OK, Buffalo is full of family-owned, Mom & Pop businesses like Darren’s Tavern. I visited Darren’s last Sunday with a friend and a local who showed us around town. We met the proprietress Renata, who is a lovely lady and we spent some time chatting with her. Darren’s a local watering hole and casual spot. The building itself has been around for over 100 years and has been a restaurant and bar for pretty much that length of time. Local patrons continue to come here to unwind and relax. All beers sold are in bottles, nothing in draft. There’s a lot of vintage fixtures from the 40s like old lights, old beer signs and a private telephone booth which I think still works. Darren’s Tavern is neither trendy or hip but it’s a place where taverns once held an important position in the local community. They provided more than just alcohol, but they were the community hub to many. Darren’s Tavern is part of a dying breed of Buffalo’s industrial history, and luckily, there’s a few locals who are adamant about preserving it.
