Jake Richardson Personal Training

I trained around and with Jake Richardson for a couple of years at a boxing gym. Jake is a freak athlete and an even better fitness and boxing trainer. Jake makes the workouts fun and he is great at incorporating body weight, weights and boxing routines into one amazing workout. The surprising thing is that Jake doesn’t seem to ever repeat the same routine twice. He constantly shows us exercises and techniques that we have never done before. I genuinely enjoyed just hanging out with Jake while we trained. It seems like all his clients feel the same way too. Next time you are training with Jake ask him to do upside down hanging rope pull ups!

This brotégé has been exercising with Jake for the past 3 months or so. My goals are mainly weight loss, and training for a century ride later this spring. Doctor said if you want to lose weight AND keep it off, you gotta build lean muscle mass, and that means lifting.
Jake will basically do what you want him to do. He will help you with your goals. If you want him to mock you as you dry heave, doubled over on the mat, he will mock you mercilessly. If you want him to work you to the point where you are sobbing into your sore muscles, he will do that with a smile. But it’s always friendly and always super motivating.
He also seems to know your limitations, whether it’s in regard to your abilities, or a recent accident. I was a little worried at first, because he made me work through some pain that I thought was borderline dangerous, but as it turns out, I’m just a wuss.
Jake is your brofessor. He will give you nutrition advice, brotein suggestions, and also advise you on general health issues (like one time I couldn’t move my arms anymore, and I asked him if it’s gonna be like that forever. He basically just told me to man up, but with sweeter, more sugary words such that I finally stopped crying).
It’s 3 fricken months, and I’m already swol as shit. I can’t wait to see what sort of malformed hypertrophic beast I am destined to become.

Okay, it’s time to get a bit serious about this, because I feel that my time with jake has been transformative. I now fit into large sized shirts (as opposed to XL to, embarrassingly, XXL). My waist has gone from 42 to 36. I’ve done the century ride I set out to do… twice, on our (my wife, who also trains with jake) own… before our actual supported century ride. And they were easy. Jake, sneakily, vastly improved our core strength, which is essential to how endurance cyclists hold themselves up when in a tuck. He targeted our triceps… another often overlooked muscle essential for cycling. He really knows what he’s doing. And we’ve started on Olympic lifts. Incredible. Next time I report back, I will have achieved my next goal…6 pack abs. Remember… I was a waist size 42 when I started down this road.

Longtime Unilocal lurker, first review ever… because Jake is that awesome! I started doing strength training with him a few months ago (along with my hubby) and the gains have been amazing. When we first started, I could barely do any crunches without cramping up right away; my ab/​core muscles had not been worked in a VERY long time. Now I can crank them out indefinitely like it’s no big deal. TRX tucks, pikes, etc. no problem! Same with upper body and legs (can’t skip leg day!), and overall stability, agility, and fitness.
The thing I love about these workouts is that Jake really customizes them to what you’re looking for. If you ask him to push you to your limits (as hubby and I did), he will gladly do so. As soon as he notices that things are getting «too easy», he amps it up so that we’re not wasting our time. And if we give him feedback about a workout, or something specific we’d like to work on, he listens and adjusts future workouts accordingly.
If you saw the couch-​potato me even just 6 months ago, you would not have guessed that I could do a 70-​mile bike ride in half a day (did that yesterday), training to do my first century ride in May. I never would have gotten this far without Jake’s challenging but fun workouts every week — turns out that building those core muscles has been key!
My only complaint: my pants are too loose now after all the body fat I’ve lost. A shopping spree may be in order!

You want a personal trainer? Got your man right here! I have had 2 other personal trainers in the past, and Jake is my favorite! He has been my trainer for about 1.5 years (summer 2013) and he is super awesome.
What are you looking for in a trainer? Someone who knows your physical limits with injuries & restrictions; someone who knows your physical & mental potential and will push you to your max; and someone who understands your goals and will get you there. Jake has the whole package! He cares about his clients, he makes the workouts challenging, and creates workout plans for you to do at home/​gym when you are not with him. My favorite part? Boxing after a full workout. Gets me so pumped and hype, and it releases all my negative energy.
Thanks Jake for always being so awesome! I guess I have to share my secret with the world someday.
