One of our favorite places in the Boston area. Generally excellent all around, good portions, and fun atmosphere. The cataplana was excellent, as was the bacalhau lagareiho. If you are not familiar with Portuguese food, pick a dish with ingredients you recognize and you won’t be disappointed. If you do know Portuguese food, you will be pleased with everything!

I had a very unfortunate experience at this restaurant however it was only in the last 5 minutes of my stay. We had attended as a group of six acquaintances to discuss career network topics. When it came time to pay the check, the server not only refused to let us split the check, refused to give us separate checks, and refused to let us pay with more than two cards. I was completely livid and have worked in the service industry for over ten years and could not believe that this establishment could not accommodate modern payment options. The server’s only explanation was that the menu states«only 2 cards per table» albeit in small print on the bottom. I was told there is an ATM a few blocks away but it was pouring rain out and completely inconvenient for a group of us to leave to go get cash down the street. I was not even allowed to speak to a manager when I asked to and was brushed off. Needless to say, the staff here completely put our party in an awkward situation by forcing only 1 – 2 people to pick up the tab for the rest of the guests. I am never intending to return to this restaurant simply for the reason that they are running their business in a truly archaic time period and are completely unprofessional in offering customer service and hospitality.

The place is great! LULAS Á ALHO(appetizer) is awesome! Very clean and stylish too! John the waiter is a sweetheart! Very attentive staff: if your waiter is busy someone else will help you promptly!

Best cod dish I have ever had. Perfectly creamy, salty and delicious. No fuss atmosphere and pricing is reasonable.

This place is really nice and homey. It does not have a celebrity chef or a trendy name, but it has really good Portuguese food, good service, and a fabulous outdoor patio for summer dining. I highly recommend the Walter Sampler to begin with if you like calamari. Delicious. The paella is good too. The tables are not too close together, and it is not a LOUD place. You can actually have a conversation. I have been several times and have never been disappointed.

I love Atasca. I felt like a superstar last week just because I picked it for our after book club dinner and everybody in the group loved it and told me so. I had the pork and clams with cubed potatoes. I ate every bite and didn’t share.

Very nice family restaurant. The food was excellent and the owners were very friendly. It was busy while we were there so refills were a little slow but that was the one and only negative. The atmosphere was great. Definitely worth your time and money

We found this little restaurant almost by accident on a Saturday evening when many other restaurants were full and we’re very happy we did. The atmosphere was nice; cordial, warm and friendly. People were talking an laughing but it wasn’t too loud. Our service was efficient, friendly and professional. As for the food, Wow! The portions were very generous and the flavor were wonderful. The flavor of the seafood paella was wonderfully subtle yet complex. For a date or a foursome Atasca makes for an enjoyable evening.

None of us wanted to eat only one dish so we ordered a bunch of stuff and ate it family-style. Everything was delicious, especially if you like seafood; I guess it might not be worth the trip if you’re not fond of(eating) our ocean brethren. Paelha was A+.

Rustic, simple and flavorful, the food is greats. Make sure to try the white port. It is wonderful and quite rare. It feels more like you are dining with family. The staff attentive and welcoming. Prices are very reasonable. Portions are large. Any one of their main coursess can be shared by two. It’s relaxed atmosphere makes it perfect for bringing either your family or friends.

I’m giving 2 stars based partially on nostalgia. This used to a really great place to eat when I lived in the area 2006 and before. I was excited to return. We had a long, slow, not very tasty dining experience. I was super excited for what I used to call the ‘best sangria in Boston’. Very light on the fruit now and too sweet. Our appetizers came about an hour after we arrived. Cold apps came out 10 mins before the hot apps. Nothing noteworthy about the apps — slow and average tasting. I had the pork and clams dish — my favorite(usually). The pork was DRY. Others have lamb and chicken dishes — also not great. The biggest challenge was the bill. For 5 it was 209. We wanted to split it evenly — one pay cash and put the rest on 4 cards. They have a no more than 3 card rule. So we said — deduct the cash and put half of the remainder on one card, 25% on each of the others. I know this is more complicated but it was a result of their 3 card rule. The waiter(older joke cracking unfunny one). Charged our cards got 222 $ and kept the cash. He then voided all and re-ran the card only to again over charge us $ 8. We just took it out of his tip and left. Atasca 2004 — loved you! Atasca 2014 — goodbye forever. I won’t be returning.

I went the other night for the first time with a group of 10 friends. They separated us to opposite sides, opposite ends of the restaurant even though there was plenty of space saying…“next time I guess you’ll make a reservation” Waiter Ben looks ruggedly handsome, but underneath lies a smoldering sensitive side because I made a pretty innocuous joke about his Red Sox level beard and he immediately turned and announced, «this guy just said something offensive and I want them to leave». While I admit the joke was not funny and probably stemmed from some deep seeded beard envy on my part, It didn’t seem like something to get in a twist over and I’ve never been tossed over poor comedy before. The owner came over and said we could leave. Others in the group told him that Ben was actually being a little rude not to mention immune to standard beard humor, but that was dismissed because, the owner, «knows Ben». Thank goodness for that, because given the beard and the dimly lit nature of the place, one might have confused him with a standard panhandler except that panhandlers are much nicer when they are asking for your money. The owner also was upset that we had called another place to see if they could accommodate ten of us since it seemed like a tremendous hassle. He demanded to know if we were considering eating elsewhere and was vehement about having a decision, NOW. He said he needed the tables and it was very busy, though it was not very busy and he didn’t need the tables. He kept pointing to the waiting area where there were no people waiting. Essentially he needed our relationship status ASAP and felt like we were cheating on his restaurant because we checked a reservation at another place. It was like getting accused of cheating on the first date and being forced to uncomfortably tell someone you’ve just met ten minutes ago… «yeah…I think we should see other people» I never met a restaurant with crazy eyes before, this is my first. Nutshell, I think you need a Soup Nazi size line to support a Soup Nazi size attitude, and the Soup Nazi himself wouldn’t have been able to figure out what was creasing these guys shorts.

