The Royal Gorge Route Railroad

The experience was great, and the view was amazing. Unfortunately the tables are shared between two different groups of two people so it can be a tight squeeze and awkward. The food was not very good or flavorful, which was sad for $ 64 per person. It’s a good time, but could be much better with a good head chef and some wine and flavor upgrades.

A nice train ride. We picked coach ($ 44/​seat) and we were happy with the service and cleanliness. A quick tip… when getting seats, ask to be on the river side — not rock side (or at least that’s my preference). We saw some big horned sheep and other wildlife (several kayakers and rafters). You can walk through all the cars and it’s great to be in the open air car (that’s free and anyone can go there). The train announcer Jackie today was terrific — really great demeanor and super genuine and friendly.
A great trip to do once.

We love the Royal Gorge Route experience & its wonderful staff family. Literally EVERY train staff member hours out of their way to make the ride, food, educational aspects, etc even better! Thank you for all you do on the route & for Canon City!

To start off I don’t think the $ 64.00 per person for the upstairs dome area is worth it, it’s very compact and the food isn’t that good. The train runs really slow so you don’t get the train ride experience but there is a nice outdoor area you can get on. We walked through coach and it was a lot more spacious, if you want to check train ride off your bucket list just buy the coach seat and walk to the outside rail the views are a 100x better.

Great ride but I would recommend skipping the domed cars. My wife and I did this on a very hot day thinking it would be more comfortable and it wasn’t. Still stuffy and honestly I think the curved glass just distorts the view and adds nothing. Food was mediocre. We ended up going to the open cars and stayed out there because the views were spectacular and clear. The air flow out there made us comfortable. I would definitely do this again but I would only do the open air cars, least expensive option and the best view. Only downside is your standing but I would rather stand and have optimal views of the canyon than sit and have all those blind spots

Amazing day!!! Jeremy Garnett was so informative and friendly. We loved the train and all of the staff. Plus they went above and beyond to assist my 92 year old father in law.

Gourmet food with great scenery! A wonderful trip for every age group.

It was ok, views were great.
Lunch is not included, something you have to pay for, we were under the impression that it was included. Food was ok … You could get away with eating something before leaving. Train didn’t really leave until 1, so it was more of a 2 hour trip instead of 2 ½.
Beers were 5.50 a piece, to be expected at a tourist trap.
You could really see everything from the royal gorge bridge for a fraction of the cost.
We stood on the observation platform the who time and the women outside only told 2 or 3 stories.
Trip was not worth the money.
Save your money and go to the cog railway in pikes peak

I have done a number of touristy railroads as a kid, adult and now parent … This one is a solid 2 hour ride, which is longer than many. They give you a bit of a history & geology lesson along the way. The food is better than average and the drinks are fairly reasonably priced (which is surprising on a tourist train ride).
The trip is full of sights and things to see. There are different types cars that you can purchase tickets for, but all of them allow for you to out to the open air cars (definitely worth getting out to them). The price is less then going on the Bridge 1400′ above you … not sure why people are complaining about the price when the alternatives are even more expensive …
About the only thing that would make it better is having an old time steam locomotive taking you one direction or the other … seriously, of all the ‘attractions’ in Canon City /​Royal Gorge … I felt this was the best … (unless you are thrill seeker wanting to bungee the gorge) …

Fun experience.
Only bad thing was they randomly assign seating. You can not ask for the river side seats!
Food was good.

We took the dinner mystery trip. At 119.00 per person, was a bit steep even for the size of food we got. The actors were fine for what they had to work with, but the show was not that exciting. When they came to the tables, they felt rushed and they didn’t provide much information and their stores didn’t match. One didn’t even know their name, and had to look at our program. They did a bit in the middle of the train car that we couldn’t hear. I would recommend lapel microphones. My father didn’t enjoy it at all. We were there for 2 birthdays and their 50^th anniversary and they didn’t really care, made no mention at all and I told them. There was no shuttle to the cars, so my parents on canes had to hobble down the tracks to get there, with no help from even a golf cart. The food was great, but again the wait staff and actors kept running into each other. So, go for the dinner and skip the show. Loved the food, was big, and well made.

