I have been wanting to try Deep South Taco, but I also wanted to give it a chance to let the crowds die down, as well as giving it a chance for them to get on their feet and get the kinks worked out. So we were down in the area on a Sunday afternoon, and of course Lee loves tacos and Southwestern type food in general, so we went in here for a late lunch. It’s very colorful, with a great looking patio that will make this place a magnet in the summertime. They have a large TV outside for sports or other event watching. We were quickly seated. There’s not a ton of seating on the inside, although perhaps we weren’t seeing the whole area. They have a decent beer selection, mostly of non-local micros. We took at look at the menu and decided to get some nachos and one taco each. Oh man. The nachos were huuuuge! for $ 11, there was a gigantic pile of chips, steak, queso, black beans and salsa. We both immediately regretted ordering tacos after getting this, but we tackled them anyway. I got an al pastor pork taco, and Lee got a carnitas taco, with the upgrade to the guac and flour tortilla. I really enjoyed the flavor of the al pastor, with nicely seasoned bits of pineapple and pork cubes. My only complaint is that it was a little bit overfull, so a tiny bit hard to eat. Lee enjoyed his carnitas taco, which was the same steak that was on the nachos. Overall, I thought this was a great place, although a bit noisy. Buffalo is large enough to support plenty of taco purveyors. You don’t have to feel like you’re betraying your love of Lloyd if you go in here. La Divinia isn’t going to be sad. Go and enjoy, guilt free.

Micheladas, nachos, tacos yes please! I came here for tacos and drinks with friends and loved every minute of it! For starters we had the stake nachos, they come out in a large baking sheet and are big enough to share with 2 – 4 people. With the nachos I enjoyed some micheladas, that’s a typical Mexican drink that mixes beer with tequila and sometimes hot sauce. Maybe if like Bloody Mary’s you’ll enjoy the hot version. For me, it was too much. After the nachos I had one taco al pastor. It was delicious! Over stuffed meat in a corn tortilla with a kick. I can’t wait to go back and have 3 more!

Going here as a vegetarian, I wasn’t expecting many meatless options to begin with. There were two veggie options on the menu, but one was out, so I chose the remaining one. It was literally a big bowl of Fritos with some spices, a little bit of refried beans and cheese on top. It was pretty salty but had an okay taste. I would give it another chance, to try the other vegetarian option; but I’m not expecting a lot. The meat-eaters I went with seemed to enjoy all of their food though!

I came yesterday around late evening around 8 with my sister and it was pretty packed. It’s pretty small inside but looks really nice. We had to wait at the bar for a few minutes and we got seated in a roomy booth. Our waitress was really nice and gave us water. I ordered taco al pastor and taco de costilla de res and both were really good. We also ordered the churros with chocolate sauce which was amazing! The tacos are pretty cheap around $ 4 – 5 but the churros($ 6) are oddly more expensive than the tacos. You’ll have to ask for more napkins because the tacos will drip. lol I would definitely come back!

Disappointing, I came here for Sunday Funday with my friends. Between Unilocal and Facebook I’ve heard a variety of ups and downs but trying to remain true to my Unilocal roots I came in with an open mind. Walking in, I’m trying to not make any other comparisons to the other unnamed taco factory in the area. However they appear very similar in appearance and the décor of this location appears to be a bit rushed. We slide up to the bar, a fair size u-shape made of concrete there is an odd arrangement along the side near the door where the staff also walks through. So although we got deep enough to avoid them, the gentleman sitting next to be was kinda a kink in that pipeline. We did however sit for maybe 10 mins before the bartender acknowledged us, this same bartender wanted us to close our tab at the end of shift although we weren’t done yet. We started with a pitcher of the house margaritas, really nothing special, not sure if they make the mix or if it’s a prepackaged mix. Later i had the fruity mojito which was very good. Our meal was a split order of nachos, its big, a small sheet tray full however I’m surprised by how little meat you get for your order. We selected pork but that shouldn’t make the difference. In my opinion we paid mostly for the chips. This area has to be great in the summer, it has a huge patio and outside bar. I’ll give them another shot and will hopefully have a better experience.

The environment is fun & inviting but definitely more of a bar atmosphere. I recommend coming early to get a table. The queso, guacamole and chips are amazing-I would go back for these and a one of their signature drinks. The tacos are a hit or miss– they are tiny, shells fall apart and the seasoning is definitely a different flavor(still can’t find the exact word for it) I can’t wait to go back in the summer time for the outdoor patio!

