The restaurant at Mount Mitchell State Park was very good. We had the club sandwich, chili and peach cobbler. The views are great also!

Menu looks okay, but execution is tasteless. Burgers no sauce, plastic cheese. Club sandwich super dry. Not enough staff, staff avoids looking at you, because they don’t want to help you. The only star is for the location!

I don’t recommend this place– if I’m ever starving after a hike, I think I’d rather grab some trail mix and drive an hour to another establishment than come here again. We arrived 30 minutes before they closed, waitstaff seemed pissed off that we were there, and when we asked for coffee, we were told they threw it out because they were«almost closing». Food came out barely warm and quality was about what I got at grade school cafeterias. Confuses me that there are rave reviews about this place on Unilocal so maybe we just caught them on a bad day? Or maybe it’s because they don’t want business 30 minutes before closing, in which case I don’t understand either– just change your closing hours to a time when you won’t get pissed off about getting business.

Our first visit, and last! Waited 30 minutes for a table, only to be seated in the back corner behind the so-called«gift shop.» There were other tables available, and in hindsight it would have behooved us to ask to sit elsewhere. After the waiter took our drink and dinner order, as well as the same for the table next to us, it took over 20 minutes and two visits to the counter to finally get our drinks. Service was deplorable and the food not much better. Hamburger steak was good, but fries were limp and tasteless. Green beans were lukewarm and no seasoning whatsoever. Pork was dried out and we had to find our own barbecue sauce, as well as drink refills. Table next to us had similar issues. Saw another table who were still waiting for food when we left and had sat half an hour. All this at 3:30PM???

I was amazed to find food this good in the middle of the park. Pork BBQ sandwich was best I ever had. I swear. BBQ was mouth-watering, finger-licking good, served on artisanal bun, which just made sandwich absolutely delectable. Add to this sides of homemade mash potatoes and sweet corn, glass of cold ice tea, and beautiful mountain views from the table — yes, perfect stop before or after your hike! There is also a gift shop in same area, cute.

Great service, great food, great views even given the fog. It cleared for a bit so we could see down the mountain. What made this trip to the top of Mount Mitchell exceptional was the fact that they let us in the back door after closing early due to the fog and slow business. Everyone in our party had the bbq platter. It was very good. Three choices in bbq sauce included vinegar, mild and spicy. We had 2 choices in sides and between us we had the coleslaw, salad, chips and baked beans. The baked beans were especially good. Also one surprise side of hush puppies which were fresh and tasty. The meals were just under 10 dollars. Enough food was served that there was no room for dessert.

Walked in for a coffee mid-morning and had my mind blown open by a just-out-of-the-oven blackberry pie– Great views, great food, on the BRP– thats a biker’s trifecta.

For being ¾ of the way up a mountain, the food here was damn good, and so was the view. Nothing more than your average diner fare — at least in New England anyway. I had a Chicken Philly sandwich which was enormous and super cheesy. I highly recommend house chips rather than fries. Om nom.

I was traveling alone in the southeastern United States and a week to myself. I planned a trip to Mount Mitchell. I didn’t realize there was a restaurant there and at the time I was hungry. I thought hey I will check it out. I was impressed. I ordered something simple like chicken tenders, they gave me some desert and it was delish! There was only one other group there and that was two ladies. I had a table to myself overlooking the mountains. After my meal I went out back and sat on a rocking chair and enjoyed the view. I would make a point to stop here if you can.

It’s obvious that the owner(s) are using the isolated location and knowledge of one time tourists in their mindset. The food in this place is truly on par with a public school cafeteria. I won’t bother describing the food other than to say it was very low quality. This place is the clearest definition of tourist trap that exists. It will always generate traffic because it’s the ONLY option high up in Mt. Mitchell State Park. Of course, the Harley trash that infests the park will never read this so «traffic» will continue to roll in there. Avoid this place, the food is a joke.

Had a great, world class burger and baked potato. Wife had potato salad and slaw that rated 10 stars. Inexpensive menu and excellent food. I would plan my trip to eat there again. Excellent wait staff. Great place to stop and chat, take pictures, and enjoy the view.

Having properly lowered(non-existent) expectations, my boyfriend and I ended up at this restaurant because we just came off a hike and needed some food and warmth. The food was nothing to write home about but it was adequate for filling up two hikers and the view from the restaurant is quite nice. I had the chili, it was a decent dish. A family seems to be running the place and during the summer it seems that the teenagers in the family help out as waiters and busboys. The service is friendly and I enjoyed having a young man explain the classical southern soda Mello Yello to me. If you are up on Mt. Mitchell and need a bite to eat, I recommend checking out this place or at least get a cup of coffee and rest here for the view and the chance to get out of the wind/rain.

I’m always grateful for this place when it’s open. The food is simple fare – soup and sandwiches, coffee and desserts – but it’s well prepared, and the servers are friendly. And man do you have a great view of the surrounding mountains! In addition to the food, it’s good to have a place to go that’s out of the weather. There are times when the weather at the park becomes very forbidding – temperatures drop, fog sets in and blocks visibility, and the wind whips up and becomes very bitter. At those times I’m so cold, uncomfortable, and hungry I would even eat at Arby’s. The Mount Mitchell State Park Restaurant is a beacon to the weary traveler. It has attractive, large hewn logs for supports and rafters, wooden floors, and it has some very nice masonry work. The restaurant is open usually from late May through late October, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Maybe good for coffee and pie but the sandwiches are terrible. I ordered what was called honey baked ham sandwich. What I got was 1 slice of boiled ham. My friend had the same type deal but with 1 slice of turkey. It was the lamest attempt of making a sandwich or it was made by a 4 year old. I think state parks contract out the food concession. Hope the current contract ends soon and someone else is granted a deal. Avoid this place.
