I love both the winter and summer CSA that you can sign up for with Growing Power. It is such a phenomenal deal, it supports the community, and the produce/eggs/honey are top notch. It was interesting to see how different the honey is depending on where the bees live. During the winter CSA, there is a community market selling all sorts of things from the warehouse. Meat, honey, tamales, etc. As per the CSA, we get a huge variety of food that is grown all across Milwaukee and the surrounding area. Fron beets and potatoes to kale, spinach, spring mix, radish/sunflower/pea greens to cabbage, eggplant, corn, green peppers, and even mustard/beet/collard greens. The selection is top notch from Growing Power. I’m pretty surprised how few people know about this CSA.

After participating in three CSA programs, Growing Power is hands down the best. I sat on the fence for a couple months this summer. The last few years with CSA had their pros and cons. What it came down to was: I wanted to make sure I had the time to use all of the produce I was about to receive. A few trips to the grocery store picking through sad looking herbs and vegetables made me come to my senses. I signed up right away. Looking at what I’ve received in the past two weeks, I feel I’ve already broke even on the investment. The half share through Growing Power is nearly as generous as a whole share from other CSAs. The produce is unmatched in quality; it stays fresh around three times as long, is bright and color and when I am really lucky, I get a half dozen of the best eggs ever. Friday pickups are that the warehouse in Butler. I was not aware this was here, but I enjoy picking up here. They have a private lot(watch for the tomatoes growing around the door) and I can park and pickup at the office window with ease. Sometimes you can even catch a glimpse of Will Allen working in back. Whether Will is there or not, everyone is friendly and helpful. If you are unsure about a CSA, try is for a week with one of Growing Power’s Market Baskets. It will give you a glimpse into what a CSA is like, not to mention another great deal on produce. They even have a Fruit Basket, Organic Basket and a smaller Senior Basket. Need another push to try it? I currently have a quiche in the oven. I used some of this week’s onions, baby rainbow chard and farm fresh brown eggs. I plan to top it off with sunflower sprouts and fresh salsa, because I also received red, ripe tomato and a big bunch of cilantro in this week’s haul. Although it is only week two, I know I have wonderful, fresh food like this to look forward to until mid-October. Good luck on your fresh food adventures!