My fiancé and I were excited to check out Deep South Taco. We received a gift card for Christmas, and were excited to use it! We arrived on an icy, icy cold winter Friday night. The place was very busy and compact due to the lack of outdoor seating that time of year. We waited a brief 5 – 10 minutes for a table, a nice start. A start to any Mexican meal must include chips. We debated the salsas vs guac vs the more adventurous queso. Eventually, guac sounded the best to us. The salsas all sounded very good, but we were afraid that despite the strong flavors and names, that they might end up blending together in taste. The guac was a good choice. It came out very quickly, and was overall a great meal started. It tasted fresh and definitely homemade. After the chips, we each ordered 3 tacos each. The waitress said typically 2 – 3 per person is a good sized meal, and I agree. By the end of the 3rd, we were quite full. 2 would definitely satisfy most people, butt 3 is nice if you’re either extra hungry, or want to try some different options, like we did. Between the 3 I ordered for myself(and had a few bites of my fiancé’s), I really liked the Carne Asada(Taco de Carne Asada) and the Pork Belly(Taco de Panza) tacos. I also had the chicken(Taco de Pollo Pibil) which was probably my least favorite as it was the most underwhelming. It wasn’t bad, but definitely the least flavorful in my opinion. But overall, none of them were bad. Some were spicier than others, but they were appropriately filled, and the shells were homemade. The shells were a bit on the thicker side, but I enjoyed them. The drinks were pretty good as well. Reasonable priced for what you get. I felt the drinks were very weak, whereas a friend who went on another night said her party could barely finish a pitcher of margaritas because they were so strong. Seems a bit inconsistent. I tried a Burra de Fresa, a Get The Stretch Margarita, and a house DST-Rita. All were good. I enjoyed the jalapeño of the Get The Stretch, as well as the DST-Rita. The DST-Rita definitely delivers on the fresh squeezed fruit part, because they tasted fruity and fresh. Overall, all 3 were delicious, just a tad on the weak side for me. We definitely want to come back! There are lots of things on the menu that I would like to try. This place is definitely a cool addition to the downtown dining scene; I can’t wait to check out the patio this summer!

Came here on a Saturday night with a group of 4 of us! It was busy but we were able to immediately get a table. Our server was prompt and friendly, and was able to give us some suggestions regarding the food. We ordered the nachos with chicken and they were delicious! It was a massive portion, but we polished off the entire thing between the four of us. Definitely would recommend it as an app for a group. We all ordered 2 – 3 tacos each. the favorites were the crispy tilapia(it was veryyyy tasty!) and the carne steak taco(my husband actually ordered a second because the first was so good). The only one that we weren’t crazy about was the veggie taco with portobello and goat cheese(the portobellos were extremely rich, so maybe less marinating might help??). The churros were amazing as well(they came with warm chocolate sauce). Only a couple of hiccups during our trip. First, it took a good 15 minutes for our drinks to be delivered to us after we had ordered them(even our appetizer came out before our drinks had arrived). Secondly, the garage-like door was opened in the middle of our dinner for some unknown reason. I like this feature because it opens the space up, but that night it was like 35 degrees out and it was immediately freezing. Overall we did have a good experience and will be back! I thought the tacos were reasonably priced and the drinks were good too.

So much goodness in one place. Went on a Friday night and had about a twenty minute wait for a table. That’s just an excuse to visit the bar. My wife and I both had a couple of the DST Margs on the rocks. Simple, delicious, and not watered down. We were able to peruse the menu during of brief wait. I was impressed by the size of the menu. DST offers enough choices without burdening the kitchen with too many dishes to master. We started with the homemade chips and guac. Holy smokes — I’d say that they were the best tortilla chips I’ve ever had. There was a light seasoning on them that added a little kick. Couple that with the guac which was fantastic(rivals if not beats my wife’s, but keep that on the DL, please!) We ordered 4 tacos: the fish(both fried and regular), the carnita, and the Panza which was pork belly. All of these were terrific with my favorite being the Panza. They were about 6 inches each on a delicious soft tortilla. The fillings were generous which I find to be a common issue as other places tend to skimp on this. I am excited to go back and try the other options on the menu. Additionally, in the warmer months, I imagine that the outdoor section will be great with the big screen projection on the wall. Another note which goes to the level of care, we were sat next to the kitchen window. Busy chefs preparing the food and another organizing and expediting my orders. I noticed an attention to detail by them, making sure that the edges of the plate were clean which makes for a better presentation. I’m not picky about that, but it speaks to the quality of the product and the care put in by the staff. Our server(Morgan) was also extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Worth trying if you’re craving tacos and a great restaurant! An easy five stars!

