Yellowstone Cheese is my little taste of home. I used to go here all the time with my dad when I lived back in Jim Falls to try the squeakiest of cheese curds. Now, since I’ve moved away to Florida, I have their cheese curds shipped to me, to remember home and keep my Wisconsin heart happy. The cheese here is wonderful, besides the cheese curds, with so many different varieties. They seem to love experimenting and trying out new things. I particularly like the garlic herb cheese. But, if you want something more than just cheese, they also sell things like honey and pure maple syrup in the store as well. Overall, Yellowstone makes the best cheese curds I know and will keep ordering from them, wherever I end up next!

I get the joy(sarcasm) of driving from Mpls to Wausau every couple of weeks but it’s a nice time to try some different meat markets, which I love. Nothing was really open this past Sunday during my drive home but I found this gem, which is a little off the path but easy to get to. It’s clean, has a very friendly employee and a good variety of meats, cheeses, specialty candies, pickles, candles, jams, honey, etc. I didn’t think the(Bob’s produce) meat sticks were extraordinaire but I really love the milkhouse(barn dance) creamery candle, strawberry jam and two pepper cheeses I bought.

I was born and raised in WI so I sort of feel like this is in my blood. I give Yellowstone cheese the full Five Stars. Easy to get to and very clean. The cheese curds are outstanding! If you are doing the Wisconsin to Minneapolis or visa versa trip this is an easy side stop. I have had the plain curds, dill curds, and the string cheese and they are all top quality. There are only two other places(my opinion) to get curds like this; the farmers market in Madison and the Union Star Cheese places. If you want to know what real cheese curds are supposed to taste. This is where you need to go.

For my 500th review I present to you… Squeaky cheese people! SQUEAKYCHEESE!!! Now you’re probably saying, «What the hell is he talking about, squeaky what???» Exactly what I said, squeaky cheese. Allow me to explain… I was driving from Wausau back to Minneapolis and see a sign«fresh cheese 2.5 miles ahead» and think«Oooh, what better place to get some fresh cheese than in Wisconsin» RIGHT? Dooon’cha knooow! I take the exit and head South. After 1.6 miles I see a bright red building with large yellow letters spelling C-H-E-E-S-E and think«Gee, could this be the place?» I walk in and see a good selection of cheese in the display case, plus tons more to choose from in the refrigerators. There are also bottles of maple syrup, jars of fruit preserves as well as other gift type items. One thing that caught my eye were these bags of white cheddar cheese curds sitting out on the counter.
The guy behind the counter offers me a sample of the cheese curds and of course I MUST accept! I take one, bite down and«squeak»… wait, what? As I chew I continue to get«squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak»! I think«Am I chewing on a mouse here or what?» WOW! I comment about the squeaks and the very helpful(and very easy on the eyes) Kaeden explains the curds were made fresh that morning and when the cheese is that fresh, it squeaks when you chew it. He also said it only does that the first day and will not squeak tomorrow… he was right! I look around and make a few selections. Being I’m only here a few days, I ask Kaeden to «half» the portion size of each and he happily does so. OVERALL: If you’ve ever had Wisconsin cheese before, you know it’s good stuff. If you’ve never had fresh cheese or cheese curds made that same day, you really owe it to yourself to try it, so you too can experience the«squeak».
