Oh, the memories! They used to have Thursday’s in the Square here all the time before it moved to Canalside. But I can see why they moved it, the area wasn’t big enough and disrupted the flow of traffic. But this place is classic. Sadly, there are homeless people that sleep on that monument in the square. I’ve also seen stoners sitting at the top blowing away. But this is like the staple monument of downtown Buffalo.

I’m looking for someone that can laugh louder than anyone else. I’ve looked long and hard, but I haven’t found that«laugher yet.» Perhaps I will find them in Lafayette Square. This is the«true centre» of downtown, even though Niagara Square is the real centre. This centre is on Main, and it’s bisected by what’s left of Broadway… so in terms of urban planning, it’s effectively the centre of the centre. It’s also where the ball drops for New Year(so it’s the equivalent of Times Square, although very different), and where concerts were held for a long time with the Thursday In The Square series that I just reviewed. Homeless people and cops hang out here in fair numbers, but it’s lined with grand buildings and big dreams and haunted memories of the past. I love this Square… it’s part of the heart and soul of Buffalo and could only score a 5 from me. But we’ve been looking for my Llama for days. Have we found my Llama-yet, squire?

Lafayette Square was one of the original public spaces which was created by Joseph Ellicott’s Buffalo urban master plan in 1804. The square was previously named Court House Park and it is located in the center of Buffalo. It was lined by some of the tallest buildings in the area during the 1800’s. This park also displays the beautiful monument called«Soldiers and Sailors» which was created in memory of the Civil War. Court House Park was renamed Lafayette Square in honor of WW1 General Lafayette who visited Buffalo in 1825. President Abraham Lincoln also gave a speech and publicly addressed Buffalonians here. Lots of Buffalo history here and the monument is really worth seeing close up and personal.