Seriously don’t waste your time, or money for that matter unless you plan on just going for drinks. Came on the first day of opening and it truly was not that busy. Owners were there and didn’t bother to come up to anyone and say hello or ask how their meals were… pretty disappointing and rude in my opinion. Waitress was very nice and helpful. this place is pretty pricey, 5 bucks a taco?! PFFT! give me a break, the quality of these tacos are nowhere near worth the 5 bucks, id rather flush my money down the toilet. Queso was hard, I was told to «eat it fast because it will harden quickly.» what kinda crap-ola is that?! so i have to eat that before anything and can’t go back to it in the middle of my meal to enjoy? Thinking they should maybe change the idea of that«Queso». my friend hated this place more than i did. overall we ordered a lot of stuff, two tacos each, salsa(no that is not free!), queso and two drinks. My margarita was pretty good and i did enjoy it, my friend ordered a fruity drink and she did not like it at all. The tacos are far too small, I do remember a fish taco that was not very enjoyable, the others were so-so. the tortilla shells here are pretty odd/different, they are fluffy and thick. Salas were okay but i thought it was weird they put your ships in a bag… my order wasn’t to go but thanks.

I have been looking for authentic Mexican in the area and I haven’t found it yet. Being from the South, I don’t really expect to find authentic Mexican in a place where you don’t find Mexican people, but I can’t help but chase that high. Don’t get me wrong-they have delicious food-it’s just not authentic Mexican. It’s the type of food created by a a chef(or cook) that is technical and precise and probably learned in a test kitchen somewhere. Authentic Mexican food is prepared by somebody’s Grandma or someone that at least has an Abuela who may get a little heavy handed with the chili powder from time to time, or may slightly burn her tortilla because she was cooking enough food to feed a small army; but it’s still all good. I also expected them to have a more robust menu as many Mexican restaurants do, they theirs is relatively simple, with the taco being the star of the show. If anyone knows where I can get a good torta in this town, please let me know. I had the nachos, which is served as a HUGE portion that would satisfy 4 people if they aren’t being greedy. However; I’m an American and gluttony is my specialty! With that being said, I ate 2⁄3 of it myself. My wife got in on the action though, and she took down the other 1⁄3 like a matador with a chip on her shoulder. In true American fashion, she also ordered a taco and a Bloody Mary. The taco was fresh and the shell appeared to have been made in-house. The ingredients were also fresh, though the pork was slightly overcooked and a little tough. No salsa suggestion was made, but I think that would have taken the taco up a notch. The wife only ate half of it and wasn’t impressed, so in true American fashion, I jumped on the other half of that taco like cheap mattress. The Bloody Mary had just the right amount of spice(we told the server that we wanted it spicy) and it was delicious. I could have stood for another shot of vodka in it, but it wasn’t mine to doctor up. The service was very good; granted it was 4pm, and the crowd had not arrived yet. The staff was very attentive and friendly. Several employees greeted us in passing, including a few cooks and a dressed-up guy that appeared to be a Manager or something. Overall, I don’t have to return, but if someone asked me to go, I would. That’s my verdict.

Ate here for the 1st time with my coworker last week. We got one taco a piece bc we where just trying out and wasn’t sure how we’d like it. It took a little bit to receive our tacos. Once I dug in at work I was well-pleased with the taste and quality of the meat.(I got Taco de Carne Asada, steak taco) I was a little disappointed in the tortilla shell. I was a bit soggy. I’m happy with the traditional ETS-style hard shell taco. It was a bit pricey for 1 taco. I guess you’re paying for the quality of the meat. Which again was very good. Overall I loved the experience. It was very nice inside. I’d like to go again to try that amazing nacho dish I keep seeing other Unilocalers rave about :)

I eat fish tacos at least twice a week in LA. Unfortunately, Buffalo has a dearth of genuine Mexican restaurants. Thankfully, this loud, colorful, new gringo-centric wonder serves gourmet tacos and they nailed it. I visited three times over a few days with different companions and the over-the-top cantina décor is as good as anything found in Austin, Texas.

