Every voice is different, every singer is different, and though our bodies are similar, the brain driving them varies wildly, and thus the way we learn is different; the mark of a great vocal coach is the ability bring brain, body, ego(yup, BIG factor) and learning ability together. There are very few exceptional teachers who can do this, but we’re lucky, as there is one such person right here in San Jose. I’ve been working with Jim Bruno on and off for the past 30+ years(!), and it’s no accident that I still feel I am improving after each session. First, voice teachers need to have a certain… thing…about them that makes you comfortable enough to make horrible sounds in front of them without feeling like you’re making horrible sounds. They also need to have the patience to continue listening to the horrible sounds as you try to make them less horrible. They also need to have a positive approach to helping you, while utilizing methods that are flexible enough to work for all of their students, while making it seem they’re just for you. Jim is all that and more; he is a genuinely enjoyable person who truly cares about helping his students sing better. It’s important to note… REALLY important… Jim Bruno wants his students to sound like themselves, not someone else. He works to help people bring their own voice out of themselves, while extending their range and making it easier to do what singers like to do best… sing. And Jim does just that. I was having BIG problems in the studio while recording my latest track, and decided that rather than fighting my producer/engineer/myself for weeks, I’d go get help. The issue wasn’t so much mechanical, it was in how I used my voice to convey emotion and feel, and within three sessions, Jim figured out what was going on had me dialed in. We scrapped the first three recording passes, re-recorded, and the finished track sounds great after one session. Hours of expensive studio time were saved, and I’m a better singer. Win. Highly, highly recommended. Truly.
