Don’t expect great service here. The owner doesn’t say hello ever and I’m not sure if that reflects onto the employees but they’re the same way. I’ve only had coffee and breakfast here and every time it’s delicious. The best coffee. Yummy breakfast sandwiches. The best bread ever. This is why I return. So good.

I love August First’s food! Which is why it makes me sad to give them only 3 stars. The good: Again, the food! I have yet to be disappointed but my favorites are definitely the salmon salad sandwich(it’s so light and refreshing!) And the BLT on their wonderful crispy/soft(yes it makes sense.) baguettes. I love that they open their garage doors in summer and since it smells delicious in there, it’s the perfect spot to curl up and read the book. The not so good: The service. I’m sorry guys but I am not blown away whenever I go in. I’ve said it before; you don’t need to be my best friend while I’m ordering but please don’t make me feel like an inconvenience because I want your yummy food. However, I will still continue to go here because I love the food and that’s really the main thing, right?

This review is for their delicious breakfast sandwiches, which we picked up before a hike. We each had an egg+cheese+sausage on brioche, and wished we had another to share! Quick service and cute warehouse space.

Enjoyed creative breakfast sandwiches with my guests last week. Also tend to repeat the walnut Hungarian rolls! Can’t get enough of them.

Nice environment in what looks like an old warehouse front. Neat display and seating arrangement. Wasn’t thrilled with the breakfast at the Hilton, so I walked two blocks over to this café bakery to grab an iced maple latte and fresh as heck croissant. So good, highly recommend for a breakfast or snack break! Just a stones throw from the waterfront, which is where I went to eat my crispy and fluffy almond croissant!

Stopped in briefly for coffee and left with a cookie as well. The baked goods looked amazing and the coffee(one iced, one hot) was top notch. Saw several people eating lunch and this is definitely going to be on my list next time in town for more than just baked goods. Can’t wait to try everything else they have to offer!

Have lunch at August First yesterday and found a great hidden gem. The sandwiches are made fresh with great ingredients and the baked goods are awesome as well. I had the turkey sandwich with the cranberry mayo which was great. I brought home for baked goods for the family which they raved about. I will keep this on my Burlington, VT checklist.

Came here for lunch and ordered the Sesame Chicken Bowl — a great choice. Looking forward to trying other items off the lunch menu.

Was here last Saturday for a casual breakfast with my husband, as we were spending a long weekend in the area. I loved the sign when we walked in prohibiting laptops :) We each had a latte(mine with vanilla, his with maple), the quality and flavor of which were outstanding. And then the pastries. OH the pastries. We shared three — an almond croissant, a cranberry-almond scone, and a maple biscuit(holy moly), each of which was better than the one before. Flaky doughs, fresh ingredients, just overall delicious. Really laid-back place I’d return to in a heartbeat.

I like this place a lot. Great food, pastries, and friendly people. The dining area is comfortable and there are always fresh flowers on the tables. I guess they’re expanding now into the space next door, so it will be interesting to see the result.

The coffee drinks and pastries are excellent. In my opinion, go with the raspberry muffins, sticky cinnamon bread and the brownies. Wash them down with a latte and a café americano. Good things will happen for you soon after.

To me, this is more of a bread and breakfast bakery place and supplier to places like City Market(aka City Markup). One orders at the register and wait for them to prepare the food. The place is nice and warm(the ovens are going) for winter, and I’m told that they open up the huge windowed garage-like doors during the summer. The food is well made. However the preparation/delivery needs work. For example, the apple crisp could have been awesome — the homemade whipped cream was 80% of what made the dish. However, there was no effort to pop it in the oven(prior to whipped topping) to heat it up. Apple crisp that is served lukewarm is bleh. My companion’s granola look like good quality. However, there was no cooking done to it, so it had to be eaten granola raw-and-crunchy, even having poured hot soy milk over it. It didn’t help that they forgot the order, so had to be reminded.

While I rarely go to the bakery, I love their Olive loaf. Even better than picking it up at the co-op or the bakery itself is getting it from the bicycle delivery cart that roams through the neighborhood with cries of «Fresh Bread.» Nothing is more Burlington that seeing a gang of kids chasing down the bread delivery guy.

Good grief what a bakery. Looks like an old auto garage but right off Main Street. When you come in you see the bakery… and these gorgeous breads and scones. Wow. Coffee. A chalkboard of breakfast sandwiches and luch sandwiches. Had a great maple syrup biscuit, orange chocolate scone, and deli sandwiches are good. BUT best of all was a calandra olive bread chucked full of olives. Crusty chewy outer… fluffy delicious inner. Among the best bread I’ve had.

Wonderful option for a quick bite in a busy environment. Food is fresh, tasty, and local. Cookies are yummy! However, if you are looking for a true café with a home-y and welcoming environment, you certainly have better options.

Great space, a lot of light and the food is fresh and well done. The sandwiches are pretty good as are any of the baked items, particularly the croissants. The parking situation is to be expected of downtown Burlington. The coffee is good all around. As many times I come here, however, the service is not good. The laptop free policy is it’s own oddity and debate(this isn’t something people are doing on the west coast, regardless of the newspaper article on the policy) — however, the friendliness Burlington seems to have in its independent food industry is sadly lacking here and is replaced with an entitlement I’ve seen observed from at least one other reviewer. As such, it was my last time here. If you go, try the cookies — and remember, you’re doing them the favor by eating there.

This is just the bread/pastry shop I want to always be near. Stopping in for a quick bite before the VT Brewers Festival was definitely the right call except I wanted more – the bread looked so good, and the sandwiches sounded so tasty. I stuck to a Walnut Hungarian Roll and wish I hadn’t split it with my wife because it was flaky and sweet and wonderful. I can’t wait to return some time for lunch.
