Excellent fresh seafood. Love the place. Prices are a bit high for the area, but I’ve been eating this fresh, delicious seafood for over a decade — even before the restaurant was opened and it was just a fish market, and the quality and taste are consistently fantastic.

We got 3 dozen clams recently, which were delicious. We also got 3 dozen oysters which were absolutely terrible. I had to open 6 oysters before I found one which was edible. Several were not only dry with no liquor, but had already spoiled and were thrown in the trash. I was able to use 8 oysters from 3 dozen. Expensive too at 15.00 + per dozen. If you want fresh seafood head to Gus & Co in Upper Montclair.

I truly feel sorry for this place for 2 reasons. I was here labor day weekend 2014 and received the laziest carefree service in my entire life when I was the only customer there with a certain waitress on her cell phone the entire time and it was like pulling teeth just for a simple glass of water. and that’s not even the bad news. I ordered a simple tuna wrap be it it was my very first visit and the tuna was fine which is the only thing that went right for me this rotten day but I knew something was wrong cause the vegetables tasted rather bad. 2 hours later I had no choice but to summon an ambulance in a public place I of course choose not to name because of my illness which was to that extreme! imagine if the tuna was as rotten as the vegetables which was bad enough! the only reason or two that I never pressed charges and perhaps even have this place shut down for good is because if its any consolation to me my results in the hospital I hate to admit came back positive and the following day I was fine thank goodness. I asked for free food for a week from the owner himself but had to settle for 1 measly free meal which wasn’t good enough in my book for all the hospital bills I had to deal with anyway. BEWARETHISPLACELADIESANDGENTLEMEN!

My wife and I first time. Was great. I had blackened swordfish. Delicious. She had the piccata. She loved it. I’m thinking I’m coming back soon with the whole family.

This is a small store front restaurant in the front of a fish market. Small with about 8 – 10 tables. The seating that is available is comfortable. It byob. Fish is great. Its worth a try if you enjoy fish.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this review. I have lived in town for 17 years and have gotten my fish for Christmas Eve here for 17 years. Each year I know I spend more then I should on fish but I tell myself«it’s a special meal and the fish should be the best» so I spend a little extra. Well, this year they outdid themselves. My order was 2lbs of cooked large shrimp, 3lbs cleaned raw jumbo shrimp and 1lb of seafood salad… drumroll…$ 215.00! Could not believe the price. This year was at least $ 70.00 more then last year and I ordered more last year! I left my order there on the table and told them they were ridiculous. Walked out empty handed, never to walk in again. They are taking advantage of the holiday. Shame on you Caldwell Seafood!

While the fish is usually very fresh, the portions are growing smaller by the month and we have been eating there for over 13 years. I loved the Broiled Captain’s Platter and used to share it. Not anymore. It’s not even enough for one. And the fresh veggies are also disappearing. My husband loves the steamers and pays whatever the price. The owner, Tom, is rude and just doesn’t care about his customer’s comments. I remember when there were lines, now there are just empty tables. Who wants small portions for big $$$$ and an owner with a bad attitude?

First time at this seafood market. Needed some fresh jumbo shrimp to grill up for the 4th of July. And since Wegman’s was a bit of a drive for me, I decided to try this seafood market, rather then the local Shop-Rite or Whole Foods. I also heard very good things about this place. I walked in through the front door on Bloomfield Ave, which brings you into the dining area with a few tables. A few people we’re having lunch. Further down the hall, a couple steps away is the market area. My first impression was the cleanliness, which it was. The seafood looked all incredibly fresh, laid out on ice, and the fishy smell as typical to seafood markets was non-existent, which was a plus. The only issue that was a bit jaw dropping for me, was that the prices were VERY high. I’m not sure if other seafood markets in NJ are this high in prices. I know people who have purchased seafood at Chelsea Market in NYC and on Arthur Ave in the Bronx, I don’t think the prices are as high as those places. The jumbo shrimp was $ 29 for 1 lb. I needed 3 lbs but settled for 2 lbs since the price was a little more then I expected to pay. However, on the way out, I grabbed a take-our dinner menu and found that the pricing for dinner seems very reasonable. I’ll have to give it a shot for dinner sometime, since some entrée’s on the menu, such as the Almond Crusted Halibut and Lobster Agnoloti Pasta sounded pretty decent. But as for purchasing fresh seafood here to cook, I’ll head somewhere else next time, since the prices are very high, for the cleaned jumbo shrimp anyway.

