line-​X vs. Rhino. Round and round. I ended up basing my decision on a comment I read on an online truck forum that said something to the effect of: They are both excellent products. Base your decision on how well the shop performs the work. Specifically, the prep work (especially scuffing every square millimeter of paint) must be meticulous.
I decided to go with Rhino Linings of Flatirons for a few reasons:
* They’re close to home… easier for me to get a lift while the work was being done.
* They were recommended by AeroSuds (without my even asking who I should go with).
* The price was reasonable (though a few dollars more for my truck’s 8′ bed)
* The work could be done the next day, which fit with my schedule
The shop opens for business at 6:00 a.m., and I was there promptly at that time. The entire place is clean and orderly, which is what you should expect from an auto shop that is run professionally. There’s a waiting area with truck accessories, including displays for tonneau covers and truck bed tool boxes, and I spent some time leafing through a catalog while Jerry was spraying in the liner.
Here’s what matters most: Jerry has installed literally thousands of bed liners, and it shows. He could do it in his sleep. The result was a VERY efficient process — about four hours from start to finish — and resulted in the liner being 100% perfect. No overspray, razor-​sharp lines where the liner ends, even coverage… no lumps, no drips, no errors.
Beyond the call of duty: There were two things I didn’t expect: First, one of the bolts that anchors the box to the frame of my truck had rusted, most likely due to a chemical spill that had stripped the galvanized coating from it. That one rusty bolt and washer was a lot like «the pimple on the king’s chin» — a small blemish that commanded all of your attention. Well, as it happened, Jerry had one extra bed anchor bolt lying around. (To be clear, nothing «lies around» that shop… it was in a small bin on a shelf.) He offered it as a replacement for the rusted bolt, and he didn’t charge me for it. I’m not saying anyone should expect that kind of generosity (I didn’t and don’t), but it sure was a nice and much-​appreciated touch. And the second thing is that Jerry is a damn miracle worker with a hammer. Remember the dents in the wheel tub? Well, he pounded both of them out… with a carpenter’s hammer, no less. Had I known that he would have been able to do that, I would have recorded it to video. Once the liner was sprayed in, you couldn’t tell that the dents had ever been there… AT ALL. Again, no charge for the body work.
This has been a pretty long review, and I appreciate you reading (if you made it this far). I just felt that I received more than my money’s worth from Rhino Linings of Flatirons, so I wanted to acknowledge it here.
