Brown’s Custom Fencing and Construction

I can’t comment on the quality of this company’s fencing because my fence isn’t finished. Their timeliness and customer communication is lacking, however.
We made a downpayment (½ of the total) on a fence 4 ½ weeks ago. At that time Mike Brown told us it would be 3 ½ to 4 weeks before we got our fence, and we agreed that that would be fine. What we didn’t realize, however, was that we would have to call repeatedly for any information about when the work would happen and that once the fence was started, when it would be finished was anyone’s guess. My fence was started on Tuesday. I called Thursday morning to find out when they’d be back to finish it and didn’t hear anything all day. My husband called this morning (Friday), and when he finally got a call back about two hours later, Mr. Brown said it would be the middle of next week before they returned to finish the fence. The delay is frustrating, but the lack of communication is the real problem.
My husband also pointed out that the workers buried one of the drains from our house when they were here to start the fence. Mr. Brown wanted to argue about whose responsibility this was and whether or not we pointed out to him or his crew that the drain outlet shouldn’t be buried (!). At that point, my husband told him to forget it — that it wasn’t worth arguing about someone’s taking a shovel and going out to unbury the drain.
All in all, I’m finding this a very frustrating experience. I understand that delays happen in construction, but I expect to be kept informed about the schedule — especially given the amount of money involved in the project. I also expect a company to stand behind its workers and their work and to make things right when there is a snag. Brown’s may not have been under a contractual obligation to unbury the drain, but in my experience doing so would have been part of providing quality service. I will add to this review if my fence is ever finished and include an assessment about the quality of the fence itself.