I’ve been here twice and each time was great! A little odd to get to, but the place is very cute and has a great atmosphere. Their sangria is absolutely DELICIOUS as well as all of their dishes. Both times I went with medium-size groups of people(5 – 8) and we required reservations — the place gets very busy! The waitstaff are very cheerful and helpful in navigating the menu, which can be confusing because of the unfamiliar(albeit delicious) Portugese dishes. Definitely would recommend this place for any size dinner party looking to enjoy some good atmosphere and food in Cambridge.

Four stars purely because their sardinhas assadas were better than most places in Lisbon, and any place with Licor Beirão makes me happy. The carne de porco a alentejana was just decent, though, but maybe that’s because I judged it against Casa do Alentejo in Lisbon. Doesn’t beat the old O Cantinho on Cambridge St., but I’d go back nonetheless. And nice ambience for a date!

Like another commenter, «getting in touch with my Portuguese side» I walked in and felt very at home, and immediately understood some family heirlooms and my own decorating sense a bit more. The furniture is dark, but the décor — pottery, wine corks, warm tone walls, are very inviting and country style. The food was delicious. Fresh and well prepared. I ordered the Linguica sandwich with white cheese and a glass of Vinho Verde. Nice price of $ 6 for a glass of wine — especially for Cambridge. The linguica had a lot of flavor and was cooked properly so it was not too greasy or oily, the crusty roll was crusty and not hard. Portuguese potatoes — hard to compare to anything else — you just have to try them, lightly fried, thinly sliced, almost a cross between a potato chip and french fry. The oil is not stale — I guess if you have ever had In-and-out Burger fries they are similar, nice and light. I’m looked forward to coming back and enjoying food like my mother would cook.

Soooo disappointing. This place looks absolutely beautiful from the outside, with cool trellis-enclosed patio and bright yellow art deco awning. It got me on looks alone, so after driving by 100 times I finally went in for a try. Looks can be deceiving. The décor on the interior is really old and stuffy, a little baroque and dimly lit. The service was a little unprofessional(and I think it was the owner or manager himself who was waiting on us). And the food… I so wanted it to be good. The salmon was way overcooked and totally lacking in flavor. And the sides that came on the plate made no sense– looks like they just put steamed vegetables as a side to all the entrees regardless of what you ordered. I usually finish every last morsel of food on my plate, because i have a thing about wasting food, but here, i just had to leave it all there, without even bothering about a doggy bag. I hate to give these guys a bad review because I can tell they are trying hard, but definitely not worth your time/money in light of all the other great places nearby.

We must’ve come on the wrong day… Our experience here was like a first date gone wrong, and then progressively more wrong till it can’t get much worse. Our first impression was refreshingly good. The setting was lovely. The interior walls were decorated with beautiful Portuguese style plates and pottery. Our waitress was very prompt with taking our orders and we started out with a couple of appetizers. The table’s favorites were the crepes and the camarao com queijo de cabra. So far so good though I found the bread to be a bit stale. The problems started with the entrees. Several of us ordered the bacalhau, a specialty of Portuguese cuisine. While the Bacalhau de Cebolada was ok, the Bacalhau a Lagareiro was drenched in oil that it almost felt like stew. The grilled cod itself came very burned with sharp bones in some of the plates. Also, the taste was obviously. NOT fresh. The only positive was the potatoes, which were quite tasty. The desserts were even more of a disappointment. Two noteworthy desserts were 1) the Pasteis de Nada, which looked nothing like what I’ve seen in Portugal. Instead of a solid yellow/brown custard center, ours came in a black liquid form. The taste itself was not very favorable either. One might as well have the egg tarts from a dim sum restaurant. At least those resemble more of their original Portuguese counterparts. 2) Bolo de Chocolate. The cake tastes like it’s been sitting in the fridge for days and the raspberry sauce was squeezed on it in a very sloppy manner. I’m a big chocolate cake fan but there was nothing appealing in either the taste or the appearance of this cake. Also just to clarify, the cake came with coconut, not almond flavor, as states in the menu. Our table had mixed reviews regarding the drinks.

I would come back for the Camaráo com Queijo De Cabra(shrimp & goat cheese casserole) appetizer alone! I could make a meal out of a couple of those paired with a traditional Caipirnha cocktail. The seafood dishes are the way to go. I had the Febras De Porco(pork loin medallions, which were more like thin chops, huge portion) and they were fine, but nothing exciting. In addition to the Camaráo Com Queijo, I recommend the Ameijoas e Mexilhoes com Linguica(clams, mussels and linguica), Sardinhas Grelhadas(grilled whole sardines), and for those who like to keep it simple, the Pescador(fisherman’s platter), a generous portion of fried fish. There was also a delicious special of grilled tuna served with a seafood risotto. The portions are generous; bring a group and share. Sit on the patio if the weather allows. Our waiter, Ben, was great — attentive and funny without being annoying.

A top notch Portuguese restaurant. I’m very happy it is so close to us. I had the Bacalhau Lagareiro: lots of garlic and olive oil and the cod was grilled and baked. I have been at this restaurant before and keep going back for the food and the service. Highly recommend it!