My boyfriend and I went here for Valentine’s Day dinner. It should be noted that there was a large snowstorm the day before Valentine’s Day, so shipments and lack of fresh supply may be due to this. I ordered the lobster bisque to start, but they were out(again, possibly snowstorm-related), so my boyfriend and I shared the garlic shrimp appetizer. The garlic sauce was good – buttery and full of flavor – but the shrimp themselves tasted heavily of iodine, which leads me to believe they were frozen and not fresh(snowstorm-related?). My boyfriend ordered the tuna, which he said was decent, and I ordered the lobster stuffed with crab meat. The lobster was okay – definitely not the freshest I have ever had, but I guess that’s what I get for ordering a lobster from a non-ocean-bordering town in the middle of winter after a snowstorm. However, the lobster meat was slightly tough, leading me to believe it was overcooked. For $ 45, I expected slightly better quality, all other obstacles aside. The crab meat filling was decent, but it was 50% crab meat(tasted great) and 50% breading. The mashed potatoes on both plates were yummy. We didn’t stay for dessert. Overall, an OK seafood experience, but I’ve had much better at other restaurants. If you’re not used to exceptional seafood, this place will do in a pinch if you’re craving fish or a crustacean. Also of note: the seafood store part of the restaurant reeked heavily of fish when we walked in, indicating that something there was not fresh. Perhaps that should have been our clue to walk out again…

I’ve never had a dinner here, but this is where I’d go for all my seafood. It’s a nice selection and the staff is always knowledgable. If you’re driving make sure you use the municipal parking behind the«super food town».

I’ve eaten at Caldwell Seafood at least 6 times, ANDTHEFOODISDEFINITELY4 ½ to 5 stars! We love the crusted halibut in particular, and they will always make it for me w/their horseradish crust(wich is sometimes on the«specials» menu), but it’s great w/the almond or mushroom crust on the regular menu. It’s a seafood market in the back, and restaurant in the front, and it’s BYOB. So why 4 stars and not 5? Well, there are two small complaints: 1). The décor is ok(fish mural on one wall and some nice large photos of coral reefs on the other walls), but I’m not digin’ the white«office-like» drop ceiling and its not as cozy or romantic as it could be(I’d suggest a darker ceiling, a few candles on the tables, and better lighting)., and 2). the bread is terrible. But the food is otherwise almost five-star, the portions are very generous, the vegetable/potato side dishes are perfectly cooked, and the fish is so fresh and delicious. They have a middle-aged to older crowd that really appreciates this kind of quality(I guess the younger crowd either doesn’t seek out this quality, or prefers chains like Olive Garden or places with a bar scene). But the food is really great… Go for the halibut if you get the chance.

As a seafood lover I’m ashamed to admit that it has taken me a long time to try this place as a restaurant. Years ago my husband and I would come here buy fish for home(yes I can cook)…but never made the transition — shame on us. I started with the Manhattan Clam Chowder — one of the best I’ve ever had. Loaded with clams and flavor and a tinge of spice — just enough to make me want more — lots more. I had the black sea bass with avocado salsa and grilled veggies… amazing. Others had the salmon and scallops. Everyone left happy(a rarity)…and I left wanting to come back soon to try the scallops, or maybe the trio, or maybe the tuna, or maybe. If I could have given 4 ½ stars I would have. The only downside was the space is dated and the chairs are not that comfortable. I will be back.

I live in nyc but was visiting a friend’s family out in Jerz for the weekend. we went out to a few different restaurants and Caldwell’s was by far the best quality in terms of food. I do not get out much for seafood in the city, so this was a great treat. service and ambiance was fine as well, but the food was the best part!

I’ve been hearing how great this place is for a long time. I bought a couple of big lobsters for our last anniversary, and they were okay(Kings are better) but we were up at a wake in Caldwell so decided to go. I guess this place is trying for a Cape Cod type vibe – fish market in the back, small restaurant in the front. Hideous murals with fish swimming around on a blue, blue background. Tables crampy and very hot in the place, with only a ceiling fan. We ordered a calamari dish, fish and chips and fried flounder. The calamari came and it was very odd looking, with no tentacles, which can only mean FROZEN. It did not taste very good. The two platters were large, with a pile of incinerated fries(I always ask for fries well done, but these were beyond crispy). The cute young waitress was running around the room, but I felt the service was brusque – no one asked if everything was okay, and when she asked if we wanted to take the calamari home(we had left most of it) and we said no, she didn’t ask if we liked it. Oh well. Came home and had diarrhea the rest of the night(I know, too much information). Not sure why this place has a good reputation. I would never set foot in there again. BTW the fish market has an odd look and the fish is ridiculously expensive: $ 19.99/lb for codfish? Really???

The food is well prepared but every time I have dined there items that are on the menu, they don’t have in stock. I am especially talking about the pasta. There is a dish with black fettuccine but they never have the pasta. Last night my husband ordered Shrimp Scampi but in stead of over linguine he wanted over regular fettuccine. They came back and said they were out of fettuccine so he went with the linguine. No big deal but why can’t this restaurant keep pastas in stock! This has happened on many occasions. If you aren’t going to have those items in stock please take them off the menu. I would give it 2 stars for not updating their menu 3 because it is just ok. The prices are pretty high for what you get. I would recommend going a few miles away to PF Market seafood. Very good place and they have the pasta in stock!
