I eat here for lunch often and love the sushi selection. They have blue fin tuna belly that is so delicious it melts in your mouth! I usually order the Hawaiian and it never fails. The soy mustard they put on top of the roll is the perfect compliment to the fish. The price isn’t to shabby either! Ambiance is coastal industrial and I think they did a very good job updating the décor.

Good deals especially during lunch and happy hour. The pipeline and samurai are fairly priced for what you get. The curry bowl is super cheap for amount of food and quality you get. Again the food is good for the price. Service is not bad either.

Food is decent. Service is pretty crappy. Our waitress left dirty dishes on our table and wouldn’t pick them up. Then she forgot something we ordered. Water ran low and she never refilled it. Nuts

This is really a 3.5 star review. The sushi tasted great for the lunch specials price of 30% off for the specialty rolls. We got the edamame which was thankfully humongous and well worth the cost. However, for our 3 rolls, which we ordered at the same time as the edamame, it took another 30 – 45 minutes to come out. While it was a Sunday afternoon at 1:45 pm, they were at least 25% below their capacity and it really should not have taken so long. 2 other tables near us were having the same issue as well. But, when the food finally arrived it was delicious and designed beautifully. The customer service(disregarding the slow roll making) and the food would lend me to go back again. I would just ensure that it is on an afternoon when I don’t have much else to do.

I never went before the ownership change but the new ownership did a great job. The place has good happy hour, fresh tasting sushi(not an expert but have had my fair share of good and bad sushi), really clean bar and sushi station and it was really well staffed. You won’t have to flag down a server here. I’ll be back soon.

My husband and I went to Mikko for the first time on a Saturday night and were seated right away at a cozy little table for two in the back of the restaurant. I ordered the Mikko roll, my husband got the Dynamite and Pipeline rolls, which were all delicious. We both noticed that the fish looked and tasted very fresh. We had a great time and look forward to coming back to Mikko! Our next stop will be for Happy Hour!

Mikko is such a wonderful sushi restaurant! I’ve been coming in often and every visit has always been a pleasure to me. All the staff are kind and welcoming, ESPECIALLY the owner! She is very sweet and caring. She gave my mom and I great services too. The owner definitely knows how to run the business in a good condition. The servers and sushi men are just as kind as well. I love the Mikko Family! Not only do their services keep me happy, but also their food too! Their sushi quality is always fresh. I love sushi and know what’s good or not. Their’s is GREAT. I ordered a bunch of salmon, jumbo scallop, ikura, halibut, and uni nigiris along with salmon sashimi. Every single piece melted in my mouth. The wonderful sushi men who made our food also gave us thick slices of fish in all our orders as well as a few services on the side. Their garlic edamames are really yummy! I love that their beans are plumpy unlike some other places. Their oysters are fresh and delicious also. The vibe of the whole restaurant gave me a nice, cozy atmosphere. Nothing too crazy. I love that they use cute mason jars for drinks and their soy sauce is contained in a unique container. I like the idea how they are different from your average sushi restaurant. I live 5 minutes away from here and always come whenever I have my sushi cravings. I am hooked on Mikko Sushi. Definitely worth it!

Ate here for lunch. I ordered the Tuna Poke Bowl, miso soup, and some Blue Fin fatty tuna sushi(Toro). Everything was pretty good… except the Tuna Poke bowl wasn’t fully up to par. I could only taste the liquid smoke… barely any soy sauce or garlic. It seemed like it was in between regular sashimi and poke. Our service was fast and friendly. Would I come here again? I plan to! But I won’t be ordering the poke. Thanks for lunch guys.