Watch out for their cancellation policy. Even if you cancel FAR in advance they will charge you $ 10 per ticket to cancel a reservation. The train ride may be great but the shady business practices give me pause.

We took the Royal Gorge Train in July while we were on vacation– we have a 3 year old and an 8 year old and this was by far the greatest thing they have experienced. Even for me and my husband we were amazed how much fun it was– my kids and I have never been on a train so this was a great experience– the outside car that you are able to go out on really made this trip that much more better. Getting the fresh air while viewing all the scenery was breathtaking. When we made reservations we did coach and added breakfast on to it and the food is AMAZING! My daughter had the giant cinnamon roll and it was delish! I myself had the big burrito and it is highly recommended! The staff on the train were very friendly and kept us entertained the whole way. I would defiantly go back again some day.

The trip was a blast!
We thought that the price was steep at first, but it was well worth it. The food was great, we had the prime rib and salmon cooked perfectly. Everything was great, but when you add the views to the food, it was outstanding. Service was great and all around perfect. Would say it is a must do!

Took a group of 13 people, ages 8 – 64, and everyone had a great time. It’s a 2.5 mile round-​trip, food and drink available while you ride. I recommend the Bacon Mary and the breakfast sandwich. Boyfriend had the quinoa pancakes and they were delicious. The open-​air cart was awesome and a great spot to take pics. Saw wildlife, waterfalls, white water rafters, and the Royal Gorge Bridge from the very bottom of the ravine. Bathrooms are available on the train. Totally recommend this if you’re in the area as it’s worth the money.

Neither my boyfriend nor I had ever been on a «real» train before. We bought tickets for the club car which were seats that faced the windows as opposed to the booth type seating in coach. There was also an option of dome seating which is in the upper part of the train with a glass dome room. If you can afford this, I would highly recommend it so you can look up without leaving your seat. They have cars with outdoor decks that you can walk out on to get a better view of the scenery. They allow you to take your beverages out on the deck with you. The deck is standing room only.
You are able to buy food and beverages on the train. We prepaid for two meals ($ 15 each) which claims to save you $ 3. DON’T DO THIS if you are planning on drinking adult beverages as they are not included. The $ 3 that you «save» is basically a free soda. Also, some of the meals on the train cost less than $ 15 each. Prepaying actually cost us more in the end.
Our server was named Venus. She was both very attentive and extremely knowledgeable. She would come over now and then and give us some history behind some of the sights that we were passing which was great.
I cannot believe I have been in Colorado for 7 years and hadn’t done this until now! I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Colorado. The views are absolutely breathtaking.

The train ride was awesome! The scenery was amazing. Food was great. Drinks were awesome. Service was spectacular. I really could go on and on about this. Well worth the money.

We put off doing the Royal Gorge Railroad trip several times because of the drive and what many said «over priced.» It is more expensive then one would like but considering the services the staff have to render its understandable, besides its spring $ 10 off now!
Its not a «WOW» experience but its an enjoyable fun time. I think doing it at least once was good for us.
The food is generally good (order 30min before you need it)
The drinks were great and we were gifted a complimentary cocktail at one point.
The staff were helpful and VERY cheerful too.
The perplexing decision for us was, which out of the 3 classes should we choose.
Once we were there we walked around and viewed the other classes to check with our decision.
True the cheapest class needs the carpeting redone and as others said, «has an odor» to it.
All this is no real concern as you can walk around and stand in the open sky train sections which made this ride even more special.
It is not too long and once it reaches its destination it basically travels the same way back so if you had to ride reverse in the first direction, you can ride the other way around in the other.
BTW we upgraded to the second class, «Club» and had a table for more comfort and great AC.

It was a sweet ride. For a family of 6 it cost us $ 140. (That was with spring discount)
We felt price was still high for the value.

What a wonderful experience. The whole family enjoyed it. I advise you go the cheapest route and then you can walk and sand outside to see the beautiful landscape.
The food was good and wasn’t too expensive.
So right now I used code 2015spring and saved $ 10 per ticket!
