I went highly recommend. I was told this place has the best pork chops on the whole island. They were really good. The place doesn’t look like a restaurant at all but it’s worth the food. It is a decent size one and it isn’t too pricey. Went during breakfast so it wasn’t too busy.

This is like my 400th visit here… and it hasn’t changed a bit! Still the absolute best PORKCHOPS in all of Hawaii! Atmosphere is casual and homey, facilities are CLEAN and service is so warm and on point! Whenever I’m in town, I will always make my way to Manago’s!

Aloha! The oldest hotel in Hawaii! Great history, great ppl working there — still the same family!!! Price is very good, ambience according to age of the owner. I would be definitely back. Ps: discounts for several airlines.

Tried the pork chop as recommended by a local and it’s really good. I like the ambiance even though it’s turning to be 100 years old this year. Family owned, family service still the best. Pork tofu, salad and bean sprouts were delicious. Wonderful people and very friendly.

‘Back in time’ Japanese American dining hall. A treasure among the fast paced blur of many un-notable spots. This spot does not try to be trendy or fashionable. You just have to love it for what it is. A true family style local eatery with fresh fish and fried steak, saimen bowl and sides of mac salad, rice, plain dinner salad or soup.

Manago’s is a no frills family style restaurant. It’s been a go-to for dinners all my life. The pork chops are my favorite but I’ll order opelu if i feel like mixing it up. I love the food, the environment(even when it’s super busy!) and the staff couldn’t be kinder!

Our family was in HIlo for the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and my sister made us drive 2 hours to Kona to eat pork chops here. She lived in Kona for 10 years and this is one of her favorite places. It has become a yearly tradition to eat here and I was told that I couldn’t order anything but the pork chops. I was very glad. They are the best ones I’ve ever eaten! They start you with family size mac salad and bean sprouts in a delicious teri sauce and rice. When the pork chops came out I was just blown away at how delicious they were. I will most definately be back when I visit the big island and spend my days trying to recreate these at home. Fast service. Great food. Wonderful view from the windows.

In Kona on the way to Hilo for Merrie Monarch, found this place on Unilocal & had to try. Well worth the 30 minute drive south of Kona. Was not disappointed. This place is as advertised– felt like I was dining in the 50’s in the original old wood building(actually I think the building was built in 1917). The menu is on the wall. We had the garlic butter Ono for lunch. They had pre-meal side dishes like Korean banchan– cabbage with pork, mac potato salad & sweet lima beans(the best I’ve ever had– could eat like boiled peanuts all day long!). The Ono was cooked to perfection & excellent. This is one I’ll be back when I’m in Kona. They have other great dishes I gotta try & the prices are cheap for what you get. Service was excellent too!

I came right before closing, and they pointed to the menu printed on the wall… it was all meat and fish so I asked what they had that wasn’t meat or fish, and she suggested a salad. It was rainy out and I hadn’t eaten much all day, I wanted something warm, so just a plain cold salad was a disappointment, but I was tired and staying in the motel, and didnt feel like going anywhere else. Salad was ok, fresh romaine, pale tomato slices, shredded carrots and 3 cucumber slices, boring. I love the overall décor though, like the land that time forgot. Formica and chrome mid-century tables, older wood tables, one old wood table with a forum CA and chrome top. Old wide window blinds, almost-chicken-wire screens on the windows. Non-intentional hip. Prompt service. I wouldn’t recommend dinner here for vegetarians unless you were desperate.

Love this old school restaurant. If you want the full effect, ask to use the restroom and you will need to wind yourself around the corner of the hotel and you will step back in time. The food is awesome!

Get your okole to Manago hotel for pork chops gravy and onions! Sides of fresh ogo and potatoe salad, so good so local(mixed veggies ok). Great value. Can’t think of a better place to go on this side of the island. Hope they stay open forever, or as long as I am on this earth… Go get some chips to go next door.

I literally came here every single week for the past month. It’s that good! Manago’s is a no frills family style restaurant. They dish out huuuuge portions with a big bowl of rice and plates of sides to share among the table. And most of their dishes are $ 12 including the sides! Such a sweet deal! Tons of locals eat here and it gets pretty busy even on week nights, but I’ve never had to wait more than 10minutes for a table. People eat quick and leave! Everything here is pretty amazing, but they’re most famous for their pork chops! Remember to ask for the gravy and onions on the side! I’m not a huge fan of the gravy(a bit too salty for me) but a few of my friends swear by it! And the pork chops taste amazing with the grilled onions. I usually get one and a half pieces with my order but once they asked me if I wanted the 10oz or 16oz. Trust me, the 10oz is plenty! Anyways I’m not sure what they marinade the chops with but it is soooo good. And the pork is always crazy tender! The Opakapaka is another yummy favorite. I got my fished cooked with garlic and butter. It was so delicious! Tastes really fresh and perfectly cooked. The Opelu is ok in my opinion. I was sold on ordering this fish because they told me it was freshly caught and local. It doesn’t taste bad but there’s nothing special about it either. They grill the crap out of it and gave me 3 huge pieces! So I got kinda tired of it. It’s a good dish to split with others so you don’t have to eat sooo much, but the Opakapaka is better. Sides! They are delicious! And they change all the time. The Mac salad is always solid. I always love their bean sprouts too. They’ve had jap chae too which is a nice surprise. The tofu and meat is a friend’s favorite. Sometimes the sides can be disappointing though like sweet beans or corn. Still, it’s nice that they give you so many sides when the entrees are so cheap. Overall, definitely a must if you’re in Captain Cook! Manago’s is one of my favorite places to eat at on the island.

