HUGEFISHFRY!!! Huge pice of beer battered haddock, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad and a heap of fries. Perfectly cooked fish. Great fish fry! I wish I took a picture of my plate. Next time.

If you want to experience a Buffalo Fish Fry in all of its glory, you’ve just got to head to Wiechec’s! Just imagaine… a place that looks like it hasn’t been remodeled since the ’70’s… with a bunch of friendly waitresses that may or may not all be part of the Wiechec family. Add a huge plate that is filled to overflowing with potato salad, cold slaw, macaroni salad, AND french fries… and then has a freshly fried piece of haddock at least a foot long, and a slice of heavenly fresh buttered rye bread balanced on top. There’s a choice of beer battered, breaded(my favorite), broiled, or blackened fish. Everything tastes delicious. And, the prices are fair. Just remember: it’s cash only(ATM on premises) and HUGE crowds on Friday during Lent.

A staple in South Buffalo. Great selection on menu. Great soups and chili.$ 5 lunch sandwiches. Fish fry everyday. Plenty of seating but parking sucks. Food is great. Full bar. Friendly staff. Two thumbs up

Other than being a little small, this place is pretty good. Pretty decent menu and the food was fair, good for bar food. Would go again, plus it’s right next to my house

I’ve been to Wiechec’s 3 times. The fish fry is very good, one of the better ones in the area. But it isn’t worth the wait long wait for tables on a Friday night. Jade’s in Depew is just as good if not better for a fish fry and is a little less congested. I’ve also tried beef on weck here, and it was acceptable but slightly chewy/gristly. Last night I tried the«Bronx Bomber» which seemed awesome when I read the description on the menu. Steak with melted mozzarella, lettuce, tomatoes and a stuffed hot pepper on french bread. But it didn’t have much flavor aside from the hotness of the stuffed pepper. And it was impossible to hold the damn sandwich together. The steak was tender, but just had a weird flavor reminiscent of an uncleaned cooking grill. The last thing I thought was that this sandwich would be bland, but it really was bland with a stuffed hot pepper added. My wife had the fish fry. Solid fish fry, good coleslaw. Like a hundred other places in the area. Interesting sandwich menu but average execution on the sandwiches I had. I like old-style Buffalo pubs like this but I would only go back if I happened to be in the area.

This place is very busy on a Friday night and not in a good way. It’s small and you don’t have a good place to stand waiting for a table.(30 minutes). This was our first time at this place and I came for the Fish Fry. My companions wanted wings. We discovered they don’t do wings on Friday nights. The Fish Fry was like any other I’ve ever had so I wished I’d gone someplace else where the furnishings are nicer and the waiting not so uncomfortable. They only accept cash. Soda is sold by the 12oz can so no free refills. They forgot to give me a tarter sauce and I waited another 10 minutes to get the waitress’s attention. Its comes with mounds of macaroni, potato salad, and cole slaw but I’m not fond of mayonnaise laden salads. I wouldn’t go here again and I don’t recommend it.

Ohh wiechecs, been here every time I’ve been to visit family, and I gotta say, this past visit was actually good. The potato and macaroni salad weren’t overloaded with mayo. The fish fry is good, but we got the Cajun blackened fish and it came with Cajun rice, not bad. Don’t order water or iced tea, doesn’t taste filtered. Soda, sorry pop, is the way to go.

Currently live in CO and came in town for the weekend. I had to come here twice bc it’s so good. Their beer battered fish is amazing. Make sure you try the hot fries. Wings. Perogies. And beef on weck. You really can’t go wrong with anything here. And the staff is great!

Was looking for a lunch place today and came across Wiechec’s on Unilocal here. With all the wonderful reviews from my fellow Unilocalers I decided to give them a try. Went to their facebook page to see their menu. Was nice to see it was posted fresh today, so I knew it was up to date. Called in my order for Flat Iron Steak Sandwich. Guy asked what I wanted on it and I was like I dunno what do you usually put on. He was like«anything ya want, lettuce, tomato, onion even fried peppers and onions.» No reason to go further as steak with fried peppers and onions sounded delicious. Had them cook it medium rare with some provolone too. Pick up was seamless, place inside reminded me of the many corner bars that decorate South Buffalo. Took the sandwich to the car and was a bit disappointed when I opened it up and it only had a pickle as a side. But man the sandwich was so good I quickly forgot about the disappointment. A nice healthy sized piece of steak cooked to perfection, and man their onions and peppers were frickin fantastic. Sweet caramelized goodness. Really no complaints at the price point of $ 9 after tax. Was more than happy with deciding to check this place out today. I’ll be back to explore the menu more.

