Boston Classical Soo Bahk Do

A friend suggested Soo Bahk Do for my daughter and she loves it!
As with almost anything, it’s really the teacher that counts the most.
Master Steyer is compassionate, caring, strict, clear, prepared, organized, engaging and he expects a lot from his students. He is very well respected by his students and he respects his students.
He is passionate about teaching and passionate about Soo Bakh Do. He has created a really lovely Soo Bahk Do community and his other teachers are excellent as well. He works equally well with adults, adolescent, smaller children and is amazing with special needs children. In short, Master Steyer is awesome. I couldn’t recommend him more highly. My daughter wants to be a Soo Bahk Do teacher when she grows up.

Soo Bahk Do is a traditional Korean martial art. It’s considered a «hard-​soft» style which means that it incorporates hard elements like you see in Tae Kwon Do and Karate and soft elements similar in some ways to Tai Chi. Class is set up in a very structured, ceremonial manner. This type of arrangement does not appeal to everybody, so it’s worth trying it out to see if it is the right fit for you. However, it should be noted that the environment isn’t the gimmick some martial arts tout. Soo Bahk’s approach to tradition and ceremony is rooted in Korean culture and philosophy, so it’s like getting a philosophical history lesson as well as a martial art. And, it’s a great discipline for kids. In Soo Bahk Do, you have to earn what you get.
Master Steyer is a highly skilled and highly knowledgeable martial artist. He has been training in Soo Bahk Do for 20+ years, and has background in other martial arts. He’s thrilled by learning new things so he brings a diverse repertoire of knowledge to the Soo Bahk Do curriculum that rounds out areas typically not covered in Soo Bahk Do. He’s also very self defense oriented, which is useful and adds a practical aspect to the training. I’ve learned lots of good joint locks since I’ve been here :) He can be a strict teacher, but he is very energetic, kind, and approachable to any student. He loves answering questions about technique and he truly cares about the needs of his students.
I started training with Master Steyer in 2006, when I moved to Boston. I practiced Soo Bahk Do for five years before I came and was already a black (or midnight blue, as is the case in our style) belt. My experience here has been entirely different from my experience at my old studio, but it has been a very meaningful one. Master Steyer welcomes just about anyone who wants to train, and also welcomes other Soo Bahk Do /​Tang Soo Do practitioners who end up in Boston and are looking for a studio to train at. One of the benefits of our organization is that it is standardized, so SBDMDK practitioners can travel to any studio worldwide and train just as they had at another school. This is great for anyone making a big move, or like me, just living an overall unstable lifestyle until further notice. Since we are located in Boston (the biggest college town ever), BCSBD is also staffed with an eclectic batch Soo Bahk Do drifters from all over the country, many of whom also teach at the studio.
This is a great studio, full of funky and strange, but hard working, folks. And you get to wear a fancy white uniform.

I sort of stumbled across this school of Soo Bahk Do– a lesser known Korean Martial Art, not unlike Karate.
I was teaching a workshop in the same building that they were doing their workshop, and I knew I wanted to find something like this for my son, and something about the people involved made sense to me. They are young, sort of funky, and very dedicated.
So I asked, and they said they would give Oliver a try, even though he was a little young to start.
He loved it, and his younger sister got interested, so they started a pee wee class, just for my pee wees!
That is an amazing thing to me. This school is so dedicated to bringing in new practitioners that they will start a class to accommodate them.
More importantly, my kids love it. They get a remarkable workout, they have to be respectful and pay attention, and they get to wear those cute little white suits– all at the same time, twice a week