Ventured into Deep South Taco recently and really enjoyed it. Here’s why: The place. It’s awesome. The outside bar/patio/whatever you call it is amazing. It’s going to be fantastic in the summer. There’s a huge screen outside and a roof top patio as well. I think there’s more outdoor space than restaurant. The service. Our waitress was really nice and explained everything. She came to our table often always asking what else she can do. The drinks. I got the white sangria. It was really good. I downed it. I will be back and try more. The food. We got a bunch of different things. Started off with the huge plate of nachos. The queso was a little thick and the jalapeños were raw which is why I deducted a star. I prefer pickled jalapeños. Better flavor and doesn’t ruin your entire meal. The chicken and beans and queso fresco on the delicious chips were great. We also ordered the chips and salsa. Chips should be at the table when you walk in no matter what at every Mexican restaurant, in my opinion. But whatever. The chips come in a cute little bag and are seasoned. The seasoning was so good. You get three salsas that you choose from a list of about 8 – 10. The green tomatillo was my favorite. The charred tomato one was okay. Definitely charred. And I can’t remember the other. Take the chips home with you if you don’t finish them. They are perfect the following day. We also ordered two tacos– taco al pastor. I love the shells. Fresh and soft and I love the taste of cornmeal. They are street tacos so a little smaller. You need more than 1 if you were only eating those. It was good. The pork was a little dry and tough but it was good. I could’ve ate just the shell. We also ordered the churros. No matter how full you are you have to get them. Hot, fresh, and cinnamony with a delicious chocolate dipping sauce. I thought I was way too full but I ate them! Overall it was good. I want to go back soon and try the fish taco and have more of those chips!

This is going to be my preliminary review, as I went here during their second weekend open and it was incredibly busy. I have now read some of the other reviews and agree with some other reviewers, this place has significant potential. Deep South Taco is definitely going for the super modern urban-chic Mexican theme, neon blue and red lights included. This is the kind of restaurant that is definitely trying to capture the Millenial generation. While I was hoping the inside would be larger, as the bar takes up much of the space as you enter, this place is going to be awesome during the summer, as they have an enormous patio. The bar is awkwardly close to the entrance so when you walk in during peak times the bar patrons, coupled with two long dinner tables on your other side, cause for a congested welcome to the restaurant. I met a couple friends here and managed to snag some seats at the bar, thankfully not right near the entrance. The drinks: The margarita’s are fairly priced and come from a tap! Yes I said it, margs on tap! Pretty awesome. The food: We ordered the nachos after hearing rave reviews from multiple friends and unfortunately were disappointed. Our nachos, while large, lacked enough toppings to make it worthwhile. There were about 6 measly pieces of chicken and not enough«tequila-infused» queso. Other patrons near us ordered the nachos and they looked more plentiful so I would assume we must have just gotten a bad batch. I would go back to give them another chance! Overall: I gave Deep South Taco a 3⁄5 rating in hopes that they make some changes come summertime given how much potential this place has. First of all, not a fan of the cash-only policy. In this apple pay day and age, a restaurant trying to appeal to Millenials should definitely not be cash-only. The group I was with was discouraged to keep buying drinks knowing we all would eventually need to run to the ATM. I also am encouraged that the nachos will be as good as everyone has said they are next time, so cheers for that. The bartenders were friendly and our food/drinks were served promptly, so this is definitely somewhere I will try again.

I’ve been here three times for lunch. I know, that’s a lot since they have been open for 2 weeks. But I have to be downtown everyday and people want to try it out. I gave them the benefit of the doubt for my first review. But this is a solid three stars as it stands now. Pros: Location. It’s a good one. Venue itself: it’s going to be awesome when the outside is open and the weather cooperative. That space is terrific. Hostess: she’s organized, seats you efficiently and is pleasant if you find yourself waiting a few minutes. Size of nacho platter is good for two. Chicken and pulled pork tacos are great. Cons: why no chips and salsa while you wait? You have to pay for them and it’s costly. The guac seems overpriced for what you get. It’s good but it’s not caviar. The nachos platter is HUGE but the meat portion small and in fact all the toppings are a little skimpy given all the chips. And there’s ALOT of cheese. Cash only — seems to be an issue. I get it, especially after one lunch with 4 people and a bill over $ 40(water only). The host wanted to use credit. Not everyone uses ATMs. Servers — mean well but seem untrained. We sat without silverware at our table. By the time we were able to flag someone down food was cold. Food seems to be served more lukewarm than hot on occasion. That didn’t help the cheese on the nachos. The unknown: Parking — lunch time hasn’t been an issue. Not sure how evenings will be. The drinks — bar is always active and looks like a lot of fun. Drink menu looks like a lot of fun too. But I haven’t tried any yet. The owner /managers are there and visible. That’s great. I think they will work out the tweaks and then I’ll go back to a solid 4 maybe 5 stars. But I’d consider a few things: Chips and salsa on table. Take credit, your target market seems to be under 35, they love Debit, Square, Venmo etc. make it easy for the customer. Have each server make sure there is silverware on the table, and have them carry some in their aprons for ease and speed. I’ll be back, I like the chicken taco, but I’ll be looking for some adjustments.