We chose this place purely from the Unilocal reviews. We are not from the area and wanted an «off the beaten path» dining experience. There are a lot of choices on the menu. The waitress was very friendly and recommended the roast beef and peppers. Both were delicious! Buffalo wings were great as well. I think the place could use a good scrubbing and face lift but all in all was worth a try.

We always come here during lent for a fish fry at least twice a year and it is amazing. I get the breaded and my husband gets the beer battered. They are absolutely outstanding it is my favorite fish fry!

Must go!!! Went there for fish fry Friday. Friendly service and awesome fish. All the sides were amazing but I just couldn’t eat that much mayo at one sitting. Cole slaw, potato, and macaroni salad were all dressed in mayo, it was a bit much for me to stomach. Otherwise, it was really delicious!!!

This is by far my favorite place for lunch and dinner in Buffalo. Their fish fry is outstanding and so is nearly everything else on the menu. Not only is the flavor great but the portions are more than plenty at an affordable price. All soups are homemade and hearty, Bartenders are friendly and welcoming, and the drinks are cheap(full bar). I have tried the majority of the menu and the flat iron steak sandwich and beer battered chicken sandwich are my favorites so far. There is a big bar area with a pool table and dart board along with a large seating area in the back. Don’t walk into Wiechecs without an appetite!

Going along with the trend i think this is easily one of the best fish frys in buffalo! They give you plenty for the price and have been doing it well for years! Def a must go to restaurant for the fish fry and even if you don’t like it they have plenty else to choose from

This is absolutely my most favorite place in all of Buffalo for a fish fry. It’s huge!!! You can’t get anymore more Polish than this Wiechecs. I love this place because because it offers 3 types of friday fish fry: baked, battered, or fried… an option for everyone! I’m honestly interested in trying something else on the menu just to see if the serving is just as big. Some things you should know: — good luck with parking. Just keep circling the area until you find something. — typical wait time on a Friday is 30 – 90 minutes. The bar area is sizable, will be packed with people waiting for a table, but has affordable mixed drinks and beer. — wait staff is very friendly, but don’t get mad if they don’t check in on you. You’ll have to waive someone down for a refill or a check. Honestly, it’s not a bad place to take a date. It will show her that you like small town places off the beaten path. Wiechecs is homey and comfortable.

So delicious! Just your neighborhood tavern with great food. Make sure you make reservations, it gets busy! We started with the seafood gumbo and the New England clam chowder. Both cups were overflowing with yummy hot soup. The guys had the beer battered fish fry and I had the breaded. I must say, I prefer Cod fish fry’s and this is haddock with the skin on it. But that aside, it as the best breading I have ever had on a breaded fish ever! The dinners came with Mac salad– very good and basic, coleslaw — very good and creamy and French fries– also very good. The prices were great too! Can’t wait to go back and try more things on the menu. I sent my dad, stepmother and Grammy there the next weekend, they LOVED it! Their new favorite fish fry, and they are picky!

«Great Place to Eat!!!» We had our first visit last week Friday, with my mother-in-law for her 89th birthday! She and I had the half fish dinners and they were more then enough for us. Instead of everything that comes with a normal fish fry, I had green beans and baked potato, and my mother-in-law had a chef salad and the fish. It was the best fish fry that we have ever had. All three of us had the breaded fish, that was very crunchy and so good! My husband loved all the side he had with his fish fry which was cole slaw, macaroni salad and choice of potato. He had the french fries. In addition that that, my hubby had the seafood bisque which was too spicy for the women, but he loved it. Full of seafood too! After dinner, we all split a slice of chocolate/peanut butter pie. Homemade and delicious. We can’t wait to go back! Keep up the excellent work! Our waitress was wonderful and very accommodating as well.