Hopefully on my next return I will give this place a higher rating. The décor was great! Loved the interior design and the mason jars for drinks. Great choice on the ikea chairs! Can never go wrong there. Modern with a flair of Carlsbad! We went in for happy hour at 5:45 got sat right away and the hostess got our drinks. About 10 minutes later a family was sat right next to us. The waitress immediately went over to them and began taking their order and answering questions. She finally made it over to us at 6:00. When our food came out she dropped it off right away and we didn’t have a moment to ask her for Siracha and eel sauce. She never came back willingly to ask how our meal was. We had to flag her down to get what we needed. The food was excellent. I ordered the beef teriyaki entrée which came with white rice, miso soup and a salad. It was tasty however I wasn’t into the salad dressing. The entrée was a little cold and would of tasted much better had it been hot. My hubby ordered the Cali roll and the specialty roll«Surfs up» he absolutely loved it. Had the service been better this would of been a 5 star review. Side note, it was cold in there! Bring a coat. Updated! This place earned 5 stars! On my initial visit the service wasn’t great. This time around it couldn’t have been better. The owner really takes customers comments and addresses the issues. It was super packed and busy, the food came out perfect and hot. The server was attentive and the owner came by and checked on our table several times. I can’t wait to try their lunch bento box specials!

My boyfriend and I were planning to go to that ocean blue sushi joint but they were too loud and packed. So we walked down the street to this cute darling place. We are so happy we did! It was more of a casual date night sort of place. The staff is extremely friendly and professional. The sushi is also very filling and the pieces are huge! But if you’re thinking of getting the green tea tempura ice cream, be aware that it is a giant portion! I was very satisfied leaving:)

By far the most disorganized restaurant I’ve ever been to. Literally, I was brought another tables order 5 different times. In fact, 4 of those 5 times, I was brought someone else’s food before I even ordered. Some other meh-moments: 1) blasted Xmas music. Yes I get it it’s almost Christmas. But it’s also a sushi restaurant. I don’t need to hear the Nutcracker or Jingle Bells on Volume Level 11 while I’m trying to figure out which roll doesn’t have imitation crab in it. 2) the shui Mai which is traditionally a Chinese appetizer, was fried and not steamed. People, if you’re going to infuse other cultures in your restaurant, at least do it right. 3) the spicy scallop roll had two ingredients: scallop and an overwhelming amount of Sriracha. 4) the mixed tempura udon had no shrimp as part of he mix. It was shrimp-less. C’mon son!!! The quality of the fish was ehh. Not bad, not great. The staff was nice but holy balls they didn’t know the difference between halibut vs squid and then didn’t know the difference between tamago/roe and uni. People, you gots to learn your fishes/shellfishes/crustaceans!

It is very, very hard to find decent sushi in this region of California. That is why I am excited to have found this neat little restaurant in Carlsbad. Not only is Mikko’s sushi fresh and delicious, it is well-priced. My favorite dish so far is the Tonkatu ramen. The broth alone is so flavorful it’s like a bowl of heaven. Buttery, garlic, pork belly heaven. What’s not to love? I also tried the Mikko, swami, and tiger rolls. All three were very tasty and the salmon was fresh. I like the overall atmosphere of the restaurant, it was very relaxing and a nice spot to hang out and watch the games. I will definitely be coming back often!

I’m not a big of sushi but this place can change that attitude anytime. The food is great and prices are decent for sushi rolls, meat and rice combo plates and appetizers. Plenty of parking behind and in front of the restaurant hive is awesome for when it’s busy. Our server told us that the busy days/hours are on Fridays and Saturday nights. We went in around 7 for dinner and the place was lightly packed so getting a table wasn’t a problem. The interior of the place is pretty awesome; sushi bar where you can sit and watch chefs go to work, plenty of booths and some tables for big group party’s. The place reminds me of a modern day diner with its décor. This place has great service and the food doesn’t disappoint, try it out some time for a sushi night.

First time visit since the restaurant changed owners. I was shocked when I first walked in. They gave the old mikko a fresh face lift, completely removing the old tables and sushi bar with nice new furnishings. There were definitely a few familiar faces, which was nice to see they didn’t clean house and start completely fresh. The menu was also spruced up and no more 50% off 5 roles or more, which was a bummer to see gone. The food was great. Fresh sushi and nice presentation. I will definitely be coming back!

