I have both eaten at the restaurant and ordered takeout from China One in Carlisle. After living on the west coast and having tons of great choices for Chinese, I’ve been searching for a go to Chinese restaurant in the area. My first visit was disappointing as I didn’t really enjoy the food I ordered. Being that the location is close to where I was living, I decided to give them a second… and third try… and ok I go there often now. After trying several dishes I found that their sesame chicken is my favorite. I’ve also found a few other dishes that I really like. China One makes good Chinese food. It doesn’t measure up to the Chinese that I’ve eaten in the San Francisco Bay Area, however it it is good and consistent.

Really not much good to say about this place. The food was just OK. Staying down the street at the Residence Inn, my wife and I decided to get some takeout. We got an order of steamed dumplings and two dinner combination plates. The dumplings would have been OK if they had actually been cooked. The wrappers were basically raw dough. My wife’s combo, the shrimp and crabmeat with garlic sauce, was tasty, with a spicy sauce that had just the right level of heat. The«crabmeat» was really the pink imitation crab made from some kind of fish. My combo, with General Tso’s chicken, was average, but the«pork fried rice» was yellow(???), had zero pork in it, and little else. Both meals came with egg rolls that were small and half-filled with shredded cabbage and no meat. Overall, there has to be other places in the area that you can find better food than this.

After too many hours from too many accidents on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, it was essential to get off the highway for a stretch and victuals. Carlisle is the halfway point between Westmoreland County and Bucks, meaning we had another 2 hours to make it home Sunday night, if we were lucky. Thanksgiving can be a steelbelted bear. Rather than hit the fast foodie joints on North 11, we drove south toward the real historic Carlisle. Lo and behold, within a half mile on the left was a fairly new strip center with a well lit, «China One,» sign right in the middle. Always a willing consumer of Chinois Americain, the storefront beckoned like a comfortable bed after an exhausting travail. This shop was brightly lit, which clearly show how clean it was. It was empty but for us, so we approached the counter to check out the paper menu. We were promptly greeted by the lovely proprietress, who spoke with a clear Fujianese accent despite more than 20 years living in the U.S. of A. I ordered the Combo Sesame Chicken Platter(Chicken, Pork Fried Rice and Egg Roll) @ about $ 8, and a bottle of water. They did not have hot tea. While we waited, the water closet was visited. Even it was uberclean. I could imagine how pleased my companion was in the small room next door. We returned to our table to wait delivery of the meal. They arrived on real ceramic plates and with real steel flatware! Damn! I was more accustomed to being forced to eat out of Styrofoam and with cheap plastic utensils, even when eating in-house. This was a tremendous upgrade. Much appreciated. The Sesame Chicken was plentiful and did not offer the tough texture of a bird too long left in the frozen tundra of a walk in freezer. It was good, but to pic a nit, the sauce tasted of being designed for General Tso, rather than what I desired, it being a reddish amber color with more Chili flavor than expected. Maybe they thought it wouldn’t be noticed under the full sprinkle of Sesame Seeds. The Fried Rice had plenty of chunky Pork and Veggies, although made en masse earlier in the day. The Eggroll was big, hot and tasted fine with a little package of Duck Sauce squeezed over the top. China One is on the high side of Chinese/American houses with its cleanliness, friendliness, and ample portions. No, it isn’t authentic Chinese cuisine, but who would expect that outside of a Chinese community? I would not hesitate to return if I found myself in the vicinity and hankering for something with Broccoli Sprigs on the side.

This place is awesome. We live close so we decided to give it a try. We ordered general tso’s chicken, chicken and broccoli, and vegetable lo mein. Everything was fresh and had a great taste. The generals chicken was a lot of chicken instead of a ton of breading. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be going back!

I ordered takeout from here today, 9÷28÷15, and very much enjoyed my food! I ordered the seafood delight, chicken chow mein, and Chinese donuts. The pieces of seafood were big and cooked well. The veggies in both dishes were cooked fantastically; they were cooked, but still had a crunch to them. The donuts were to die for! I love Chinese donuts and these ones were great! Soft, warm, and sweet. Yum! Everything tasted fresh. I’ll definitely try this place again when I want some takeout!
