This is a delightful, out-of-the-ordinary treat. We came for a night with our daughters(8&10) and a friend of theirs(11), four of us arriving by bicycle and the remaining grownup hauling in provisions by car. The lockhouse is a gem, four snug rooms filled with attractive period furniture, and stocked with enough old-fashioned diversions to keep kids easily entertained for an evening. Although the Clara Barton Parkway is literally just a few dozen feet away, the cars aren’t visible, and traffic declines sufficiently in the evening that when darkness falls, all you hear are the calls of birds, insects and frogs to one another. If you come in by bike, it’s not hard to sustain the illusion that you’ve been transported 80 years into the past. The kitchen is sufficiently well supplied with utensils and the like that a simple dinner of grilled cheeses, corn on the cob and watermelon was easy to prepare. Sleeping bags on the beds were(reasonably) comfortable, better in any case than lying on the floor with a Thermarest pad. The air conditioning was strong and consistent on the muggy June night we were here. All in all, you get a nice taste of the 1930s without any real hardship, and a nice entré to the canal and its history for future adventures and exploration. Recommended.
