We loved this place and use to go a couple times a week for breakfast. It was bought by the grocery store and haven’t been back since. We’ve heard nothing but bad reviews. Miss the old spot

This café has been closed. We are part timers on the Island and had really enjoyed the local spot for about 5 years. It will be missed. It’s July, 2013 and the little café is being replaced by a deli.

Tried the Philly Cheesesteak Omelette for breakfast and YUM. We’ve been here twice and each time everything was good including the coffee.

Don’t the people who live here need to eat? Took an afternoon trip on the motorcycle, drove through Stanwood mid-afternoon, and hungry, figuring I’d find a restaurant on Camano. You know, a clam and mussel shack on the water, like the 50 such places on Whidbey. I was wrong! The people here don’t eat, as near as I can tell, and they’re just plain old not set up for tourists. Get near the waterfront, and you’re faced with signs saying«Private! Keep Out! We’re talkin’ to you, Bill! Nothing for you here!». So a few miles in, I told myself I’d just eat at the first place I found. Hello, Elger Bay Café! A bacon cheeseburger and a cup of clam chowder, and I was happy. Ok, so the cheeseburger was a little overcooked, and the clam chowder was more Campbell’s than local. Still, that’s pretty much exactly what I expected seeing the place from the main road, and to be honest I would’ve been shocked if it’d been any different. Perfectly good diner grub. I really don’t know about the negative reviews, but if I lived here, maybe I’d go stir crazy for a proper restaurant, too.

Great for where and what it is! I’m not discounting the reviews that say it’s hit or miss, but I’ve eaten there twice, and the food has been very good. Everyone at our table said it was very good, and even though one of us complained about a little lapse in service, the place was full, and they were even doubling up on tables, so I’m willing to cut them a little slack. There really isn’t another good option at that end of the island, and I, for one, am glad that the Elger Bay Café is there, let alone quite tasty. Too bad they aren’t open for dinner.

Love the home made and award winning chili they make on Thursdays. Good food at a reasonable price. Waitresses are attentive and make sure your coffee or soda is full.

I only have two words… ok 3 words… THIS.PLACE.SUCKS! Bleh! Ugh… my skin crawls as I try to write this. Here’s the deal. I had to spend almost a year near this«café» and it’s the only place to eat without driving the 18 miles to Stanwood. You have to be desperate or starving or have NO sense of smell or taste to eat here. The place is next to Elger Bay Grocery which is a great little store. Too bad the café isn’t the same. I’ve eaten here at least 4 – 5 times. «But Mona… why did you continue to eat here?».you ask? Because I was desperate. Coming home to an empty fridge, or partying hard all night and then waking up and not being able to do anything other than walk to car, start, drive and then come here, or healing from major surgery and not being able to cook(insert your tale of woe here…). The food is what I call, «bland, non inspired, lazy, American classic.». The hash browns aren’t fresh but from frozen and have NO flavor. When you order the«eggs benedict», the eggs are hard boiled and you can break glass with them and the sauce tastes like lemon ice cream. The coffee is battery acid. You can see for yourself, just walk towards the bathrooms and you can see the battery acid coagulating in the coffee urn on your right. Nothing is homemade or fresh. As for the service, it doesn’t exist. The servers are rude, have one foot in the grave and no customer service skills. The last time I ate here I said the eggs benedict was cold and the eggs like hockey pucks. The waitress asked me what i wanted, I asked her for poached eggs, not hockey pucks. She gabbed about being«busy seating a 7 seat party» and when she«poured the sauce the eggs got hard». Umm… WTF? So you are telling me you can’t handle your job? Well, no shit! Ugh! The good news is, I only have a few more weeks in this house and I will no longer be reminded of the crap food and service here. Do yourself a favor, just keep driving the 18 miles to stanwood. There are a few decent joints there but your best bet is just to keep driving to Seattle or Bellingham.

Good old fashioned breakfast comfort food. Yum, and reasonably priced. Good service, coffee and hot off the griddle.

When it’s good it’s good otherwise the cook of the day can send you screaming for the hills. The chicken fried steak is either amazing or a cold greasy mass. And for Pete sakes when I order the gravy on the side I mean it do not scape it off and flip the thing over like I won’t notice. I will! Second would it hurt to clean the floors every now and again? The price is fair for the amount of food when it’s good, otherwise it’s just food to fill the hole.
