The store is clean, and it’s easy to find what you’re looking for. But, every time I have gone to this location to exchange/buy a propane tank, I’ve had to wait 10 – 15 minutes for someone to come outside and get the tank. Very slow

From reading Allison C’s review, I now understand why this Stop & Shop seems kind of old and dark: it’s been around and had a life prior to S & S. Kind of a strange layout, although I suppose they figure that mixing in an aisle of cleaning stuff, then food, then some more stuff followed by greeting cards and THEN frozen and refrigerated stuff will just keep you going through the whole store. However, it’s just«dark». Darker than the average store that also doesn’t have window… maybe it’s the lighting? Anyhow, it’s a S & S, but the great thing is that they have the self-scan aisles, although I wish they had the hand-held scanners so we could all walk around, scan, and then just breeze through the checkout with a quick scan and swipe of a credit card. Kudos to Ben, the nice boy at the deli… very nice and polite!

It’s a useful store lacking any compelling attractors. It boasts a decent salad bar which is offset by a consistently pathetic produce department. Yes, I still go to Great Barrington, which is a step up in quality, variety and presentation.

It’s a huge, ungodly supermarket that I’m sure is crushing all the small, local food sellers. That said, this place has everything!

I remember the time before the newest incarnation of the Super Stop & Shop plaza. I remember being a little girl in the late 1980s, with the tiny Finast Supermarket surrounded by towering trees and old Victorian houses siting next to two modest gas stations. It soon became Edwards Supermarket, then switched over to Stop & Shop, still a nice small-town supermarket. In the mid-2000s, in an attempt to keep the small-town locals of Canaan from driving 20 to 45 minutes away to more superior super markets in Great Barrington, MA or Torrington, a bunch of big machines came through, razed the beautiful Victorian homes, tore down all of the trees, and now the entire corner of Route 44 and Route 7 is as commercial and charmless as a charmless and commercial shopping plaza can be! I’ve almost forgotten what those Victorian houses looked like, as where they were is now a «Right Turn Only» exit onto Route 44. But I digress from my nostalgic story time. As for the supermarket itself, it’s nice to have a lot of services within a five minute drive instead of having to schlep to bigger towns and waste more gas money. This store boasts every grocery item you could need. There is a small but decent organic /natural food section, an international food aisle, a florist, a bakery, a deli, a Boston Market kiosk, a RedBox machine, and a Peoples’ Bank kiosk that is open seven days a week. Despite close to 20 cash registers, about three are manned at any given time, and three of those(thankfully) are self-serve cash registers. I think the best thing now is their association with Shell gas stations. Using your Stop & Shop discount card allows you to rack up points towards gasoline purchase savings. My mother was positivity gleeful over her recent 50 cent per gallon discount on her gasoline at the Shell next door!(And with gas prices now… I don’t blame her for being so excited!) Admittedly, I do enjoy the fact that I can buy three boxes of Kashi cereal here and bring them back to NYC with me at, compared to city prices, dirt cheap prices.(Clearly, this is the only reason I go home to visit my parents…) The town is well served by this Super Stop & Shop, though I personally miss the charm of the former small-town grocery store.
