Even if the library is closed, the grounds are still worth a visit. With landscaping designed by Frederick Law Olmsted(think Central Park), you can enjoy the cool shade of the trees around the amphitheater or stop and smell the roses — literally — while taking in a view of the harbor. I came back to see the inside of the library, since it was closed on the day I first visited. It has been beautifully renovated and has a great selection of new books for recreational reading. The rotunda on the first floor has a small vaulter ceiling with the words of Edna St Vincent Millay’s poem«Renascence» inscribed on the perimeter. For Camden dwellers and visitors alike, the library is one place to be sure to visit during your time in the area!

It’s a beautiful, sunny day in Camden. What are we doing in the library? It’s a beautiful old library, built in 1926, expanded in 1996, set on a hill over looking the harbor. Its history is here: First, we’re in the library for the rest rooms, second for the Internet and third because we’ve never been here all the times we’ve been in Camden. Alan got first dibs on the computer and while he was working, thanks to the helpful librarian, I found a copy of «The Postmistress», by Sarah Blake. I’m reading it on the ship and figured I could read while he worked. Now that he’s finished I have to remember the page number where I stopped so I can continue when we return to the ship. People came and went, picking up and returning books and DVDs. The library is a busy place. The ship has a long stay in Rockland, about 8 miles away and we plan to have lunch and wander around Camden for a while. Our taxi ride from Rockland turned into an impromptu tour, which was a lovely surprise and a great treat. We took roads that were unfamiliar to us because Rockland’s main street is being worked on. We drove through Rockport, stopped to admire the black and white Belted Galloway cows and drove into Camden via an unfamiliar route. Stores have moved and new stores have opened. We look forward to wandering the town.