My good friend Ronnie & I were on a trek around the island this past Monday/Tuesday and had this place recommended to us. The hotel was about what you’d expect for the price… nothing fancy, a little run down and old. The restaurant was cute, really old school and just simple. We had the«world famous» pork chops & eggs for breakfast. The chops were really good, not the best I’ve ever had, but really good. Overall a great stop & a cute little town, I will return!

Stopped by here from a trip to Volcano and HIlo since it was along the way back to Kona. Parked across the street where there is also a farmer’s market going on since it was a weekend. As soon as I went inside it made me feel like I was stepping back in time, the dining area was busy but I was seated right away and orders were taken as well. Pork chops were thick and juicy served with 3 sides. I was so hungry that I gobbled it all under 15 minutes, lol!

Like what most people say, just get their famous pork chops! I ate my entire plate and the small dishes! The restaurant is inside the hotel, and there’s so much history at the hotel. I would love to say here next time! Someone recommended this restaurant to us and we drove almost 1.5 hours to get here. Service: Everyone was very nice and made us feel at home. Food: We ordered 3 Pork chop(Gravy & onions are optional) and one Shrimp platter. Everything was simple yet savory and we couldn’t stop eating! The price for all the dishes were all affordable and worth every penny! Wait time: We mad reservations the day before for 4 people and were seated right away. Parking: street parking Time visited: Dinner time — Sunday– Non-holiday

A simplistic yet classic menu consisting of items like pork chops, fish and beef burgers, N.Y. Steaks, fish & shrimp platters, and breakfast keep this hotel restaurant packed all through the year. I usually go for the pork chops and never say no to it being smothered in onions and delicious gravy(optional). You receive a couple of sided with your meal, which change from time to time. Normally they’re Mac salad, two scoops of white rice, seaweed salad, and pickled radish. It’s very filling and very good. The atmosphere is relaxed and very family friendly. Because they’re usually packed during peak hours, we call in and take our food Togo instead of waiting for a table, though dining in is nice too. Manago has been around forever and is always a great stop for the family.

The secret is out and everyone knows about Manago’s. Reservations are a must, so call ahead or be prepared to wait. I’m still love the charm of this old historic hotel. The food tastes like«home,» and I could probably eat here everyday if my husband would let me. I love the simplicity of this place. There are no menus, just a small board hanging in the center of the dining room. Every meal is served with steamed rice and three side dishes that change almost daily. Just like the other Unilocalers mentioned, if this is your first visit, order the pork chops as they never disappoint.

Day trip to Kona for work, local resident told us we had to try the pork chops at Manago. Food: Great, tasty comfort food Of course we had to try the Pork Chops and Butterfish. Pork chops were seared perfectly, crisp on the exterior, juicy on the inside. The butterfish was good, the miso sauce was just a tad sweeter than I’m used to but still good. Service: Staff was wonderful, quick, friendly, gave good recommendations. Atmosphere: Like walking back into my childhood. Walking through the hotel, the restaurant itself, even the restrooms took me back to my early memories of pre-1970’s type establishments. Really cool! Value: Definitely worth every penny. Food was cheap but portions were generous and very tasty.

Is it the most exclusive restaurant on the planet? Or would it be considered the hip spot to check out in Kona? Answer: No. However, it is definitely a not-so-hidden secret whose reputation for a stellar pork chop is well warranted. The food is simple and humble, but done well and makes you come back for more. The Manago Hotel’s simple structure tucks its dining room off the lobby and down a hall with a simple open/closed sign on its door. As you enter, you realize you are definitely in the country and think that you are in your auntie’s kitchen. Sit down at one of the melamine tables and look up to find the menu hanging from the north wall. The pork chop is what you come there for. It’s simple pan fried and still moist to the center and topped with brown gravy. Simple right, but when you take that first bite, you realize that it is so much more. Well cooked, tender meat, and full of flavor. Served up with rice and three side dishes, priced at less than $ 15, and flavorful… how could you go wrong? There are other options like the fish or sandwiches, if you want something a tad different. Prices are very reasonable, but be sure to have cash since they don’t take card. Cool and hip, it is not. Awesome and flavorful it is.

Stopped by on our way back from the Papakolea green sand beach. There was a cute little waiting room right next door to the restaurant. The restaurant was in the hotel and it was like taking a walk back through time. Service was pretty good and the waitress was very sweet. She quickly brought out the appetizers after putting in our order. There was rice, steamed veggies, potato salad, and black beans. The people next to us got green beans though… so not sure if you’re supposed to request one or the other. It wasn’t super seasoned, but I mean for the price who can really complain. For me the pork chops were a little too smothered in oil, the plate was filled with it and it was just really heavy for my liking. We also ordered the fried mahi mahi and it was pretty fresh! The only thing is I felt like I’ve definitely had better fish at another restaurant the night better. Nevertheless the homey feel and good service is worth a stop on the road if it’s on the way!