I love me a good taco. That’s for damn sure. And this place can deliver just that! I heard DST was opening about a week prior to opening day, so I immediately put it on my radar. Fast forward, the hubs and I were downtown at Canalside for a meeting when he suggested 716 for lunch… I was reminded of DST and told him we were going, no questions asked. First…the signage and welcoming atmosphere when you pull up is pretty rad. I love the colors, the outdoor seating area, the outdoor bar… and even the giant movie screen(which will most likely not get much use til spring! lol) But I can’t wait. I’m always looking for a chill place to hang out outdoors, and coupled with my love for the taco, this place is going to be a new go-to for happy hour(s). I wasn’t sure at first if it would be a sit down type of restaurant or a counter service type of place because I hadn’t really heard much about it prior to opening other than it was a new taco place… but I was happy to be greeted by a hostess who took us to a quaint little booth up off to the right of the restaurant. We ordered everything that looked good to us at the moment… Mexican Street Corn(oh man!), Queso with chorizo, chips, and a side of guac, pork tacos, chicken tacos, carne asada tacos! oh my! and even a specialty taco served in a bowl with fritos«The walking taco» i think was its name? We finished off the meal with an order of Churros – good lord. They weren’t on the menu… so thankfully our server suggested them… most definitely recommend! In fact, I could skip the rest and just eat the churros for lunch.(probably should have as I felt like i needed to be rolled out of the restaurant when we were done!) The service was on point! Loved our server – Kristen, maybe, was her name? Super knowledgeable about the menu, which was impressive since they had only been open about four days. We will be back, I am certain of this…

Three days later and I am still fantasizing about our food at Deep South Taco. We started with chips and salsa — you can choose three different salsas and we enjoyed them all. The chips themselves were delicious and well-seasoned. They could really stand on their own without the salsa! I then went with a steak taco. $ 5 was a little hefty for the size but the quality was outstanding. I inhaled it in probably one minute. The steak was tender and the flavors were perfect. I loved the tortilla which was really more like corn meal. It was delicious, even though it fell apart while eating. I did not mind in the least. In fact, the tortilla was so good that I wanted to try another taco! The waitress was not at all put-out by my request and in a few minutes another taco appeared. This time I went with pork which was good but not nearly as good as the steak. The icing on the cake was the churros we had for dessert. We expected a small dish but these were big churros, approximately 5 – 6 in the bowl. Completely covered in brown sugar and cinnamon, perfectly crispy on the outside but soft and warm on the inside. They just melted in my mouth. I have no regrets about devouring 4 of these! Overall, service was excellent, particularly our waitress. One point of contention: they were SO quick to remove our food. Even if we still had some left on our plates, they were there asking to take it away. We felt a bit rushed at times. Calm down, folks! Also, we were less than impressed by the bar. The drinks were weak, watery and just lacked flavor(I tried a margarita, dark and stormy, and mojito — none of which were good). The bar service was also lacking. If the food wasn’t so darn good I would have given 3 stars based on the mediocre bar experience.

Preliminary review: I’m rounding up since the place just opened up and it was slammed, but I can see the potential of this being a nice chic, Mexican joint downtown. It’s an ambitious project with a huge patio space and room for 100+ patrons inside. I tried two tacos — the pork belly and the pulled pork. Did not enjoy the pork belly, but absolutely loved the pulled pork. Love the shells as well — I’m not sure if they hand make them, but they taste delightful. Some nice sauces on the table to add some flavors as well. Service was chaotic, but friendly. Can’t blame them on the first day of service. Looking forward to coming back, trying more tacos and their huge nacho platter as well.
