It’s A Mod Mod World was a staple of the East Village of New York City for over a decade(featured in NY Times, NY Magazine, Timeout NY and on CNN, Food Network, and MTV) – so it’s SUPER exciting that artist/owner Rick Smith is here in Buffalo and bringing all the same kitschy wonderfulness to an Allen Street boutique. Smith’s work is wild, irreverent, and colorful – and so is his store. From floor to ceiling there are hand-made lamps, vintage dishes and purses, funky lanterns, pop-art switch-plate covers, funky onsies for the baby, jewelry, and assorted novelties. The list is unending. It’s really a spectacle. And speaking of spectacles, Smith is well-known for his wildly inventive window dressing, so make sure to check them out as you walk in!

Recently attended a Unilocal event at The Rooster and it was fabulous. The baked goods were incredible… especially the sea salt cookies. This shop is chock full of interesting gifts. You will love the conversation piece lamps! There is something for everyone here and prices are reasonable. You won’t leave empty handed! And they do take special orders for lamps if you have something special you want incorporated into the design. Love it!

Was visiting a gallery next door when I saw a sign for… yep, CUPCAKES Had to stop in to see my options on that front, of course. Seeing as my current mission is to find the best cupcake in Buffalo in a perfect location(for me anyway), I must try all cupcakes I come across. I don’t really know how to describe this store actually. It sells dessert, it sells Monkey Bread, it sells jewelry, and other things. Very eclectic options here I have to say. All very colorful as well. But, I was looking for cupcakes. So off to the dessert counter I go, where, sadly I see no cupcakes. The woman behind the counter, I believe the actual baker of all things on offer, does say, sorry, no cupcakes today. OK, fair enough. I can flex. I pick up a gluten free brownie and a chocolate chip caramel cookie(which was HUGE), total of $ 4. Not bad pricing I’m thinking given the sizes. We have them for desert, everyone a piece of each, and they are deemed to be terrific. Both of them. Both large enough that we have some carefully packed away for the next day. The baker and I did step outside to confirm that indeed I had seen a sign for cupcakes, and yes, there is one in the window. Perhaps there will be cupcakes next time we pass by, which will be soon, this is a very cute block of Allen Street these days. Ill be back, for the street and this store.
