Living up mauka, this place is a not only a huge convenience but a store I would choose for quality of items(over safeway and walmart). I love to support our local small businesses, and choice mart is no different. This is a great spot to get cuts(and whole) of fresh local caught fish and local big island beef. The produce is one of my favorite things about this super market. They carry a lot of local produce, and I think it rivals KTA’s produce. Sometimes even surpasses them. Choice mart also has a number of unique items such as this«everything but the bananas banana bread mix» and unique brands of sparkling cider. The banana bread mix makes some of the best banana bread I’ve ever tasted! I love choice mart, and it is one of the main pillars that holds up the south Kona community.

Everything I need, without having to go to town! The Naturals Department is huge, and a lot of the items cost less than at Island Naturals. Prices aren’t bad, considering it’s independently owned. The sushi is great, and the poke too! It’s the only place I shop, beside the odd trip to Costco for bulk items.

We’ve ordered birthday cakes from CM bakery many times and their quality has never disappointed. However this one time must’ve been an off day for them. I ordered my son’s cake 3 days in advance. We chose the theme and my son ordered Red borders rather than the Blue that came with the design. The bakery clerk was quite prompt and wrote specifically«Red Borders» on the order slip, well when we got the cake it was blue. Definitely disappointed, don’t get me wrong though, the cake was beautifully made and the blue borders looked great, what i’m disappointed in was who ever decorated it did not pay attention. So my chief complaint would be the attention to detail and instruction. I’m not saying we’re not gonna order from CM bakery again, my hope is that they read this and improve their services.

People who tend to complain about the prices probably do not live here. Visitors will be shocked, our prices are higher than the mainland. Choicemart is of course more expensive than big box Walmart or Safeway. Small businesses always are, and have to be. I’m just grateful they haven’t folded(a la Kamigaki) I know in advance to buy milk(or any of the other really high priced items) when I am in town or at Costco. Other than that, I love the produce and shopping at Choicemart, and I love the convenience of only having to drive 3 minutes from home as opposed to 30 to go all the way to town. Customer service has been mentioned in previous reviews from others. I have never had a problem, and everyone is always nice. And you are ALWAYS thanked at the register and told to have a good day.

Having gone to Choice Mart on one of the most historic days in grocery land, I am very proud to share my experiences with all. No it wasn’t the day sliced bread was invented, or the day self checkouts were installed. It was the first day that plastic bags were outlawed on the Big Island of Hawaii(17 January). From that day forward, all groceries will be carried home in reusable, cloth bags or the stores paper bags. First things first, this grocery store has an entire row of olive oil. Olive Oil! I know many people aren’t looking for nothing buy olive oil, but by showcasing that there is an entire row of it, this really shows how large this store is. The produce section was full of local and fresh fruits and vegetables. It had plenty of variety and nothing had gone bad. There was also a great pre-made section of the store that featured lots of salads and other assorted meals. On top of these great additions, the regular aisles were absolutely packed with every grocery item you could ever need. This really came in handy for a long weekend vacation rental that needed a kitchen stocking. The prices were average for Hawaii. Nothing to complain about like a lot of the other reviews I have seen for Choice Mart. The staff were also very friendly. This is the benefit of having a local, family owned grocery. If you plan on frequenting this store, the most convenient parking lot is located behind the building. The lot closest to the road requires a little walk after leaving your car. Overall, this grocery store is about as good as any store I have been to. That is saying a lot when on holiday in a place like Captain Cook, HI. Go check it out for yourself.