Average sushi place in Carlsbad. This is the first sushi place I tried and it is not quite as good as some other places I have been to. The fish was fine, not noticeably fresh or anything. They have a large menu and a big selection of rolls to choose from, all of which are pretty complicated with a lot of sauces. This is your typical American sushi place where the focus isn’t necessarily going to be on the fish but rather the sauces and flavors that they add. Service was not very attentive and they got a few of our orders wrong.

After studying at the library, Tim and I got hungry. When I asked him what he was feeling, we decided on sushi, so we ended up here since it was on the way back to my apartment. We walked in around 5 pm on a Sunday. Parking lot was pretty empty. We got a choice of where to sit and we chose the booth. Looking at the menu, we realized we made it for Happy Hour! Score! We didn’t order any alcohol, but it looked like a pretty good beer list for happy hour. We ordered: — Tiger Roll — Swami’s Roll — mixed tempura — bill came out to around $ 21 not including tip Friendly customer service! The sushi chef noticed we were ready but no one came by to take our order so he took our sushi order and got us going. Food came out really fast! Great happy hour deals, 30% off specialty rolls. I had been here before they changed owners, and it’s a big improvement! When we got the bill, the server forgot to give us happy hour prices so we sent the bill back to get it fixed. Overall we had a good experience here!

My girlfriend and I came here for dinner a few weeks ago after work. We both work nearby so this place looked appealing(other than that it’s next to the gas station and kind of out in the open). The customer service is what stands out for me because we were so indecisive, yet our waitress was very patient and suggested things for us. The rolls that really stand out for me was the Carlsbad roll and the salmon skin roll. The salmon skin roll brought back my childhood of eating crispy fish skin along with the white fillet itself with soy sauce and white rice. It was wonderful. I also loved my tuna sashimi, per usual. The place itself is really nice inside, you wouldn’t think so from the outside, but it has a nice, sleek feel to it inside. The price is a little pricey compared to some of the other sushi places I’ve been to but that’s ok, we’re paying for freshness here.

really glad the Unilocal minions made the new-and-improved, recently remodeled, under new ownership, pretty much completely reinvented MIKKO a «new» restaurant and unburdened them from the well earned and much deserved stigma of the«old» MIKKO. that place sucked. this place gets five stars. still AMERICANSUSHI but very, very well done. plenty of parking. got greeted at the door. service was attentive. food came out quickly. everything looked gorgeous. fish was fresh. prices were reasonable. in easy walking distance of my office. everything i could hope for in a SUSHI place. went with three of my kids. i started with a HONEYMOON, an oyster, quail egg and uni concoction served in a martini glass. slurped it down in one gulp. great starter. WYATT, my nine-year old, began, as he nearly always does, with the(YELLOWFIN) TUNASASHIMI. check out the photo. how’s that for a deep, red color? can you tell how fresh it was? asked the SUSHICHEFS to cut each slice in half(and they obliged) to accommodate the boy’s smaller bites. he pronounced it the best ever. the(growing) boy also had a SOFTSHELLCRAB roll, pretty standard sushi bar fare and the WYATT wolfed it down. the CRISPYJALAPENO(stuffed jalapenos or jalapeño poppers else where) was extremely well executed. always one of my guilty pleasures, theirs is the most amazing i have ever experienced. really was done perfectly. JULIANA, my eleven-year old, had the TEMPURAUDON. for a nominal fee($ 1 for six slices) she got extra fishcakes. the girl loves those edged in neon-pink, rubbery bites to slurp with her fat noodles. appreciate that the TEMPURA is served on the side so it doesn’t arrive at the table already soggy. the table rolls, DRAGON, PIPELINE and SWAMI that MICHAEL, one of my three adult sons, ordered were all very good too. tightly packed so they held together, not overly drenched in cloying sweet sauces or littered with crispy, fried bits and visually interesting. would have liked more bonita flakes sprinkled on the DRAGON(love to watch them dance) but really enjoyed all three rolls. they had AMAEBI(live sweet shrimp), BLUEFIN and TUNABELLY but we’d already ordered too much and couldn’t sneak in one more bite. gives us an excuse(like we needed one) to go back soon — very, very soon. very excited to have a sushi place we all enjoyed so close. looking forward to being regulars.