I’ve discovered 2 things that are hard to do when it comes to food in WNY: Stand out as one of the best places to get pizza & wings and one of the best places to get an awesome fish fry. The reason is because there are so many places that do it so well, it’s actually hard for a restaurant to stand out from the crowd as one of the best. As part of the WNY custom, I’ve eaten at countless places on fri nights for fish fry’s and sometimes you get lucky the fish is really good, but the sides aren’t that great. Or, all the sides are wonderful and the fish is bleh. Rare do you find a place that has great fish, perfect sides, reasonable/cheap prices all in one. I would have to say that Wiechec’s does all 3. In my opinion it’s one of the top 3 places to get a fish fry in WNY. I’ve eaten here on fri nights about 5 – 6 times this past year and each time the service, food and experience was the same and I left completely satisfied. I will admit that I’ve never ordered anything but the fish fry but other friends I’ve gone with have and said the food they ordered was good. The fish is perfect — large(hang off your plate) haddock filet, the beer batter is light and crispy with a nice flavor, not greasy at all. The sides(french fries, cole slaw, potato salad, rye bread) are all fresh and taste really good. The slaw is not sour, or too sweet or too mushy-its just right. The potato salad is the same way. Fries are golden brown, crispy and not greasy. The service is fast and the prices are extremely reasonable. This is an old school buffalo bar/ginmill that’s been serving food for a long time and has the look and feel of a place that has a lot of history and is weathered and battle scarred. This is not fine upscale dining, but if you’re looking for a great fish fry on a fri night… go early and go hungry. You won’t be disappointed.

Watch out for the cops. They are currently staking out this bar, conducting«Y Checks». They basically make sure your fly is up. If it is down, they arrest you for intent to indecently expose non-Polish Salami in a Polish neighborhood. What to order: The Cajun Chicken Sandwich, extra spicy. This place recently changed its name to Wiechecs. This happened because they used to have a sign on the door that said«we only accept checks.» They got inundated with customers asking them«why checks?» The rest is history. Wiechec’s is one of the most Buffalonian places you could ever hope to go. It’s in an old, run-down part of town just near the thruway, and it’s a quintessential Buffalo dive-bar. The patrons have all been going there for 40 years, and their families even longer before them. It has a lovely atmosphere, but the real surprise here is the absolutely delicious food! What else is good: The Burger, the wings, the steak sandwich. Not bad: Fish Fry & Beef On Weck. So I got on a scale in the bathroom of a truck stop, and some guy was like OMGYOUARESOHEAVYYOUFU**INGFAT A**HOLE and I was like, oh, this must be one of those«Weigh Jerks». Well this bar is full of weighjerks. In fact they named the place after them. It’s one of the better Beef on Weck with gravy sandwiches I’ve ever had, but the real gem on the menu is the heavenly, delicious, spicy-as-hell Cajun Chicken sandwich. I always ask for it extra-juicy, extra-spicy. First of all, the grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms and co. on this sandwich are phenomenal. Secondly, the chicken is huge, juicy, perfect, incredible. Thirdly, on its day the juiciness and spiciness can blow your head off! Fourthly, it’s simply-put one of the best sandwiches I’ve tried, anywhere! You’re going to love it! Other things on the menu: the good… the burger. It’s phenomenal! It’s one of the tastiest, juiciest burgers in town. I wasn’t expecting it, because I have high standards for burgers(but nothing compared to Alex K), however it’s cheaper than most gourmet burgers, but better than nearly all of them. It’s one of the best burgers in WNY, easily. And the wings. Oh my goodness wings. Some of the better wings in town. And as juicy as I asked for them to be. Absolutely awesome, give them a try. Their steak sandwich is nearly as good as the Cajun Chicken, and their Beef on Weck is fantastic too. I can’t get past the incredible Cajun Chicken. Nomnomnom. The okay: the fish fry. Everyone raves about it, but I’m not into it. I had it battered. I think it’s the kind of fish they use, is not the juiciest and therefore not my faves. Buffalo Joe’s and Shannon Pub are off the charts. Also the Beef On Weck is good, but not amazing, and doesn’t taste as good as Charlie The Butcher’s. But forget all that — you *must* try the Cajun Chicken Sandwich, extra spicy. Such a great place with such great food at such good prices, served late(til 10pm ish every night). Add onto that the fact that you’re supporting a little family-run bar in a part of Buffalo that has suffered a population exodus, and you’ll be satisfied, feel morally good about your dinner, and will have unearthed a little Buffalonian gem as well. Yay! Note. They don’t accept checks. Had you going though. I’ve never been into girls that get high all the time. Yeah I know some really cute and smart girls get high a lot, but I know one too many of these«Weed Chicks». And for some reason all the weedchicks hang out at this bar. Hence they call it Weedchicks. Apparently this bar is sitting on a LOT of money. Hence the name«Warchests». I guess it could be worse. It could be who**chests. And don’t forget. Being gay is lots of fun, if you’re a man. I know you might be asking yourself, «why be gay? Why be attracted to men? There’s all these chicks out there. Why dudes?» Well my response to that would be, «why chicks?»
