So I was searching for a leather goods and craft store after completely striking out at Jo-Ann’s and finding a standard rivet tool does not work on leather, and cursing quite a bit. Unfortunately a Unilocal search didn’t reveal much except a furniture store and a Middle Eastern Restaurant. Bummer. But a Google search led me to M Steffan’s Sons. And what a find! This place is awesome. Established in 1851… EIGHTEENFIFTYONE, people. They’ve been around a long, long time. And whoddathunk, right on the edge of the Theater District as well. I made the quick trip to visit their store this morning. When I arrived, the owner Linda Steffan was outside walking her dog Milo, but came right in to answer all of my questions and help me find everything I was looking for. She was very friendly, and very helpful and her store well stocked with everything you might want for leather craft. Need a leather boot, shoe, bag or another accessory repaired — they do that, too. They also offer workshops on Monday mornings where you can learn from an expert working on a real project. Our Unilocal community tends to be hyper focused on the retail and hospitality industry, but specialty shops like these need to get their mentions. Go check out M Steffan’s Sons next time you’re in the Theater District, even if you just stop to give Milo a treat and say hello to Linda! And spread the word on Unilocal so this 160 year old business stays alive in our community!
